Me and Snoopy (photo: Denise Truscello)
Some news items you might have missed: • Snoop Watch:  Just a quick check-in to say Snoopy (the short one above) is doing great settling in with Michael and me. For those interested in #BeagleLife, most of my posts about Snoopy will be on Instagram here. Thanks to Denise Truscello for the pic and to everyone for all the messages of support about our new 14-year-old addition 🙂 • Instinct Magazine: The Lifetime TV channel has announced that it will release its first-ever holiday film with a same-sex romance as the central storyline. The upcoming tv movie is titled The Christmas Set-Up and follows two former high school friends who get (surprise!) ‘set-up’ by one’s mother during holidays at home. • Out Music: Acclaimed singer and songwriter VINCINT recently released “Hard 2 Forget,” the eagerly awaited follow-up to his acclaimed debut EP, The Feeling. The out artist has received raves from the media like this from Eonline: “VINCINT has kept us captivated with his sumptuous synth-pop sound and his outrageous vocals. As masterful with a full-throated belt as he is slipping into a soft falsetto, his is a voice.”

WOW: Former Grey’s Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington (who was fired from the show for using a homophobic slur) came out to FoxNews as a Trump supporter. In April, the actor tweeted he had left the Democratic party. • Sunday Times: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on why the now-infamous CATS movie turned out the way it did – “The problem with the film was that [director] Tom Hooper decided that he didn’t want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show. The whole thing was ridiculous.” • CNN: After repeatedly seeking to discredit mail-in voting, Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed Florida’s election system is “safe and secure” and encouraged Floridians to vote by mail.

Gamer & The Goss: Tom Goss Is Down For The ‘Nerdy Bear’

It’s always nice to start the day with a smile 🙂 So, I was happy to see an email this morning from award-winning, guitar-toting, singer/songwriter Tom Goss announcing, “Nerdy Bears are the cutest bears! Naturally, I wrote a song and made a video about it.” While Tom has spent much of the past year promoting his latest album titled, Territories, a moody, richly-layered synth-pop collection exploring the complexities of love. But now, he’s back in fun mode with this homage to those plus-size gamer guys.

“Given the hot mess that is 2020 I thought the world could use something light and full of fun, ” says Tom. “And what’s more fun than a ‘Nerdy Bear?'”

Nerdy bear, behind them glasses you’re a dirty bear. So shake that a** in daddy underwear, and let me sneak into your secret lair.

Tom’s handsome co-star, Jason Villegas (Chubby Tanuki on Instagram), is totally ‘game’ for the role.

You can find my previous coverage of terrific Tom on The Randy Report here. Back in 2013, over 200 bears joined together to make Tom’s super-fun video romp, “Bears.” Complete with lots of robust, hirsute men playing with Super Soakers, careening down a slip and slide, and dancing in a club (usually in slow motion), the video celebrates all the furry goodness.

New Music: Kitty Coen Has A ‘Dark Soul’ (And It’s A Good Thing)

Kitty Coen in ‘Dark Soul’ (image via Instagram)
Any press release that begins with “Psychedelic disco cowgirl realness” is definitely going to get my attention. That’s how Texas-based artist Kitty Coen describes her new song and music video, “Dark Soul.” “I wanted to take the viewer on a psychedelic trip through the mind of Kitty Coen,” says the indie singer/songwriter. “‘Dark Soul’ is a song about being in love or infatuated with something at first glance because of its beauty but then realizing that nothing is as it seems.” Coen says the tune was originally written on acoustic guitar in a friend’s garage. But as she performed it live, she realized the song was, and needed to be, “bigger.” So, she went to Nashville to work on it with her producer and “re-worked it into a western disco dance track.” Acknowledging her musical upbringing on a lot of country music, Coen is clear: “This isn’t country, it’s more like Dolly Parton on an acid trip.” Check out the groovy alt-rock/electropop bop set in Coen’s glam neon world below. You can follow Miss Kitty on Instagram here.

Out Music: Wrabel “Since I Was Young” (With Kesha)

Out singer-songwriter Wrabel shares this new collaboration with Kesha, “since i was young.” “Kesha is like a sister to me,” the artist shared in a statement. “She’s changed my life and changed the way I want to create and showed me what it means to be an artist and what it means to celebrate life, for all of its ups and downs and all-arounds.” “This song was basically just a conversation on that,” he added. “It’s rare to get to work with someone that’s seen you as so many things and in so many phases. From drunk and sad, to sober and still sad, to sober and in-love and happy.”

