Texas Gov. Rick Perry compares being gay to alcoholism

Speaking to the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco on Wednesday night, Texas Governor Rick Perry compared being gay to alcoholism.

The comment came in response to a question about the Texas Republican Party’s recent addition of a platform plank which advocates gay “reparative therapy:”

“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that. I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”

This isn’t the first time Perry has used the analogy. Back in 2008, TIME Magazine caught this:

…in a little-noticed passage in his first book, “On My Honor,” a encomium on the Boy Scouts published in 2008, Perry also drew a parallel between homosexuality and alcoholism. “Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink,” he wrote. “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”

Interesting how Texas conservatives profess a “live and let live” attitude EXCEPT when it comes to the gays.

Several major news organization has picked up on Perry’s comment today.

Oklahoma politician supports stoning gays to death

Scott Esk, a Tea Party candidate for Oklahoma’s State House, was found on Facebook advocating that homosexuals should be stoned to death, and that to “ignore as a nation things worthy of death would be very remiss.”

And when challenged by his Facebook friend if he indeed believes that homosexuals should be put to death, and Esk responds, “I think we would totally be in the right to do it.”

In a subsequent interview, he stood by his Facebook opinions regarding stoning gays.

Don’t worry though. It’s not just gays that Esk isn’t fond of.

On November 25th of last year, Esk posted on his Facebook  that he felt moved to call 911 when he saw a group of Hispanics gathered in front of a shopping mall. He was surprised when the dispatcher kept asking what crime was bring committed and he replied that he assumed there were in the US illegally.

Explains a lot about him I think.

Nancy Grace calls Anita Bryant a “sweet lady” who spoke “on some issue dear to her heart”

After the recent strange kerfuffle with Brad Pitt on a red carpet, Nancy Grace took time on her Headline News Network show to discuss “stalkers” who attack stars.

In the middle of the discussion, Nancy takes a very strange left turn to anti-gay activist Anita Bryant, who famously advocated against gays and lesbians in the 1970s. Nancy brings up the famous press conference where a man threw a pie in Bryant’s face.

In bringing this up, Nancy says “She makes me think of my own mother. Why would you do this to a ‘sweet lady'” who was “speaking on some issue dear to her heart?”

That “issue” she was speaking to was denying rights to and vilifying gays and lesbians. At the time, Bryant compared gays to prostitutes and folks who have sex with animals.  Bryant’s legacy became being DEFINED at the anti-gay voice of the decade in the 1970s.

Nancy tries to play this off as if it was some pathological syndrome when the truth was the man was upset that she was campaigning against his existence at the time.

What an odd clip to use in discussion “stalkers.” Watch the exchange below:

Jonah HIll apologizes for using homophobic slur at photographer

22 Jump Street star Jonah Hill went on the Howard Stern Show this morning to take responsibility and apologize for using a homophobic slur at a paparazzo over the weekend.

TMZ published a video showing Hill saying, “Suck my d***, you f*****!” to a photographer that Hill said had been hurling caustic comments at him all day.

This morning, Hill had this to say:

I’m upset. Because from the day I was born and publicly, I’ve been a gay rights activist. Okay?

Now, — you saw a 40-second video. This person had been following me around. Just to give it some context, not excusing what I said in any way. This person had been following around all day, had been saying hurtful things about my family, really hurtful things about me personally. And I played into exactly what he wanted and lost my cool. And in that moment, I said a disgusting word that does not at all reflect how I feel about any group of people.

I grew up with gay family members. I’m leaving here to go spend the day with one of my closest co-workers and best friend who is gay and is getting married. I’m going to stand in his wedding.

I’m not at all defending my choice of words, but I’m happy to be the poster boy for thinking about what you say and how those words – even if you don’t intend them – and how they’re rooted in hate and that’s bullshit and I shouldn’t have said that.

Look, I think I’m pretty good at making movies; I’m not good at being a famous person. I’m just not. There are some people who are meant for it.

If you call me ugly, if you call family members of mine drug addicts and maniacs, I’m eventually going to lose my cool.

Now what I said in that moment was a disgusting and hurtful term. I should’ve just said either nothing or “fuck you.” Instead I used a word I don’t use in my personal life. It’s not part of my vernacular.

I’m happy to take the heat for using this disgusting word. What I won’t allow is for anyone — it would break my heart to think that anyone would think, especially with all the work I’ve done and all the loved ones I have, that I would be against anyone for their sexuality.

According to TMZ, Jonah has been a very vocal supporter of gay rights speaking out against Russia’s anti-gay laws leading up to the Winter Olympics.

Propaganda: “March for Marriage 2014”

The scare tactics in this video promoting the National Organization for Marriage’s “March for Marriage” on June 19th includes just about everything they can think of:

Intolerance!
Unelected judges!
Bakers!
Photographers!
Benghazi! (Ok, that one they did leave out this one time…).

Sad that all of this is in the name of preventing a segment of Americans from having equal rights.

Bless NOM’s little tiny heart.

Colorado: Civil Rights Commision affirms ruling that baker discriminated against gay couple

In a unanimous decision from the seven-member Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Jack Phillips of the Masterpiece Cakeshop was found to have violated civil rights law when he refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple in 2012.

Today’s decision upholds  a previous ruling on the same lawsuit.

“I can believe anything I want, but if I’m going to do business here, I’d ought to not discriminate against people,” Commissioner Raju Jaram said.

Speaking to reporters after the ruling, Phillips said the decision violates his First Amendment rights to free speech and free exercise of his religion. “I will stand by my convictions until somebody shuts me down.”

