Extreme right-wing Christian group to protest Dallas Cowboys over signing Michael Sam

Anti-gay conservative activist Jack Burkman

Well, sadly, we all knew this was coming.

GOP lobbyist and conservative activist Jack Burkman says his extreme right-wing Christian group American Decency will protest this Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys game over the signing of out NFL-er Michael Sam:

Jack Burkman heads the group which claims to have 3.62 million members in 41 states. Burkman says, “We cannot just stand idly by as Christian values and morals are trampled. We will do whatever we can to preserve family values in this country.”

[snip]

Some callers to 105.3 The Fan made verbal tackles against Sam. One caller said, “I don’t want my kids looking up to me and say Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?” But other fans say with the Cowboy‎’s weak defense, they may need Michael Sam’s strengths. “If he can use the speed to get around the corner and get to the quarterback, hey, that’s all we need.”

You’ll recall that back in May, Burkman announced he would boycott any NFL team that signed Sam.

In February, he proposed a federal law banning gay athletes from the NFL.

Duck Dynasty personality Phil Robertson says he’s “as much of a homophobe as Jesus was”

Anti-gay Phil Robertson, of Duck Dynasty fame, has written a new book – UnPHILtered – to “clear the air” on several topics.

Of course, one of those being his now famous comments about gays in an GQ interview that saw him be suspended from his TV show.

In this interview with ABC, Robertson is asked if he thinks he’s a homophobe. His response: I’m as much of a homophobe as Jesus was.”

I somehow doubt that. Watch the interview below:

NOM’s graphic fail: Losing sight of children

Note the latest graphic fail by the ironically named National Organization for Marriage.

The anti-gay rights group put out this graphic today with the tag “Our laws should never lose sight of children.”  Because – we’re always thinking about the children, riiiiight?

Then, what parent would actually put a small object like a wedding ring in a baby’s hand?  Any parent will tell you the first thing a baby does with a small object is put the object in it’s mouth.  And then you know what happens.

So this graphic is a big ole fail for NOM, who clearly doesn’t keep “the best interests of children.”  So busy hating on the gays, they forgot common sense.

As LGBT activist and dad Jeremy Hooper of Good As You put it:

As a parent of an infant, my eyes are like laser beams in constant hunt of objects that might pose a choking hazard to my little peanut.

But while I know that anything small enough to pass through a toilet paper roll is a potential danger, apparently NOM is not concerned enough about infants’ growth and development to keep potential dangers out of the vulnerable baby’s hands.

This graphic is like a warning poster from a pediatrician’s office.

Pat Robertson: Boy having crushes on boys because he’s being “raised by a woman”

A viewer asks Pat Robertson’s help as her 13 year-old step-son has admitted to developing “crushes on boys.”

Oh, dear! What should she do???

From Right Wing Watch:

Repeating the myth that homosexuality is the result of a lack of parental bonding, Robertson said “his attraction is now toward other men because he’s raised by a woman.”

“I would get him male companions, I’d get him some man to help him, some mentor, someone who cares about young men,” Robertson advised. “He is being raised by a single woman and that is skewing his orientation.”

Russia: Anti-gay extremist sentenced to five years in prison

Anti-gay extremist Maxim Martsinkevich

A Russian anti-gay extremist who has been on the run from authorities for months has been sentenced to five years in prison.

From LGBTQ Nation:

Maxim Sergeyevich Martsinkevich was convicted of inciting and fomenting cases of extremism by posting videos on the “Vkontakte” (VK.com) social network that contained racial slurs and extremist opinions on Russia’s state of the union, reports Interfax. Videos containing anti-gay statements and abuse were not included in the prosecutor’s case against him, however.

Martsinkevich rose to international attention last year when his group began posting videos on VK.com and YouTube, documenting violent and homophobic harassment of men and gay youth the group claims were seeking to have sex with boys.

Martsinkevich attempted to escape prosecution by running to Cuba, but was arrested and extradited in January for breaking Cuban immigration laws.

Bryan Fischer: Gays should be disqualified from holding public office

Hate group leader Bryan Fischer says that all gay people should be disqualified (due to sexual deviancy) from ever serving in public office.

“My view of public service is that somebody who is engaged in sexually deviant behavior is not qualified to hold public office.

“That’s why if you get a conviction for rape, you can’t hold public office. You get a conviction for pedophilia, you can’t hold public office. You might even get run out of office on a prostitution charge because it’s sexually deviant behavior.

“Now lesbianism is sexually deviant behavior because it deviates from God’s plan and design for human sexually. So I believe that this is a person who, because she’s involved in sexually deviant behavior, should be, ought to be disqualified from public service.”

