Rochester radio hosts fired for 12 minute transphobic rant on-air

Yesterday I posted about a radio morning show team in Rochester, New York, that went on a 12 minute transphobic rant after reading the news that the city would begin to offer healthcare benefits to transgender people.

The comments between the two radio personalities were extremely vicious and ill-informed. The hosts have now been fired:

“This morning Entercom fired Kimberly and Beck effective immediately,” Entercom Rochester vice president and general manager Sue Munn said in a prepared statement.

“Their hateful comments against the transgender community do not represent our station or our company. We deeply apologize to the transgender community, the community of Rochester, and anyone else who was offended by their comments.

“We are proud of our past work on behalf of the local LGBT community and we remain committed to that partnership.”

Amy Kushnir still spinning publicity after storming offset at “The Broadcast”

Amy Kushnir continues her media parade highlighting her outraged exit during a segment of her Dallas TV show “The Broadcast.”

She talks with Glenn Beck here about the fallout of her storming offset last week.

A few inconsistencies here though. She says her comments were not about the “Michael Sam draft kiss” being about the fact that the couple were same-sex. She says she’d have said the same thing about a straight couple. Kushnir says she was upset about seeing a public display of affection on TV.

But when Beck brings up other famous “media kisses,” he mentions Al and Tipper Gore but Kushnir swings back to Madonna and Britney Spears – a same-sex kiss.

Kushnir also makes a point of describing the kiss as “nothing natural.”

She later mentions that many people have come up to her, thanking her for “expressing what we believe” and that they support her. But what is it that these supporters believe? To denounce public displays of affection? OR are they thanking her for standing against a same-sex kiss in public?

She complains at one point that she was upset that the kiss on ESPN was a publicity stunt. But it seems like Kushnir is the one chasing publicity at this point, no?

Recent reports indicate that Kushnir is the daughter of disgraced scamvangelist Rev. Robert Tilton, who bilked followers out of millions of dollars in the 90s. It takes a talent to convince a TV audience of one thing when you’re really doing another. Perhaps she learned a lot from her famous father.

NOM requests and is immediately DENIED stay in Oregon marriage equality ruling

Before the ruling is even handed down, the National Organization for Marriage filed an emergency request for stay in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Before you could even blink, the Ninth Circuit refused the stay with a one sentence decision.  See below.

“And stay out!!!”

Dallas morning show host Amy Kushnir on what’s “appropriate” for TV

Graphic via Memeographs

On Tuesday, Dallas morning show host Amy Kushnir stormed off the set in the middle of a segment because she was so upset that ESPN showed NFL draftee Michael Sam kiss his boyfriend in a moment of celebration.

Last night, she appeared on FOX News to explain that she “loves everyone” but she worries about certain subject matter being shown on television at inappropriate times.

Please note Ms. Kushnir’s excitement when she hosted the world-famous Chippendales on her show in February. At the end of the segment, she ends up – quite comfortably – being picked up and held the handsome hunks.

Now my readers know I love me some Chippendales. The Chippendales offer good, clean fun. The guys even point out during their interview that their show is “production number” based and they don’t do the “strip and tip” thing. No G-strings, no dollar bills. Just fun.

I have no problem seeing the Chipps on morning TV, just as I have no problem with Michael Sam giving his bf a kiss in celebration.  You see WAY more skin and kissing on any soap opera these days.  And I don’t mind that, either… 🙂

But Ms. Kushnir seems to “slice and dice” morality on TV a bit more precisely than I.  In the segment Tuesday, she indicated that it was the Michael Sam kiss on TV that bothered her and had it been a straight couple, she would have said “get a room!”

OR – is the issue really the fact that openly gay Michael Sam is a problem for her, and heterosexual fun with the Chippendales is not?

Dallas morning show co-host Amy Kushnir storms off set mid-segment

Courtney Kerr (L) and Amy Kushnir (R)

The chat got heated on Dallas’ “The Broadcast” yesterday when co-host Amy Kushnir got so upset over Michael Sam’s “draft kiss” that she stormed off the set in mid-segment. What a real pro.

Said Kushnir, before stomping off:

“When parents do not have a choice about whether or not they want their children to see this, it is wrong…I don’t call it a moment of celebration…It’s being pushed in faces. I don’t want to see that. I don’t want to see cake in your face, kissing each other.”

[snip]

“Here’s the thing. ESPN would not have aired any of it had he been kissing his wife.”

The usual cries of gays “shoving it in my face” make their appearance. If the sentiments weren’t so icky, this would be funny.

Note that Kushnir says she doesn’t like to see public displays of affection. THAT’s what bothered her. But – check out the main image on her Facebook page.  Why, is that a public display of affection?  Is she kissing someone and “shoving it down our throats?” Truth be told, what Ms. Kushnir doesn’t like are PDAs between the gays.