Phillips added that supporters have been so supportive in buying cookies and brownies that he does not currently make wedding cakes.

The couple who sued Phillips, Dave Mullins and Charlie Craig, were pleased that the commission roundly rejected Phillips’ arguments. “We’re just thrilled by that,” Mullins said.

While gay marriage remains illegal in Colorado, the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act prohibits public accommodations, including businesses such as Masterpiece Cakeshop, from refusing service based on factors such as race, sex, marital status or sexual orientation.

In what I imagine is an act of futility, Phillips was ordered to stop discriminating against gay people and to report quarterly for two years on staff anti-discrimination training and any customers he refuses to serve.

Phillips’ attorney indicated an appeal of the ruling to the Colorado Court of Appeals is being considered.

Right wing fanatic Janet Porter calls Disney’s Gay Days “public displays of perversion”

Anti-gay activist Janet Porter

Right Wing Watch points up this charming radio bulletin from anti-gay activist Janet Porter that “the homosexual agenda is planning to once again descend on Disney World in Orlando, Florida to expose your children to far more than Mickey Mouse and Space Mountain.”

Porter warns listeners that “cross-dressing men will be among those parading public displays of perversion.”

In case you’ve never had the chance to experience Gay Days at Disney, allow me to set the story straight, if you will: Gay Days at Disney are no more “perverse” than any other day at a Disney theme park. I’ve been many times and it’s merely a day to underline the inclusiveness of the parks to gay and lesbian families. These families are interested in enjoying the Disney experience – not turning the day into some drag show.

It’s insulting that Porter, who I’m pretty sure has never attended a Disney “Gay Day,” would spout off about things she knows nothing about.

But then, that’s par for the course coming from her edge of the loony spectrum.

Listen to the icky message to her followers below.

Tony Perkins hating on equal protections in Houston

Tony Perkins has become famous for his use of hyperbole to support his positions. When he cites “serious criminal punishment” for violating the Houston ordinance, what he is referring to is a fine of “not less than $250 nor more than $500.”

Houston’s fine for exceeding the speed limit by 15mph is $240.

“Can five words change the outcome of a radical measure in Houston? Locals hope so. When openly lesbian Mayor Annise Parker said, ‘This debate is about me,’ she may have been the undoing of the very ordinance she’s fighting for. Under the watchful gaze of the rest of the country, America’s fourth largest city has been locked in a vicious debate over an anti-freedom, anti-safety, anti-Christian proposal that could shape the landscape for special privilege. Wednesday, the public battle reconvenes, as the City Council votes on a measure that would force Houstonians to celebrate homosexuality and transgenderism, regardless of their personal beliefs, or face serious criminal punishment.

“As part of the bill, Mayor Parker (who said this effort was ‘intensely personal’) men would be allowed to use women’s showers, locker rooms, and bathrooms (and vice-versa) based on their ‘perceived gender’ — opening the door (quite literally) for sexual predators to prey on women and girls under the guise of gender confusion. The backlash against the ordinance has been severe, thanks in large part to a strong coalition of pastors and local conservatives who refuse to be steamrolled by the forces of political correctness. While the actual vote was put off, the opposition hasn’t. It continues to sound the alarm to local families about the devastation this could inflict — not just on Houston, but any city emboldened to try a similar stunt.” – Hate group leader Tony Perkins, via press release.

Fired Rochester radio hosts apologize for 12 minute on-air transphobic rant

Former Rochester, NY radio hosts Kimberly and Beck have issued an apology for their transphobic rant against transgender people during an on-air segment about city employees healthcare benefits that ended with being fired from their morning radio show on station 98.9

Said Kimberly and Beck in a statement (via All Access):

We are very sorry for the hurt and pain we have caused anyone, especially those in the Transgender community and their friends and families. What we said and the manner in which we handled ourselves was wrong; we take full responsibility and we deeply apologize to any and all that we offended.

Our attempt was to discuss a controversial healthcare issue; however our lack of sensitivity and understanding of the Transgender people and their plight created 12 minutes of radio we that wish we could take back.

We fully understand ENTERCOM’s position and their decision to dismiss us. It is their right and we accept their decision and our responsibility in it.

ENTERCOM has been and will continue to be a strong advocate for the LGBT community and we are proud to have been helpful in ENTERCOM’s efforts over our 13 years with the company.

It is our hope that this situation can be a time of learning and understanding about the Transgender community and not a time for additional anger and insensitivity. This is a community of individuals who struggle painfully to be themselves and find the support and comfort they deserve. We believe that this can be a chance for all of us to stop the ignorance and find our humanity.”

Tony Perkins says marriage equality will lead to the “Dissolution of the Republic”

Hate group leader Tony Perkins

Hate group leader Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is so freaked out over the many recent rulings in favor of marriage equality he’s now telling anyone who will listen that equal rights for gays will “drive a wedge between parent and child” and lead to the “dissolution of the Republic.”

From Right Wing Watch:

The Family Research Council president told Mefferd that the marriage debate is “is literally about the entire culture: it’s about the rule of law, it’s about the country, it’s about our future, it’s about redefining the curriculum in our schools, it’s about driving a wedge between parent and child, it’s about the loss of religious freedom, it’s about the inability to be who we are as a people.”

SRSLY?

Talk about fear mongering. It’s really insidious what this man does. And the fact that media outlets like CNN will allow the man airtime to spew his hideous ideas just to divide the country is ridiculous. It’s like giving the leader of the KKK airtime…
