Anti-LGBT Army Secretary Nominee Withdraws From Consideration

Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green

Tennessee state Sen. Mark E. Green, President Trump’s second nominee for Secretary of the Army, has withdrawn his name from contention for the position following weeks of outrage and phone calls made in light of past anti-LGBT rhetoric.

Human Rights Campaign members alone made over 6,800 calls to the U.S. Senate expressing their concern for his past anti-LGBT comments.

Five Democratic Senators, including Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), had announced this week they could not vote in favor of his nomination.

Even veteran Republican Sen. John McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republican Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, had said that Green’s past comments about gays and lesbians and Muslims are “very concerning” and that Green would need to explain himself to the committee.

Additionally, it appears Secretary of Defense James Mattis had lost confidence in Green. When asked whether Mattis still supported Green’s nomination, the Pentagon declined to comment.

From The Advocate:

Green has said transgender people are an “evil” that must be “crushed” and compared them to terrorists; he told a Tea Party group that being transgender is a “disease.” As a right-wing state senator, he encouraged Tennessee officials to defy the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. He also sponsored an anti-transgender bill and opposed nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people. He was also caught crudely criticizing the integration of transgender people in the military, writing on Facebook that, “Mr. Obama supports transvestites in uniform but you cannot have a bible on your desk, saying it disrupts good order in the military.”

Had he been confirmed, Green would have replaced Eric Fanning as Secretary of the Army. Fanning was the first openly gay man to serve in the position.

Vincent Viola, a Wall Street billionaire who was Trump’s first Army Secretary nominee, removed himself from consideration in February saying he was unable to appropriately clear conflict-of-interest rules.

In a statement on Friday, Green cast himself as the victim:

“Tragically, my life of public service and my Christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked by a few on the other side of the aisle for political gain.

“While these false attacks have no bearing on the needs of the Army or my qualifications to serve, I believe it is critical to give the president the ability to move forward with his vision to restore our military to its rightful place in the world.”

Matt Baume “Debriefs” Trump’s First 100 Days For LGBTs

As President Trump attempts to spin his empty list of “accomplishments” during his first 100 days in the White House,  Matt Baume offered this list of actions Trump has moved on since taking office including:

• rescinding LGBT protections under federal contractors
• rescinded transgender protections for students
• ended data collection by the federal government on LGBTs so they could even know who, what and how many there are
• appointed a SCOTUS justice who seems set to rule against any LGBT rights
• and his cabinet is decidedly anti-LGBT

Quite a list from the guy who said he would be “better for the gays” than Hillary Clinton.

Texas Congressman Weeps While Begging God To Forgive America For Marriage Equality

Oh, lord.

Republican Congressman Randy Weber became a weepy, crying mess on Wednesday night as he begged God to forgive America for allowing gay couples to get married.

Speaking at the annual “Washington – A Man of Prayer” event in Washington, D.C., Weber repeatedly got all teary-eyed while begging God to forgive America for the sins of marriage equality and abortion.

“We have endeavored to try and kick your word out of public schools.

“Father, we have endeavored to take the Bible out of classrooms, the Ten Commandments off the walls. Oh, Lord, forgive us. Father, we think we’re so smart, we have replaced your word and your precepts with drug-sniffing dogs, with metal detectors, with uniformed police officers in our schools. Oh, Lord, forgive us.

“Father, we have trampled on your holy institution of holy matrimony and tried to rewrite what it is and we’ve called it an alternate lifestyle. Father, oh Father, please forgive us.

“Lord, we have gone to killing the most innocent amongst.

“Your servant Moses warned in Deuteronomy 19 for us to choose life so that we and all our descendants might live. Father, we’re killing our descendants and we’re calling it a choice. Oh, God in heaven, forgive us, please.”