Anti-gay FRC spokesman Ken Blackwell and Texas sportscaster Dale Hansen discuss Michael Sam draft

During the May 12 edition of CNN Tonight, anchor Bill Weir invited Texas sportscaster Dale Hansen, whose February speech in support of Sam created an Internet sensation, and the anti-gay Family Research Council’s (FRC) Ken Blackwell to discuss the drafting of Michael Sam and his celebratory kiss with his boyfriend.

As we’ve come to expect, Hansen was very articulate and stayed on the subject of a football player getting a chance to prove himself on the field.

But, during the segment, Blackwell tries to suggest that Sam kissed his boyfriend to help push an “agenda” and speculated that the kiss was a “political prophylactic” to protect Sam from getting fired.  And Blackwell also veers into the underbrush by bringing up Tim Tebow who has nothing to do with the discussion.

While I know CNN was trying to have two sides to the conversation, even host Bill Weir looked a bit incredulous at some of Blackwell’s statements – WHICH basically followed the FRC’s usual talking points.  Here’s just part of Blackwell’s screed about Michael Sam:

I thought the kiss was inappropriate and over the top, but I am just surprised with the duplicity among owners and leadership of the NFL. I take it it was just a few years ago when there were players who criticized Tim Tebow for wearing his faith on his sleeve. There were folks who basically said he was not a good football player; that’s why they were critical of him, not because he was a professed Christian who practiced his faith in all aspects of his life.

I really do question the network’s judgment, editorial judgment in putting the kiss on — on TV. Look, this is a very clear opportunity for Mr. Sam and others to co-op a professional sports, in this case the NFL, as a platform and as a force multiplier for advancing their agenda.

Let me just say that I hope he hasn’t created a political prophylactic that will shield his inability to make the team as a football player — as a football player because he’s an advocate for a lifestyle.

Newt Gingrich: Gays should be more open and understanding of anti-gay

In a CNN Crossfire discussion about ex-NFL player Derrick Ward’s Twitter meltdown over the Michael Sam kiss, Newt Gingrich said that LGBT folks should be more “open and understanding” and tolerant of those who object to their existence.

Said Gingrich:

“You guys talk about how you want to be inclusive, except of course if somebody tweets this, then [there are] death threat or let’s send them off to sensitivity training. I mean it strikes me as repression, that’s not inclusive. Shouldn’t you also be teaching people who are gay to be open and understanding [of anti-gay views]?”

Of course, the answer is “no.” You don’t teach African-Americans to be more tolerant of a racist.

Peter LaBarbera is mad at FOX News

Anti-gay Peter LaBarbera, attacks Fox News for running a story about Miami Dolphins getting in trouble for saying negative things about Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend after being drafted.  Apparently the story was “one-sided” and didn’t blame Michael Sam for something:

“Don Jones had no reason to apologize. Defending historic Judeo-Christian morality and being horrified by sinful, perverse acts like same-sex kissing in public is not ‘hate’ or ‘bigotry.’ It’s called being normal.

“Please pray for this lost soul, Michael Sam, who could lead many young men astray by popularizing a grievous sin. It is tragic that the establishment power structure–media, Hollywood, academia, the corporate world–now reward those who embrace homosexuality, and punish those who oppose it. The very opposite of anti-sodomy laws, huh? Yes, America is now, morally speaking, an upside-down culture–descending willy-nilly into godlessness and sexual/gender chaos. But no civilization that glories in sexual immorality will survive in the long run.”

Seriously. Michael Sam realizes his life-long dream and in the moment turns to the love of his life and… shakes his hand? Is that what Peter LaBarbera would expect?

It’s a kiss. People in love kiss. Get over it, Peter.

Oregon: Supporters of “Religious Freedom” ballot initiative suspend campaign

The anti-gay Oregon Family Council along with Friends of Religious Freedom have announced they will not be moving forward with IP 52 – the proposed ballot measure that would allow businesses in the state to turn away LGBT people as an “exercise of religion.”

The AP reports:

The campaign sought to portray the issue as one that frees business owners from having to violate their religious beliefs by abiding by Oregon law.

“But the certified ballot title does not acceptably state this,” Friends of Religious Freedom said in the release issued late Friday afternoon. “Indeed, it states it as intolerant instead of protecting equal rights of conscience.”

The ballot language approved said a “Yes” vote “creates ‘religious belief’ exceptions to anti-discrimination laws,” language the measure’s supporters said unfairly prejudiced voters against them.

The anti-gay proponents original text read as follows:

“This 2014 Initiative shall be known as the Protect Religious Freedom Initiative and is intended to exempt a person from supporting same-sex ceremonies in violation of deeply held religious beliefs.”

Bryan Fischer: “There is no equality between homosexuality and heterosexuality”

From our friend at American Family Association, Bryan Fischer, talking on the idea of equality between heterosexuals and homosexuals:

“They are not equal.

“They are not equal in morality. They are not equal in worth. They are not equal in procreative power. They are not equal in their consistency with God’s design.

“There is no equality between homosexuality and heterosexuality.”
