Matt Lauer Getting Terrible Reviews For Lack Of Follow-Up During Presidential Forum

News outlets are howling at NBC News’ Matt Lauer after he allowed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s claim he never supported the Iraq war to go unchecked with no follow up questions at last night’s “Commander In Chief” Forum broadcast on NBC and MSNBC.

Meanwhile, Lauer spent almost 13 minutes of his time (and several follow-up questions) with Democrat Hillary Clinton on her email controversy which has been  investigated and found to be a non-starter by the FBI.

Reporters across the internet were live fact-checking Trump even as he repeated his often debunked version of history that he always opposed the war in Iraq.

As many now know, back in 2002 in an interview with Howard Stern, Trump was asked if he supported an invasion of Iraq and he responded, “Yeah, I guess so,” Trump responded. “I wish the first time it was done correctly.”

Trump’s statement last night via Politico:

“The main thing is: I have great judgment,” Trump said in response to a question as what he has done in his life that prepared him to send America’s men and women into harm’s way. “I heard Hillary Clinton say I was not against the war in Iraq. I was totally against the war in Iraq. You can look at Esquire magazine from 2004. You can look at before that. And I was against the war in Iraq, I said it’s going to totally destabilize the Middle East, which it has. It’s been a disastrous war. And perhaps almost as bad was the way Barack Obama got out. That was a disaster.”

NBC News eventually posted a fact-check online showing Trump lied during the forum after the fact.

Just a few responses from journalists:

Seth Meyers Takes “A Closer Look” At Trump’s Approach To African-American Voters

Seth Meyers takes “A Closer Look” at Donald Trump’s recent outreach to African-American and Latino voters.

Meyers notes that even though Trump has a “well documented history of stoking racial resentment and attracting the support of white nationalists,” the thinking must have been he could “overcome all that by going to a church in Detroit and awkwardly swaying back-and-forth like a dad who brought his kids to a Demi Lovato concert.”

Campaign Ad: “I Love War”

A new ad from the pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC, Priorities USA, pulls no punches in hitting Donald Trump over his views of war.

Once again using his own words, Trump’s pronouncements of “I love war” and “I know more about ISIS than the generals do,” are juxtaposed against images of war and destruction.

More from NBC News:

Like the Clinton campaign’s official ads, it takes a page from President Lyndon Johnson’s campaign against Barry Goldwater in 1964. Back then, the invocation of nuclear war to scare voters was considered so controversial that Johnson’s camp quickly pulled an ad featuring a mushroom cloud. But the ad, “Daisy,” generated so much discussion that it went on to be considered one of the most successful and famous political ads of all time.

Dallas Morning News Endorses Hillary Clinton For President

What is going on in Texas?

First a huge 75,000 person nation-wide poll came out via the Washington Post which showed Hillary Clinton running one point ahead of Donald Trump in the Lone Star state, and now the Dallas Morning News has endorsed Clinton for president.

She is the first Democrat to receive the paper’s blessing in over 75 years.

Along the way, the paper also calls Trump out for values that are “hostile to conservatism,” and a “dangerous lack of judgment.”

Here’s an excerpt from the Dallas Morning News:

There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton. We don’t come to this decision easily. This newspaper has not recommended a Democrat for the nation’s highest office since before World War II — if you’re counting, that’s more than 75 years and nearly 20 elections.

The party’s over-reliance on government and regulation to remedy the country’s ills is at odds with our belief in private-sector ingenuity and innovation. Our values are more about individual liberty, free markets and a strong national defense.

Trump’s values are hostile to conservatism. He plays on fear — exploiting base instincts of xenophobia, racism and misogyny — to bring out the worst in all of us, rather than the best. His serial shifts on fundamental issues reveal an astounding absence of preparedness. And his improvisational insults and midnight tweets exhibit a dangerous lack of judgment and impulse control.

After nearly four decades in the public spotlight, 25 of them on the national stage, Clinton is a known quantity. For all her warts, she is the candidate more likely to keep our nation safe, to protect American ideals and to work across the aisle to uphold the vital domestic institutions that rely on a competent, experienced president.

Hillary Clinton has spent years in the trenches doing the hard work needed to prepare herself to lead our nation. In this race, at this time, she deserves your vote.

RNC Strategist On Trump’s Lack Of Ground Game: State Offices Don’t Vote – People Do

Raw Story is reporting on an aspect of the presidential race that highlights yet another big difference between the Clinton and Trump campaigns – ground game:

Donald Trump still has bare-bones operations in many key states just two months ahead of November’s election, but the Republican Party’s chief strategist insists the candidate’s ground game is “phenomenal.” Sean Spicer, who also serves as the GOP’s communication director, appeared Wednesday morning on CNN’s “New Day,” where he offered some lame spin to deflect from Trump’s nearly invisible campaign operations.

“First of all, and I don’t mean to be facetious when I say this, but offices don’t vote — people do,” Spicer said. “What we learned from Obama in ’12, Obama looked really comprehensively at the Bush-Cheney ’04 model (and) figured out what they did well and improved upon that. What we did at the party is looked at what they did and improved upon that, and that’s what we focused on, which is voter contact, getting people trained, out into the field, making contact with voters, persuading them, registering, understanding more about them.”

From what I understand, these offices and local teams can track which registered voters have and have not voted in early voting, and can then target those registered Democrats who haven’t voted to get out to the polls.

Clearly two very different approaches. I will be fascinated to see how Election Day turns out and how much ground game comes into play.

New Music: Sia “The Greatest”

Fans of Aussie pop superstar Sia got a holiday weekend surprise when she dropped her latest single and video for “The Greatest.”

The haunting video pays tribute to the lives lost in the June 12 mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Led by frequent collaborator Maddie Ziegler (sporting rainbow tears on her cheeks), a group of still bodies lie on the floor of a locked cell. Music builds, bodies rise, and soon Ziegler and company break free of their confines.

“Don’t give up, I won’t give up. I’m free to be the greatest, I’m alive.”

The song is available now on all digital download sites including iTunes.