The Incredible Hypocrisy Of Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley

Gov. Robert Bentley and alleged mistress Rebekah Mason

According to reports, anti-LGBT Republican Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is widely expected to resign due to four possible felony charges related to his unsuccessful attempts to hide his long-time affair with former aide Rebekah Mason.

The cheating itself is bad enough, but the man is also clearly an idiot.

It turns out his wife was able to follow practically the entire affair via text messages because his phone was synced with the iPad he gave his wife. The messages played out in real-time in front of her.

From TalkingPointsMemo:

Unbeknownst to the governor and Mason, the frequent romantic texts they exchanged were all visible to Dianne Bentley. The governor’s state-issued cell phone’s cloud was linked to his state-issued iPad, which he had gifted to his then-wife, allowing her to watch the rumored affair unfold in real time.

“I’m so in love with you,” Bentley wrote to Mason in one text, along with two heart-eye emojis. “We are pitiful.”

“Poor Robert. Poor Rebekah,” he added.

“Yes… Bless our hearts… And other parts,” Mason wrote back.

“Magnetic,” Bentley replied.

The device oversight was only one of Bentley’s errors.

In spring 2014, he mistakenly sent a text to his wife reading, “I love you Rebekah,” along with an emoji of a red rose.

This is the same man who, before SCOTUS’ Obergefell ruling in 2015, filed an amicus brief which stated marriage between two people of the same sex was “demeaning” to democracy.

Because he clearly has so much respect for the institution of marriage, huh?

Trump’s Army Secretary Pick Sponsors “License To Discriminate” Legislation

Mark Green

President Obama’s Army Secretary, Eric Fanning, was the first openly gay man to serve in that position.

President Trump, being everything anti-Obama, now logically picks for his Army Secretary Tennessee state Senator Mark Green – a man who is currently sponsoring anti-LGBT legislation in his state.

Because, of course.

From The Huffington Post:

Green is the sponsor of SB 127, a bill that would bar government entities from taking “discriminatory action against a business entity on the basis of the internal policies of the business entity.”

Tennessee does not currently have nondiscrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, although some municipalities do have stronger rules protecting LGBTQ government employees. Green’s bill, however, would bar local governments and public universities from looking at companies’ internal policies when doing business or giving out contracts ― because it would be considered discrimination against the business.

“You [wouldn’t be able to] have a provision in your contracting rule saying, ‘We’ll only contract with organizations that treat married same-sex couples equally. You couldn’t do that,” explained Chris Sanders, executive director of the Tennessee Equality Project. “Or you couldn’t say, ‘We’ll only subcontract with companies that have contraception as part of their health insurance.’ It’s not just LGBT [issues].”

Green’s bill has already passed the state Senate, and is under consideration in the state House.

Green is Trump’s second pick for Army Secretary, after Vincent Viola, a billionaire and owner of the Florida Panthers NHL team, pulled out of consideration saying he couldn’t separate himself from his businesses enough so as not to pose a conflict of interest.

NCAA “Reluctantly” Lifts Boycott Of Championship Games In North Carolina After Fake Repeal Of HB2

The NCAA Board of Governors has “reluctantly” voted that North Carolina’s fake repeal of anti-LGBT law HB2 is enough to lift the boycott of any championship games in the state.

Via press release:

In August of 2016, the NCAA Board of Governors instructed the relocation of NCAA championships scheduled in North Carolina during the 2016-17 academic year because of the cumulative impact HB2 had on local communities’ ability to ensure a safe, healthy, discrimination-free atmosphere for all those watching and participating in our events.

Last week, the elected officials of North Carolina enacted compromise legislation that repealed HB2 and replaced it with a new law, HB142, that addressed a number of the concerns that led to the relocation of the NCAA championships. As with most compromises, this new law is far from perfect.