I’m a big fan of Wrabel’s work. You can find my previous coverage of his music here.

Out Music: VINCINT, Tommy Boi, Kim Petras & Kygo, Neon Trees

VINCINT (photo: Matthew Takes)
New music from top-notch out artists for your weekend… First up, acclaimed singer-songwriter VINCINT has teamed up with the cast of Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series, Queer Eye, to unveil the music video for Be Me.” Directed by Jake Wilson (Cher, Lizzo, Jonas Brothers), the video was filmed by VINCINT and the Fab Five using their iPhone cameras during quarantine. The track is pure musical joy. “It’s a celebration of the self!” says VINCINT. “A moment to believe that you can be more than what you thought you ever could. This video is a burst of light in a time where light is so needed.” “Be Me” premiered in the official trailer for Season 5 of Queer Eye – which is set in VINCINT’s hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I covered VINCINT’s earlier release, “Save Myself,” here.

California-based Tommy Boi serves up a bit of hopefulness with this heart-on-sleeve pop ballad, blessing in disguise.” “I grew up as a pastor’s kid so coming out was always like this scary thing that I knew I was going to have to do eventually,” says the young out artist. “I was also made fun of in high school because I was new and kids assumed, I was gay before I was ready to come out. “It was really painful and hard to know people were making up rumors and talking about me,” he adds. “Anyways, I think this song was just a culmination. It’s me singing to myself while I’m going through it, hoping that everything turns out to be okay in the end.” I hear Tommy is currently working on a music video for the track, but to be honest – I like being able to experience Tommy’s open, plaintive vocals set atop the haunting, melancholy piano soundscape without a visual to distract me. Look for his new four-song EP due out late July.

Kim Petras in “Broken Glass” (screen capture)
Pop sensation Kim Petras has teamed up once again with producer and DJ Kygo to release the music video for their pop-tastic collaboration, “Broken Glass.” The video for the song, which appears on Kygo’s third studio album, Golden Hour, depicts Petras as the queen of a dystopian-inspired, post-apocalyptic nightscape. Kygo is certainly the artist of the moment. Last week, the producer/DJ held 16 spots on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart beating out Lady Gaga’s 13.

Neon Trees drops their new single, “Mess Me Up,” in advance of their upcoming album, I Can Feel You Forgetting Me due out July 24. “’Mess Me Up’ is the gut-punch of our new album,” says NeonTrees‘ lead singer, Tyler Glenn on the single. “It’s a plea to not let the pain of a break-up linger, set to the tune of a slow dance.” “What I love tonally is it sounds like that one last dance on prom night before we end it all,” adds the out frontman. “If you’re gonna mess me up, get me addicted, ruin a few good years of my life–Act like you know me and don’t do it slow.”

Out Music: Nadia Vaeh ‘RiSE’

Nadia Vaeh (photo: Kate Romero)
Out singer/songwriter Nadia Vaeh brings an upbeat and inspirational message to audiences via her new track, “RiSE“. The Atlanta native began singing at the age of two and by middle school was performing in a traveling youth choir. Her artistic journey continued as she began booking modeling gigs and joined a local Atlanta circus. It was amid those divergent but creative outlets that music took on a more central role in her life. Her mother was a poet who passed on her love of words fueling Nadia’s talent as a lyricist. But the young artist’s life took an unexpected turn at the age of 17 when she lost her mother to suicide. Experiencing a turbulent chapter in her life, she dismantled her high-school band and stepped away from music for a time. What followed was a period of self-sabotage and unhealthy relationships until she reached back into her musical artistry for healing. “I made a lot of missteps when I first began my career and had to learn a lot of things the hard way.” Inspired by sounds from all over the world, the alt-pop artist has been heavily influenced by her time spent in the Netherland Antilles island, Curaçao. She also draws from the roots of her father’s homeland of Lebanon and has an affinity for middle eastern music. The new single “RiSE,” featuring Hazel Rose, is a mid-tempo musical cocktail blending hip-hop with a touch of reggae. Vaeh’s vocals dance across the heavy beat as she drops her message of positivity – “Life’s a ride, not a raceway.” I recently chatted with the artist about the new release as well as where she finds inspiration and what helps her recharge.

