Pennsylvania police chief suspended for video rant made with public property

Mark Kessler, the rural Pennsylvania sheriff whose machine-gun-firing “fuck all you libtards” video went viral, has been suspended after a borough council vote of 5-1.

The punishment was not for the sentiments shared but because he used “borough property for non-borough purposes without prior borough permission” when he made the video where he’s seen shooting semiautomatic and automatic weapons.

The borough council in the coal town of Gilberton said that police Chief Mark Kessler used “borough property for non-borough purposes without prior borough permission” when he made the video where he’s seen shooting semiautomatic and automatic weapons.

Thousands of gun-rights activists descended on the town of 750 for the meeting, openly sporting firearms, CNN affiliate WPMT reported.

“I make no apologies and I have no regrets,” a defiant Kessler told the council after its 5-1 vote, according to CNN affiliate WFMZ. He added he would be back “30 days from tonight.”

Soon afterward, Kessler posted a statement on his website saying that Mayor Mary Lou Hannon and two council members — Eric Boxer and Daniel Malloy — “are conspiring behind closed doors for full termination.” “They needed to suspend first to allow themselves time to look for or make up any reason or lie,” he said.

Kessler’s supporters say he made his statements on his own time and as a private citizen; however his video rants posted on YouTube are listed under the name “Chief Kessler,” not “Mark Kessler, private citizen.”

NYC: West Village hosts massive anti-hate crime rally

JoeMyGod reports that the NYPD has closed the streets around the LGBT Community Center in the West Village as a massive crowd prepares to step off and march in honor of murdered gay man, Mark Carson.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor were spotted at the front of the march.

Bryan Fischer: President Obama wants to take guns away from evangelical Christians

Ok, it’s officially the “Day of Nutty News” I’ve decided.

If the videos of the bigots from “Stand with Scouts Sunday” weren’t enough today, we get news that consistent asshat Bryan Fischer of the misleadingly named “American Family Association” (they don’t really represent ALL families – like LGBT families) has announced that President Obama wants to disarm Christian gun owners:

American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer is convinced that President Obama’s pledge to “keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people,” a remark he made while speaking in Mexico City, is actually a veiled attempt to lay the groundwork to forcibly “disarm people of the Christian faith.”

Fischer said that Obama is “setting up the stage to take guns away from evangelicals” and classify them as terrorists: “‘You believe in Jesus Christ?’ ‘Yes I certainly do sir.’ ‘Give me your gun, we’re coming into your house and taking your guns, you’re dangerous, you’re a threat you’re an extremist, you’re a terrorist threat, we can’t let you have a gun.’”

I think this is all a contest between who can make the most false accusation before sun down.

Gun advocates plan loaded rifle “March on Washington”

What could possibly go wrong?

Almost 900 people are RSVPed for a July 4th march on Washington, D.C. where protesters plan to carry loaded rifles. In D.C., openly carrying guns is against the law. But the organizer of the event, libertarian radio host Adam Kokesh, says the march is an act of “civil disobedience” that attempts to prove gun advocates’ point in the “SUBTLEST way possible.”

The event’s Facebook invitation describes the march as a nonviolent demonstration, “unless the government chooses to make it violent”:

This is an act of civil disobedience, not a permitted event. We will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny. We are marching to mark the high water mark of government & to turn the tide. This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent. Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington, & returning with the resolve that the politicians, bureaucrats, & enforcers of the federal government will not be welcome in the land of the free.

There’s a remote chance that there will be violence as there has been from government before, and I think it should be clear that if anyone involved in this event is approached respectfully by agents of the state, they will submit to arrest without resisting. We are truly saying in the SUBTLEST way possible that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.

Kentucky: 2 year old killed by 5 year old brother playing with “My First Rifle”

UPI is reporting that a two year-old Kentucky girl has been shot and killed by her five year-old brother, who was playing with a gun sold as “My First Rifle.”

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the Lexington Herald-Leader the family had not realized a shell was left inside the gun. The boy picked up the gun from where it was kept in the corner of the house and it accidentally fired when he began playing with it.

The siblings’ mother was home when the shot was fired. The toddler was rushed to Cumberland County Hospital but pronounced dead. “It’s a Crickett,” White said. “It’s a little rifle for a kid. The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun.”

Bipartisan deal emerges for background checks on gun sales

I know many folks were hoping for sweeping changes to gun control laws, but this may be as good as it gets this time.  And it would be a shame to have nothing addressed after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook.

West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania presented their proposal today, just a day before the Senate is slated to take up gun control issues.

From MSNBC:

Toomey, unlike several members in his party, said he didn’t believe expanding background checks was akin to gun control.

“I’ve got to tell you candidly, I don’t consider criminal background checks to be gun control,” the GOPer said at a press conference Wednesday explaining the deal. “I think it’s common sense. If you pass a criminal background check, you get to buy a gun, no problem.”

While the compromise doesn’t include universal background checks, which is being pushed for by President Obama and is  favored by 90% of Americans, it does expand background checks to cover gun shows and online sales of firearms. Failure to comply would be classified as a felony.

Gun sales between friends and acquaintances would be exempt.

I think these are the right two guys to bring this forward since Pennsylvania and West Virginia are serious “gun” states.  Plus, the two senators here are more moderate members of their parties.  I think if anyone is going to help get ANYTHING done on common sense gun policy, it will be these two guys.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already filed a cloture motion to move forward on a gun control bill Thursday.
