Pride Music: June 27, 2020
It’s the last weekend of Pride 2020, and since we can’t get out on an actual dance floor here’s new music to bop to from Lizzo and the Fab 5, Ariana and the Rose, The Aces, GRiZ and Sara Bareilles. • Self-care queen Lizzo teams up with the men of Queer Eye for the music video for her hip-hop/pop tune, “Soulmate.” The colorful video is an animated Pride-themed romp with the Fab 5 as Lizzo picnics with Bobby, throws a corgi party with Antoni and throws down a pole dance with Karamo.
• Ariana and the Rose serve up an inclusive, colorful celebration of all kinds of love with “True Love.” The synth-pop dance track is a bouncy bop, and the video features six diverse, real-life couples spanning the diverse spectrums of race, age and sexuality. Ariana DiLorenzo, the band’s frontwoman, is a “proud and fierce ally for the LGBTQ community,” and told NewNowNext that performing at Pride events, lending her voice as a soundtrack to the celebrations, “is an honor.”
• “Daydream” is the latest single from Utah-based all-girl pop/rock band The Aces. While the infectious track is about long-distance lovers, the tune can easily relate to the distance many of us are feeling during the ongoing pandemic. The band, launched by queer sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez, decided to make the video about the crew out on a summer adventure rather than a too “on-the-nose” tribute to romance.
• Multi-instrumentalist and producer GRiZ releases his new single, “Medusa,” featuring DJ and producer Wreckno. What he coins his ‘queer anthem banger’ is a bass-fueled, hip-hop-laden slice of empowerment, created to uplift the underrepresented LGBTQIA+ voices in dance music. In celebration of Pride Month, “Medusa” is a message to queer kids encouraging them to embrace exactly who they are. (Explicit lyrics).
• And finally, Sara Bareilles covers the title track from the Grammy/Emmy Award-winning TV special, “Free To Be…You And Me.” Bareilles’s pure, soulful voice is perfect for the folk/pop tune. Created by actress and activist Marlo Thomas (That Girl) in 1972, the iconic album, book, and television special was the first anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-judgment entertainment for children. All proceeds for the project will benefit NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Fans of the song will notice the new version of the includes two lyric changes. The word “children” has been changed to “people” in one of the song’s main refrains. And, in order to better embrace the non-binary community, a lyric that referred to ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ growing up to be ‘men’ and ‘women’ was rewritten: “Every child in this land, may you all understand, that you’re proud and you’re strong and you are right where you belong.”
Mayor Pete Goes Fanboy On Lizzo “I’m 100 Percent That…”
CBS This Morning hosted rising stars from both the political and music worlds as Democratic presidential hopeful Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Lizzo shared the green room this morning. Introducing the upcoming segments, host Gayle King turned to Buttigieg asking, “Mr. Mayor, what are three words that would best describe you?” Like a true fan, Mayor Pete replied, “‘Standing near Lizzo’ right now.” Responding to the same question, Lizzo – dressed in her diva best – answered, “Glamorous, talented, and booty-ful.” In a clear reference to Lizzo’s big hit “Truth Hurts,” King turned to Mayor Pete asking if he “had any DNA tests recently?” Fans of luscious Lizzo know the lyric, “I just took a DNA test / Turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.” Showing he’s a Lizzo fan, Buttigieg didn’t miss a beat answering, “Yes, and I’m 100 percent (short pause) that nominee to lead the way to the future!” These are heady times for both Lizzo and Buttigieg. On top of her 8 Grammy Award nominations including Record of the Year and Song of the Year (“Truth Hurts”), the body-positive singer was just named TIME Magazine’s ‘Entertainer of the Year.’ And recent polls show Buttigieg surging to the front of the pack in the upcoming Democratic contests in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

Lizzo On A Mission: “Putting Big, Black, Femme, LGBTQ+ Bodies On Stages And Telling Our Stories”

With all the fun going on at Coachella this year – Ariana Grande reuniting *NSYNC, public sex on a Ferris wheel, former GOP Congressman Aaron Schock getting handsy with a guy– some have wondered why LGBTQ folks spend their money or take part in a festival whose owner, Philip Anchutz, makes sizable donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations. A fan of Lizzo’s posed that very question on her Instagram, and the diva came back with the best answer. User jacobthebeau asked, “I’m so confused why so many people are supporting this event that supports anti-lgbt organizations?!” And Lizzo responded writing, “Because Jacob, whether we like it or not most major organizations are run by bigoted millionaires that donate to bigoted organizations.” That said, Lizzo isn’t daunted by standing up to ‘bigoted millionaires.’ She knows what her job is, and it’s not to stand by and watch bad things happen. “I realize my activism is to disrupt those spaces and spread my message to thousands of ppl,” said the 30-year-old rapper. “Y’all may not agree w it and that’s ok. But know that I’m doing what I gotta do to make sure my big black ass voice is heard.” “Can’t wait to dismantle the hate that funds this country,” she added. “But until then, imma be putting big, black, femme, lgbtq+ bodies on stages and telling our stories.” Here’s the full post with Lizzo’s exchange with fans in the comments. Lizzo struggled with her own body image issues at a young age. So today, she advocates for body positivity and self-love, making diversity the focus of her music. Her songs have addressed body image, (“Juice”), sexuality (“Boys”), and race (“My Skin”). Her back-up dancers, known as the Big Grrrls, are all plus-size dancers. And – she loves herself some fierce drag queens. For instance, check out Lizzo’s latest music video, “Juice,” where she not only brings her own big and beautiful self to the small screen, but she’s got some friends from RPDR with her. The former Drag Race guest judge is joined by Mariah Balenciaga, Morgan McMichaels, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, A’keria C. Davenport, Detox, Asia O’Hara, Soju, Sonique and Mayhem Miller all lip-syncing to the body positive bop.
Miss Lizzo is everywhere these days because her new album, Cuz I Love You, drops on Friday, April 19. In addition to Coachella, Lizzo has a 25-date tour plus appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, covers on New York Magazine and Allure, and a feature spread in Playboy.