Utah: Facebook donates $10,000 to anti-gay Attorney General Sean Reyes

Sean Reyes

Facebook has a strong history of supporting LGBT equality.

So, it was a bit confounding when news came to light that the company donated $10,000 to Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes’ re-election campaign.

Remember, this is the man who vowed to ‘spend whatever it takes’ to prevent gay couples from marrying in his state.

And this is the company that says it “values the impact that every individual can have. We are dedicated to creating an environment where people can be their authentic selves and share their diverse backgrounds, experiences, perspectives and ideas.”

QSalt Lake reports:

When asked about the donation to the person who has arguably become the face of legal opposition to marriage equality in America, a Facebook spokesperson responded with:

“Facebook has a strong record on LGBT issues and that will not change, but we make decisions about which candidates to support based on the entire portfolio of issues important to our business, not just one. A contribution to a candidate does not mean that we agree with every policy or position that candidate takes. We made this donation for the same reason we’ve donated to Attorneys General on the opposite side of this issue – because they are committed to fostering innovation and an open Internet.”

Reyes recently appealed the 10th Circuit Court’s ruling against the Utah’s same-sex marriage ban directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Pennsylvania bakery refuses to make wedding cake for lesbian wedding

A Schuylkill County bakery is getting some unwanted attention after refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, Bethanny and Jennifer Petrich.

“I loved the work they did and it tasted great. It’s a hometown bakery. I wanted to support my hometown,” said Jennifer Petrich.

(Isn’t that great?  The local girl wanted to SUPPORT her local bakery…)

“My mom, who is planning our wedding, called and made the appointment for us. It was okay at that time and she was open and honest and said it’s for Bethany and Jennifer.”

Later, however, the bakery called back to say the owner had talked to Jesus for two weeks and seeing as the wedding was between two women, the bakery would not be able to fulfill the order.

(Umm, not so great.  The local bakery doesn’t want to SUPPORT her local LGBT community…)

Lorraine Fleming, the bakery’s owner, said “I’m not sorry for my decision and I feel strong. I know that I’m doing the right thing.”

Fleming went on to say that although there “is homosexuality in her own family” the decision was made based on her deeply held religious beliefs.  “I’m sorry for the damage that’s been done as far as hurt feelings.”

Jennifer said, “We asked her to make us a wedding cake and not marry us. I didn’t understand.”

In the United States, there are currently 29 states – including Pennsylvania – without comprehensive, sexual orientation-inclusive non-discrimination laws.  And so, it is perfectly legal for The Cake Pros to discriminate in this case.

Boooooo!

Hate group leader Tony Perkins – Tell gay customers they are funding “ex-gay” clinics to scare them away

Hate group leader Tony Perkins

Just when conservatives might be seeing the inevitable in terms of same-sex marriage, now the haters find they have to contend with non-discrimination laws requiring businesses to treat LGBT folks fairly. Of course, the anti-gay industry spins this as a “threat to religious freedom.”

Always have to be the “victims” I guess.

But hate group leader Tony Perkins has an idea that might “scare away” any potential gay customers – contribute the “gay dollars” to ex-gay therapy clinics.

Right Wing Watch reports:

On Monday’s “Washington Watch,” host Tony Perkins lamented how increasingly difficult it is for Christian business owners to actively discriminate against and refuse service to LGBT people or same-sex couples based on their “religious views on sexuality.”

Perkins said that business owners who fear challenges to their discriminatory practices from gay couples should prominently place signs in their businesses explaining their belief in “traditional marriage,” and emphasizing that any profits earned from LGBT customers will be donated to “ministries that actually help people who want to come out of the homosexual lifestyle.”

Listen to Perkin’s pitch his idea below:

Liars at Texas Eagle Forum: Massachusetts population is declining because of same-sex marriage

Cathie Adams speaks at the Texas Values Summit

During the Texas Values anti-gay press conference, Cathie Adams said that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is a reason for its population growth: “Texas is the fastest growing state in the nation and there is a reason for that, and part of that reason is traditional marriage.”

Transcript of Ms. Adam’s comments:

We do not accept the homosexual agenda, that is what we are talking about here.

If those who embrace that homosexual agenda want to move to a state that does embrace homosexual marriage, there is a state of Massachusetts that they could move to. But we are finding is that they’re not moving to Massachusetts, what is happening is that Massachusetts is declining in numbers, people are moving out of that state.

So why in the world would Texas, that is growing and the fastest growing, want to join Massachusetts, that is declining. People are moving away, they are voting with their feet, out of Massachusetts.

As is often the case with the anti-gay haters, Ms. Cathie is making up facts as she goes along. The truth is Massachusetts population has been increasing since marriage equality became the law of the state, and is still growing, not declining. See the chart below:
