Sen. Marco Rubio Doesn’t Like Being Called A “Bigot”

On CBS’ Face The Nation this past weekend, GOP White House hopeful (currently trailing fourth in most polls), cast himself as the victim saying he’s been called a “bigot” for not supporting equal rights for LGBTs.

“Increasingly, Americans feel out of place, because it seems like the people who have access to power and influence win, and everybody else is left on the outside looking in,” Rubio said. “People that hold traditional values are often described as bigots and haters.”

Arguing that President Barack Obama has said that “people that don’t support same-sex marriage are wrong,” Rubio then added, “I have been called a bigot for not supporting [same-sex marriage].”

Last week, the Florida senator suggested that if he is elected president, the justices he will nominate to the U.S. Supreme Court may roll back marriage equality.

It’s worth noting that Sen. Rubio has actively/publicly campaigned against marriage equality and other rights for LGBTs.

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines “bigot” as: “a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices.”

I think that’s a pretty fair description of Sen. Rubio’s situation. He does hold to his own opinions and does not shift from those positions.

So, maybe bigot IS exactly the right word…?

Tennessee Official Bashes High School Student: “Let The Little Homo Sue”

I reported earlier this week about Lance Sanderson, an 18-year-old student at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, wanted to bring a same-sex date to the school’s homecoming dance.

After school officials denied his request, Sanderson shared his story on social media and launched a petition in hopes of changing their minds. It didn’t.

Ultimately, Sanderson did not attend the homecoming dance at all. But, referencing his social media outreach on the issue, the school suspended Sanderson because they were upset about the unwanted media.

Now, Clark Plunk, a Lakeland commissioner, has publicly attacked the 18 year old in a Facebook rant which includes deriding the LGBT community as a whole. Here’s the text of the post via Towleroad:

It’s a Christian school so i you don’t like the rules don’t go there. As usual you have one person trying to change the rules just for himself. I’m told by the alumni the gay kid is looking for publicity. I hate the term gay. It makes them sound like they are happy and ‘Gay’ And they want to call people that criticize them homophobes to make them sound mean. As a whole, gays are mean, cruel spiteful people with an axe to grind.

The kids love the school a hate their school is in the limelight over a gay kid and his gay boyfriend….This is not about a homo and his rights it’s about a school that is loved by thousands and their memories and their right to keep their history and Christian values intact.

I would say let the little homo sue all he wants. The alumni of CBHS will meet him dollar for dollar and lawyer for lawyer. This is a threat to our values, our Christian values. Everyone shudders when the homosexuals say the word sue. They are vicious spiteful people.

Sanderson responded gracefully on his Facebook page:

I have been shown a few intolerant comments that were made against myself and other LGBT people. I have nothing but forgiveness for the people who wrote or agree with these comments. I recognize that we all have different beliefs and were taught from varying viewpoints. I hope that individuals and the community as a whole will use this as an opportunity to learn about other people’s beliefs. I know that through education and acceptance, we will move forward as a stronger community.

James Corden Calls Out Kentucky High School Who

Betsy Layne High School in rural Kentucky honored the boys basketball team with a two-page spread in the school’s yearbook.

Well, almost all the team. One senior was left out of the tribute: Dalton Maldonado, the team’s starting point guard who came out publicly as gay a couple months ago.

James Corden of The Late Late Show took on the scandal last night during his opening:

“He’s a gay basketball player. Or as I like to call him, ‘a basketball player.’ Because there’s no such thing as gay basketball.”

“If you’re a homophobic school, you do not call yourself Betsy Layne High. Betsy Layne sounds like a girl who would LOVE a gay friend”

Leslie Jordan Faces Down Young Homophobes At West Hollywood Starbucks

Here’s a life lesson for homophobes: do not head into the gayest coffee shop in the gayest neighborhood in the world and start trouble with an Emmy Award-winning queen in attendance.

She will cut a bitch.

Apparently, late Wednesday morning, three young men in their 20s walked into the Starbucks located on Santa Monica Blvd right in the heart of West Hollywood.

For some reason, the three started throwing out antigay slurs at customers who, by all accounts were deep in thought over their $5 lattes.

Queerty has the details:

“You will die, fucking faggots!” one of the men allegedly announced to the entire store.

Joseph Daniels, who was waiting in line at the time, told WEHOville, “It was very scary and unexpected.” But he wasn’t going to let a group of d-bags get the best of him. He walked over to the men and told them their behavior was “rude.”

Then the manager came along and told them to get the hell out.

The thugs refused to leave and proceeded to call everyone in the store “faggots.” And that’s when things got really heated. Because unbeknownst to the homophobes, Leslie Jordan happened to be there.

