Kentucky: Anti-LGBTQ Printer Wins At Supreme Court On Technicality

The Kentucky state Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a Lexington print shop owner who refused to make LGBTQ Pride t-shirts because of his religious beliefs. Back in 2012, Hands On Originals print shop declined to make t-shirts bearing a design that read, “Lexington Pride Festival.” The owner of the company, Blaine Adamson, told reporters after a hearing before the state Supreme Court he couldn’t produce the shirts because the message “goes against my conscience.” “Because of my Christian beliefs, I can’t promote that,” Adamson told a Human Rights Commission hearing officer at the time. “Specifically, it’s the Lexington Pride Festival, the name and that it’s advocating pride in being gay and being homosexual, and I can’t promote that message. It’s something that goes against my belief system.” But the city of Lexington’s fairness ordinance prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in issues relating to housing, employment, and public accommodation. So, the local Gay and Lesbian Services Organization filed a complaint with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission claiming Adamson unfairly discriminated in declining the t-shirt order. According to the Courier-Journal, the HRC ordered Hands On Originals to print the shirts and attend diversity training classes.

Adamson, represented by the virulently anti-LGBTQ legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, appealed his case and won at both the circuit court and state court of appeals. This past August, his case landed at the state Supreme Court which has now decided in Adamson’s favor – but on a technicality. The state high court dismissed the case ruling that the Lexington Gay and Lesbian Services Organization lacked standing to sue the t-shirt company because the GLSO wasn’t the party denied service by Hands On Originals. The individual who originally placed the order and was turned away would have been the correct party to file suit according to the high court’s ruling. “Without a proper complainant, no determination can be made as to whether the ordinance was violated,” Justice Laurance VanMeter of Lexington wrote for the court’s majority. “While this result is no doubt disappointing to many interested in this case and its potential outcome, the fact that the wrong party filed the complaint makes the discrimination analysis almost impossible to conduct, including issues related to freedom of expression and religion,” VanMeter wrote. And Justice David Buckingham, who wrote a concurring opinion, chastised the Lexington Human Rights League for trying to force Hands On Originals to “engage in expression with which it disagreed.” Buckingham wrote, “When expression is involved, whether a parade organizer, a newspaper or a t-shirt company, a publisher may discriminate on the basis of content, even if that content relates to a protected classification.” Raymond Sexton, executive director for the Human Rights Commission told the press he is reviewing the Supreme Court’s ruling and will discuss any possible further action at the next meeting of the commission. This past weekend the UK TV show Strictly Come Dancing put the spotlight on two male dancers partnering together in a routine. The reality competition series, a precursor to ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in the U.S., gave professional dancers Johannes Radebe and Graziano di Prima a solo spot during a production number showcasing Emeli Sande singing “Shine.” Radebe, who was eliminated last week with his celebrity partner Catherine Tyldesley, grew up in South Africa and is openly gay. In an interview with Hello! Magazine, he said, “I’ve never felt so liberated.” “For the first time, I feel accepted for who I am,” Radebe told the publication. “That says so much about the people of this country.” “To be able to dance with a friend I respect and adore is joyous,” he continued. “There’s bromance galore between us, but there were no male and female roles, just free movement. It was beautiful, classy and elegant.”

In advance of the performance, the 32-year-old dancer shared with The Sun that a same-sex dance would have never happened when he was dancing on the South African edition of Strictly. Growing up near Johannesburg, Radebe said he was bullied from an early age and was called names like “sissy boy” frequently. At the age of 17, he was attacked with a baseball bat by a boy at school who called him “f*gg*t.” That journey to now made Sunday’s performance that much more meaningful for him. “When I got to the UK it was beautiful – for the first time I felt liberated,” he explained. “It’s just people accepting you for who you are no matter what you do. So now I feel more confident and comfortable because of my surroundings.” Radebe posted photos of himself and di Prima with the caption, “Love knows no boundaries” with rainbow and heart emojis and tagged di Prima. Di Prima, who is heterosexual (he proposed to his girlfriend live on stage earlier this year), also celebrated the moment taking to Twitter writing, “REPRESENTATION always matters! Unforgettable moment, dancing with you @johannesradebe @bbcstrictly”

The response on social media to the same-sex pair was mixed ranging from euphoria (including praise from former champ Joe McFadden) to some naysayers:

Former Strictly professional dancer Robin Windsor scolded the negative comments asking people to “just enjoy the artistry.”

Watch the full performance below. Radebe and di Prima enter around the 1:00 mark.