The Randy Report: Congratulations on “RiSE” – what inspired you to write and record the song? Nadia Vaeh: Thank you! The homies and I were all reflecting on what a fast-paced world in which we live and the many barriers that divide us from true human connection. I think we must have all felt the weight of shifts yet to come that night or something. I know we talked a lot about the flaws within society, as we were writing. The line “life’s a ride, not a raceway” kept coming up and that line has taken on more meaning than I think we all even knew on the eve we wrote “RiSE.” TRR: Do you have a process when it comes to songwriting? Lyrics or music first? NV: It varies from song to song! Sometimes a whole song is born from two lines I’ve written in my notepad, other times, I just can’t get a melody out of my head. I am definitely a more word driven writer though and I would say 9/10 songs the words or concept come first and attach themselves to a melody. Sometimes I don’t even feel like I’m in charge when I am in the flow-state space of a writing session. It becomes bigger than what I thought I wanted to write about. TRR: You grew up in Atlanta, a major music city in the U.S. Now, Los Angeles has its groove, NYC has its vibe, Nashville has its thang. Does Atlanta have a certain flavor? If so, what did you take away from your time there? NV: Yesss! Atlanta has a fun vibe. It is a very artsy and diverse city with a charming grit. It’s Hotlanta for sure!! It’s humid and hot in the summers but the city stays so alive even on the hottest of days there are always cool events happening all over the city. I am proud of my hometown! TRR: I have to ask – you joined your local circus when you were younger? What did you do in the circus? NV: This is going to be a long answer… So I woke up one day and knew I just was not happy, I was not me. In that same day, I quit my job, I quit school and I quit my boyfriend. My spirit was to a point where a change was needed. My life as it was, was not lending to me being able to really pursue my dreams of being an artist. I was in my last day at the nice loft I shared with my boyfriend at the time, doing a final load of laundry (I was seriously downgrading my digs and moving into a very cheap crapshoot apartment) when I realized as fate would have it, I was out of detergent. So I went down to the only neighbor I had had small exchanges within my time living there and went to ask to “borrow” a cuppa soap. He was a quirky fellow, always dressed very steam-punk/circus-y…our small exchanges usually consisted of “hello, how are you” and incorporated funny accents. I peeked behind him as he agreed to help out with my soap saga and saw all these trapezes, mats, and open space. I asked him what that was all about and he explained he ran a local circus to which I confided I had always wanted to join the circus ever since I saw my first circus show at 11 years old. He asked me “well, why haven’t you?!” while gesturing with his arm into his space and I agreed to come to practice with them for hand to hand acro. It was in that moment I was forever changed. I worked with him on getting stronger and more flexible (at this time, I don’t think I had ever even done a push up) and I had my first performance experience with them for a series of Valentine’s day shows. I was also asked to sing for these and this event REALLY changed my life. In rehearsals, I met my first songwriting partner with whom I learned so many fundamentals. We wrote a lot of folk stuff. I might pull a GAGA and release a different vibe project pulling from those pieces and those days. I <3 the circus and all it taught me. Forever changed from all the circus performers I got to meet because of that experience too.

Nadia Vaeh (photo: Kate Romero)
TRR: Best advice you’ve ever been given? NV: It’s so cliché, but stop letting what people think get to you. It’s so damn true!!! The moment we go to that headspace of fear of judgment is the moment we stop being ourselves. Also, another one ya hear all the time…don’t give up!! There have been so many instances where things have been so difficult and for seconds I’ve considered throwing in the towel. When I think back to those moments of weakness or fear, I also see so many incredible moments or friendships I would have missed out on as well as getting to know myself again. TRR: When you’re not making music, what do you do to recharge your creative self? NV: I love to dance and move my body. If I am in a creative rut, I know it’s because I am not present enough with my vessel. Getting outside helps too, whether it’s just going on s walk around the block or a full nature excursion. Mother nature is our best healer.

A portion of the proceeds from “RiSE” (now available at all digital download sites) will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign. For more info on Nadia Vaeh’s artistry head over to NadiaVaeh.com.

Yanni Burton (courtesy photo)
Some news items you might have missed: • Newsweek: Producers for The Ellen DeGeneres Show have denied rumors that the long-running talk show is coming to an end following the continued backlash against the host. The Sun alleges the show is set to be axed due to ratings falling 14 percent to a new season 17 low rating of 1.2. • Out Music: Yanni Burton (top photo) turns the spotlight on his own struggles of letting go and moving on from past relationships in his new single and music video, “A Part of Me.” “I have a history of getting lost in memories and emotions,” says Yanni. “To the point where I become consumed with panic, anxiety and I can’t function properly or move on with my life.” Produced by Yanni with his close friend Tiger Darrow, the song contains a dreamy, trippy soundscape and is darker and more emotionally intense than his previous singles. However, it still contains the pop/dance feel the artist has become known for. Check it out below.

Vanity Fair: The Trump campaign is considering canceling the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida after the city mandated that people wear masks indoors to slow the explosion of COVID-19 cases. • KIT212: Hit up Kenneth’s latest round-up of the what’s what in local LGBTQ publications like South Florida’s Hot Spots (below). Pink News: Utah County Commissioner Nathan Ivie, 40, who came out as the state’s first openly gay elected Republican last year, just lost his bid for reelection. He says his loss is “absolutely” because he came out. He won his previous election by 81 percent. • Gay Star News: RuPaul has completely wiped his Instagram account of all posts and deleted his Twitter account entirely – but fans don’t know why. Nevertheless, fans have come up with all sorts of theories as to why the accounts have disappeared.

Out Music: Bright Light Bright Light’s Latest Is Totally ‘Cool’

Bright Light Bright Light (Rod Thomas) & crew in ‘I Used To Be Cool’ (credit: Tyler Jensen)
Bright Light Bright Light serves up a bouncy, Fire Island beach-y synth-pop bop with the release of his latest song and video “I Used To Be Cool.” A cheeky ode to cherishing your “15 minutes in the sun,” the music video for the new track is a campy homage to ’80s/’90s cinema, that feels one-part summer romance, one-part John Waters irreverence, and one-part classic MTV music video nostalgia.
(screen capture from ‘I Used To Be Cool’)
Fans of the 1980s will recognize tribute moments to Risky Business, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Desperately Seeking Susan and the music videos for “Magic” by The Cars and “Rock the Cradle” by Billy Idol. The new video finds Bright Light Bright Light (aka LGBTQ pop star Rod Thomas) and two friends tending to the summer housework of a dreamy heartthrob. Not-so-subtle swooning, a saturated daydream sequence, and warm synths all add up to the perfect musical 80s homage for your July 4th holiday.

This is the third single from the artist’s upcoming album, titled Fun City, a collection of 80s-inspired dance-pop, as well as a musical love letter to the LGBTQ community. According to Thomas, the vocals for Fun City were recorded on the empty dancefloor of East Village gay club Bedlam, a conscious decision made in an effort to channel the energy of the queer trailblazers that influenced him like Sylvester, Erasure, Scissor Sisters and Hercules & Love Affair. The title of the album is a historical reference to a quote from NYC mayor John V. Lindsay who on his first day in office in 1966, amidst a crippling transit strike, said “I still think it’s a fun city.” A Randy Report favorite for years, Bright Light Bright Light has been a staple of the international LGBTQ+ music scene for over a decade, having released three prior albums and touring as both a solo artist and as support alongside pop royalty like Elton John, Cher, Erasure, Ellie Goulding and Scissor Sisters. Check out my previous coverage of Bright Light Bright Light here.

Out Music: Paul Middleton ‘When Love Takes Over’

Out singer/songwriter Paul Middleton
In the wake of Pride festivals and celebrations around the world being canceled during Pride month, out UK singer Paul Middleton lifts spirits with an all-new cover of the Kelly Rowland and David Guetta hit track, ‘When Love Takes Over’ with a Pride-themed music video to celebrate Pride Month. From Middleton:

With pride canceled and with the lockdown affecting everyone, I tried to capture what made people happy in their day to day lives and connect to the lyrics of the song.

From a mental health approach, we all have gone through tough times together. I wanted this video to show that by doing something positive and healthy for yourself it can have a great knock on effect.

From a pride perspective, I wanted to capture the colourful diversity and beauty in the scene. I am so grateful to these beautiful people that gave their time for this video. When love does take over – great things happen to you.

“When Love Takes Over” is now available to stream/download on all digital download sites.