Yes, the Leslie Jordan.

The 4’11 Southern gentleman approached the men, fuming, and told them to “Get out of my house!” before chasing them out the front doors.

Once outside, the men continued screaming antigay epithets. But Jordan wasn’t having any of it.

“The guy lunged at Leslie to hit him,” Daniels said of one of the men. “Then Leslie threw his drink at the guy. Then (another) guy threw his drink to hit me.”

Police were called. They advised Jordan and the other patrons not to file charges against the homophobes, saying that if they did the men could accuse them of assault for throwing coffee at them.

Daniels told WEHOville that the three men stormed away, but continued screaming “faggots” and making obscene gestures.

“He provoked it,” Daniels said of one of the three men. “He spewed hate crime words against everybody and threw a drink at Leslie. Why couldn’t he have been charged with disorderly conduct?”

Drunk Homophobic Attacker At DFW Airport Gets Slap On The Wrist

Back in October I reported on an incident at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport where an apparently drunk man attacked a man for being perceived to be gay. After his arrest, theories abounded that he would receive a mere slap on the wrist for his violent behavior.

And now, that’s exactly what happened.

Towleroad has the details:

The passenger who went on a drunken, violent, anti-gay rampage that was caught on video at DFW International Airport in October will pay $474 in fines for the incident, according to a court spokeswoman.

McCleish Christmas Benham, now 28, of Shelbyville, Tennessee, assaulted two people while yelling anti-gay epithets, before other passengers tackled him to the ground and he was arrested on Oct. 23.

A bystander captured the incident on video and posted it on YouTube, where it’s been viewed more than 5 million times.

Benham was charged with public intoxication and simple assault, both class-C misdemeanors each punishable by a maximum $500 fine, but no jail time. The case was referred to the Municipal Court in the city of Grapevine, Texas.

When asked by police how many alcoholic drinks he had had, Benham replied: ‘About 100.’

A cellphone video of the altercation has received over 5 million views.

Gay Couple Responds To Vandalism With Fabulosity

As Metro News reports, a gay couple came home recently to find their front door vandalized by a homophobic jerk.

But instead of stewing in anger, the gays responded in absolutely fabulous style:

“We regret to inform you that you completely failed to use glitter paint and/or sequins, your work looked rushed, and your handwriting was positively atrocious.

“It is for these reasons that we had to remove your work from our door with sandpaper.

“Fabulously yours, The Gays in Apt. 611.”

Drunk Homophobe From DFW Airport Incident Could Get Away With Only $1K Fine

McCleish Christmas Benham

Last week I reported on an incident at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport where a drunk homophobe attacked another traveler he assumed to be gay only to be stopped by a group of bystanders.

From Lone Star Q:

According to the report obtained by Lone Star Q, the man’s name is McCleish Christmas Benham, 27. He is currently charged with public intoxication and simple assault, both class-C misdemeanors each punishable by a maximum $500 fine, but no jail time.

However, if prosecutors choose to utilize Texas’ hate crimes law, they could enhance the assault charge to a class-B misdemeanor. Class-B misdemeanors are punishable by 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine per offense.

Pretty hard to imagine the prosecutors wouldn’t charge the man with hate crime here since Benham was caught on video calling his victim a “queer.”

But in Texas, folks aren’t very concerned with protecting LGBT citizens, so don’t hold your breath on that one..

If not, Benham could get away with a maximum of $1,000 fine and no jail time whatsoever.

Here’s the arrest report:

Dallas: Drunk Homophobe Gets Taken Down After Attacking Possibly Gay Man

In an apparent anti-gay attack, a seemingly drunk traveler attacked what he clearly assumed was a gay man at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport yesterday.

From Raw Story:

The video is dated Thursday, October 23, and shows an unnamed angry man bellowing and threatening another passenger who is wearing a jacket and a pink shirt.

A tall man in a black cowboy hat approaches and asks the angry man what he’s upset about.

“Queers!” the man shouted. “That’s what I’m upset about. This faggot right here.”

After a tense exchange, the angry man kicks the man in the pink shirt, then slaps at him and grabs his hair.

A number of people rush to intervene as the man is tackled and put on the floor.

The man in the cowboy hat can be heard saying loudly, “No way! No way, you motherfucker. You ain’t doin’ that fucking shit, motherfucker.”

You can hear the man as he’s being handcuffed saying “I punched him square in the mouth in the fuckin’ mouth is what I did. Because this is America. When I get up I’m gonna beat the shit out of him.”

Props to the folks who jump in so quick.  AND to Andrew Kennedy who captured the scuffle on video.