Battery Acid Thrown In Milwaukee Man’s Face After Being Accused Of Being In US Illegally

Mahud Villalaz (screen capture)
From ABC7:

Milwaukee police have made an arrest after a man was attacked and burned with acid in what officials say is a hate crime.

Mahud Villalaz suffered second-degree burns to his face after he was confronted by a man he says accused him of being in the country illegally. Villalaz, a U.S. citizen and Latino, says the man approached him in front of a restaurant Friday night, told him he didn’t belong in the country and threw acid from a container on him.

Surveillance video shows Villalaz stumbling away from the suspect, who police say is white.

This “type of racial verbal attack and now physical attack is condoned in the highest level of government in our country,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told reporters Monday, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. “This anger towards people of other countries is being fed by our president — and by his followers. What we saw over the weekend is a manifestation of that anger.” “Everybody knows what’s happening,” he continued. “It’s because the president’s talking about it on a daily basis that people feel they have a license to go after Hispanic people.” The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Clifton A. Blackwell, 61, was arrested Saturday, hours after the Friday night confrontation that left Villalaz with second-degree burns on his face.

Blackwell’s mother told the Journal-Sentinal her son has been under the care of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Milwaukee for post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from earlier service in the Marine Corps.

That statement seems to justify Blackwell’s violence by calling him a veteran. How does being a veteran explain carrying a bottle of battery acid with you? And before people come after me, I come from a military family. My dad was a major in the Air Force serving in two wars. I have nothing against veterans, just racists.

Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Grease’ Costume Sells For $405,700 – More Than Double Auction Estimate

My hubby Michael and I spent much of Saturday watching the streaming video feed of the Olivia Newton-John memorabilia auction via Julien’s Auction House. As regular readers know, Michael has been Olivia’s publicist for 20 years 🙂 We’d never watched a celebrity auction before, and knowing Olivia’s career so intimately we were fascinated to see what items really drew fans in. Olivia’s famous black leather jacket and skin-tight pants from the finale of GREASE, “You’re the One That I Want,” went for $405,700 – more than double the estimate. The outfit, along with hundreds of other items from Newton-John’s illustrious career spanning six decades raised a total of $2.4 million. While the black outfit was the focus of much of the press in the runup to the auction, we were surprised by how much other items went for. A custom ‘Pink Ladies’ jacket monogrammed with the name “Sandy,” which was given to Oliva at the close of shooting GREASE sold for $50,000, twenty-five times the estimate.

Michael standing in front of just some of Olivia Newton-John’s gold and platinum records
And a poster for the film signed by the full cast of the movie musical initially predicted to raise $1,000, raised $64,000. Also – a pair of patchwork bell-bottom jeans worn by Newton-John during a performance on NBC’s “The Midnight Special” in the 1970s raised $50,000. The original handwritten lyrics of “Hopelessly Devoted To You” from GREASE, written by longtime collaborator John Farrar sold for $22,500. And the first car Olivia ever bought in the United States, a 1975 Volkswagen Super Beetle, was purchased for $55,000. After her first bout with cancer in the 1990s, she was asked to lend her name (and help raise funds for) the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne, which aims to support the mind as well as the body. All of the proceeds from the GREASE jacket and pants will go to the center, as well as a portion of all the other items sold on Saturday.

Liam Payne On Hugo Boss Shoot: ‘There Was A Lot Of Tequila For This Shoot’

But that was tame compared to what was to come. The ’Strip That Down’ singer clearly took his own advice for the shoot with Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell that includes photos of Maxwell topless laying between a clearly naked Payne’s legs. Payne told GQ Magazine UK that the session “got very raunchy very quickly,” adding that he “hadn’t been properly warned about the amount of nudity Mert [Alas] and Marcus [Piggot] do in their work.” The 26-year-old candidly shares in his GQ interview “there was a lot of tequila involved for this shoot.”

“It just ended up being a lot more naked than I thought it was – and for her as well,” he added. “She was also naked. And I was just, you know, ‘Don’t look!’ She was naked behind me and I was thinking, ‘Liam, don’t look whatever you do.’” “I mean it was just a room full of five or six people and a hell of a lot of tequila to get me to this level,” he told GQ. “I was standing there and all of a sudden it was, ‘Right, OK, take them off.’ I’m like, ‘Really? Take them off? Off, off? Like on-the-floor off? Oh, my God.'” Payne also posted this video clip from the shoot on his Instagram:

The singer says his mother wasn’t too keen on the shoot once he shared one of the more raunchy photos with Maxwell. “She took one look at it and gave me a clip round the ear,” said Payne. “All I was thinking was, ‘I better not tell her about the London buses!'” Hugo Boss announced the choice of Payne for the new underwear campaign earlier this year with this smoking hot shirtless pic.

In addition to the new ad campaign, look for Payne’s debut solo album, LP1, due out on December 6. (source: GQ Magazine UK)

Transcript: Former Ambassador Told To ‘Praise’ Trump To Save Her Job

Donald Trump
The House impeachment investigators have released the transcripts of two witnesses who have testified in the ongoing impeachment inquiry. One of the transcripts involving testimony from former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch indicates she was told to ‘praise’ Donald Trump publicly in order to save her job. From NBC News:

Marie Yovanovitch, the ousted U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, told House impeachment investigators last month that U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland told her she should tweet out support or praise for President Donald Trump if she wanted to save her job, according to a transcript of her testimony made public Monday.

The three House committees leading the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump released two transcripts of the behind-closed-doors interviews they have so far conducted as part of their investigation, as the probe moves to a more public phase.

Yovanovitch was interviewed by House investigators in October for more than nine hours and has emerged as a key figure in the investigation into Trump’s efforts to persuade Ukraine’s new government to commit publicly to investigate corruption and the president’s political opponents.

Viral Video: “The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had!’

YouTube personality Christian Hull (screen captures)
Have you ever made a purchase that made you so excited you didn’t know what to do with yourself? Comedian and YouTube personality Christian Hull, based in Melbourne, Australia, is clearly beside himself after buying a folding board for t-shirts online. “I have never been more entertained in my life with the most boring and mundane task of folding t-shirts,” announces Hull. “This is so fun!” squeals the comedian as he demonstrates his new discovery. “And then all you do is go ‘boosh, boosh, boosh….Oh, oh, oh look how neatly it’s folded!!!” He adds, “I can’t tell you – this has been the most fun I’ve ever had!” Hull’s over-the-top joy  – “One of the single greatest moments in my life!!!” – cannot be contained and it’s charming.

In two days, the clip has been viewed over 7 million times and been ‘Liked’ on Twitter over 644,000 times. Of course, savvy Big Bang Theory fans recalled the device being featured in a scene with Jim Parsons:

Readers, have you ever made a purchase that made you squeal with such delight? Sometimes, it’s the little things. Happy Monday, everyone!

White Supremacist Richard Spencer On Leaked Audio: ‘I Rule The F*cking World!’

White nationalist Richard Spencer

White nationalist Richard Spencer
Richard Spencer
Over the weekend, alt-right instigator Milo Yiannopolous posted an audio recording of ‘white nationalist’ Richard Spencer reacting to the death of 32-year-old Heather Meyer after the violent ‘Unite The Right’ hate rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina, in 2017. Spencer was an organizer of the event where one of his compatriots drove his car into a crowd of anti-nazi protesters killing Meyer. He made his way into the mainstream news by being ‘clean-cut’ and ‘well-dressed’ as opposed to appearing in his white hood. Spencer says, in response to Heyer being murdered in Charlottesville:

We are coming back here like a hundred fucking times. I am so mad. I am so mad at these fucking people. They don’t do this to fucking me. We’re going to ritualistically humiliate them. I am coming back here every fucking weekend if I have to. Like this is never over! I win! They fucking lose! That’s how the world fucking works.

Little fucking kikes. They get ruled by people like me. Little fucking octaroons. I rule the fucking world. Those pieces of shit get ruled by people like me. They look up and see a face like mine looking down at them. That’s how the fucking world works. We are going to destroy this fucking town.

The word octaroon, a hateful term for someone who is one-eighth black, is practically never used except in so-called ‘white nationalist’ circles. You’ll recall Donald Trump infamously defended people like Spencer declaring that there were “very fine people on both sides” at the rally. It’s interesting that Milo would leak the recording since it seemed he and Spencer were once friendly. With Milo’s financial woes hitting the news, perhaps he’s just trying to become relevant in some way…? Here’s the audio – get ready, folks, this is rough:

The YouTube post by Yiannopolous claims “the audio was recorded in Charlottesville at an ’emergency meeting’ Spencer assembled immediately after he learned of Heather Heyer’s death.” For a little more background on Spencer, here’s a deeper dive ABC News’ Nightline did in 2016. Featured in the report is a clip where Spencer led cheers for Donald Trump declaring, “Hail Trump!” as his followers threw Nazi salutes.