The NCAA did not lobby for any specific change in the law. The Board of Governors, however, was hopeful that the state would fully repeal HB2 in order to allow the host communities to ensure a safe, healthy, discrimination-free atmosphere for the championship sites. While the new law meets the minimal NCAA requirements, the board remains concerned that some may perceive North Carolina’s moratorium against affording opportunities for communities to extend basic civil rights as a signal that discriminatory behavior is permitted and acceptable, which is inconsistent with the NCAA Bylaws.

[snip]

In the end, a majority on the NCAA Board of Governors reluctantly voted to allow consideration of championship bids in North Carolina by our committees that are presently meeting. The NCAA championships previously awarded to North Carolina for 2017-18 will remain in the state. The board, however, directs that any site awarded a championship event in North Carolina or elsewhere be required to submit additional documentation demonstrating how student-athletes and fans will be protected from discrimination.

It’s worth noting that for some unfathomable reason (other than LGBT animus), the newly passed HB142 blocks cities/townships/local municipalities from passing any protections for LGBTQ people until 2020. For what good reason is this clause included in the legislation?

And even after that period passes, local governments will still be blocked from guaranteeing trans people are able to safely use bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

How this isn’t seen as the definition of LGBTQ discrimination escapes me.

The Human Rights Campaign and Equality NC respond:

“The NCAA’s decision to backtrack on their vow to protect LGBTQ players, employees and fans is deeply disappointing and puts people at risk,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “After drawing a line in the sand and calling for repeal of HB2, the NCAA simply let North Carolina lawmakers off the hook.”

“It is disappointing to see the NCAA backpedal after it stood strong against the deeply discriminatory HB2,” said Equality NC Executive Director Chris Sgro. “HB142 continues the same discriminatory scheme put forward by HB2 and does little to protect the NCAA’s players, employees, and fans. The NCAA’s decision has put a seal of approval on state-sanctioned discrimination.”

North Carolina Governor Signs Fake Repeal Of Anti-Trans Law HB2

After rushing new legislation through both the state House and Senate of North Carolina, which was touted as a “repeal” of anti-LGBT law HB2,  Gov. Roy Cooper has signed HB142.

The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement which read, in part:

Today, HRC, Equality North Carolina, and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), strongly condemned North Carolina’s shameful new legislation that lawmakers and Governor Cooper touted as a “repeal” of their discriminatory HB2 law.

“After more than a year of inaction, today North Carolina lawmakers doubled-down on discrimination,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “This new law does not repeal HB2. Instead, it institutes a statewide prohibition on equality by banning non-discrimination protections across North Carolina and fuels the flames of anti-transgender hate. Each and every lawmaker who supported this bill has betrayed the LGBTQ community. HRC will explore every legal action to combat this dangerous legislation, and we urge all businesses, sports leagues and entertainers who have fought against HB2 to continue standing strong with the LGBTQ community attacked by this hateful law.”

The legislation passed today would effectively ban LGBTQ non-discrimination protections statewide through 2020 and permanently bar cities from passing laws that ensure transgender people can access facilities in accordance with their identity. ”

This was all done to meet a deadline imposed by the NCAA, which had told the state of North Carolina to either repeal HB2 or lose any championship games for the next five years.

No word yet on whether or not this fake repeal will actually satisfy the NCAA.

NCAA To North Carolina: Kill HB2 Or Lose Championship Games For Five Years

Yesterday, the NCAA reaffirmed it’s position against North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law, HB2.

With upcoming deadlines looming for the decisions on championship sites for the next five years, the NCAA’s message is clear – either change the hateful bathroom law or “no championship games for you!”

“Last year, the NCAA Board of Governors relocated NCAA championships scheduled in North Carolina because of the cumulative impact HB2 had on local communities’ ability to assure a safe, healthy, discrimination free atmosphere for all those watching and participating in our events. Absent any change in the law, our position remains the same regarding hosting current or future events in the state. As the state knows, next week our various sports committees will begin making championships site selections for 2018-2022 based upon bids received from across the country. Once the sites are selected by the committee, those decisions are final and an announcement of all sites will be made on April 18.”
