LGBT Recap Of The 2019 Academy Awards

The 2019 Oscars saw lots of love for films featuring LGBTQ characters and stories, including Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite and A Star is Born.

Green Book, which chronicles the story of the friendship between gay jazz pianist Don Shirley and his white driver in 1960s America, took home Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.

Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her performance as Queen Anne in the lesbian dramedy,The Favourite.

The big winner at the Oscars was the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home four awards including Best Actor for Rami Malek, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

“I think to anyone struggling… we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself. The fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this,” said Malek in his acceptance speech.

A Star is Born, starring openly bisexual Lady Gaga, took home Best Original Song for “Shallow.”

Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed the song live at the awards ceremony, the clear highlight of the broadcast. Not only were the duo on point, the decision to have them come up from the audience and then continue the performance in one long steady cam shot was beautiful.

As a side note: Glenn Close’s work in The Wife is one of the most extraordinary, artful performances I’ve seen in years. I’m stunned Close did not take home the Oscar tonight. Stunned.

My opinion.

Deadline reports that the ratings for last night’s Oscars (sans host) were up 9% over last year’s awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Billy Porter Brings Next Level Red Carpet Fashion, Wins The Oscars Before They Even Begin

Before the Academy Awards even started, Pose star Billy Porter has won the red carpet.

Porter stopped traffic on the red carpet wearing a tear-away velvet tux-gown by Christian Sirano.

When Vogue is talking about you, you know you’ve arrived. Porter was trending on Twitter for well over an hour thanks to his fashion sense.

Porter has rocked the red carpet throughout this awards season.

At the Golden Globes, Porter donned a tailored suit and pink cape. He showed up at the American Film Institute Luncheon sporting a goldenrod gown paired with a matching blazer and head scarf.

“One of the things I’ve realized is that I’ve always had a gender-fluid sensibility with clothes, and it was so squashed by homophobia,” he shared with the New York Times earlier this year.

“Show business likes to masquerade as being inclusive and diverse,” said Porter, criticizing some fashion house’s traditionalism. “When we ask the houses for male and female clothes, we get the response, ‘We don’t think you should be wearing that.’”

Porter was also named Men’s Ambassador for New York Fashion Week in February.

“I find the younger talent to be much more open to experimentation and gender fluidity,” said the Tony Award winner to WWD. “I’m interested in connecting with designers who I can collaborate with.”

LA News Anchor’s Death Ruled Drug Overdose During Hookup Gone Bad

A Los Angeles news anchor, found dead on December 27, 2018, in a Days Inn motel, died of methamphetamine toxicity according to the coroner.

The Los Angeles Times reports that KTLA anchor Chris Burrous met with another man after connecting on the gay hook up app, Grindr.

The other man, whom the 43-year-old journalist had met on several occasions, called for medical attention when Burrous reportedly put at least two meth ‘rocks’ in his anus during the hookup. He soon passed out and became unresponsive.

Both the man and paramedics attempted CPR but to no avail. Burrous was declared dead at a hospital.

The coroner indicated in his report that hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease played a part in Burrous’ death.

According to Variety, the drug GHB was also found in the hotel room, but not in Burrous’ system. The other man was not charged with any crime.

After spending several years hosting Good Morning Sacramento, Burrous relocated to Los Angeles taking on weekend anchoring duties for the KTLA Morning News.

Burrous is survived by his wife and a nine-year-old daughter.

Dylan O’Brien Gets Matched With A Daddy In ‘Weird City’

The pilot episode offers two men, Stu (Teen Wolf's Dylan O’Brien) and Burt (Modern Family's Ed O’Neill), who are “accidentally” matched up by a dating service algorithm.

YouTube jumps into the streaming network race with its own new series, Weird City.

The new anthology series (being offered at no charge for now) is reminiscent of Netflix’s dystopian, sci-fi show, Black Mirror.

 The pilot episode offers two men, Stu (Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien) and Burt (Modern Family’s Ed O’Neill), who are “accidentally” matched up by a dating service algorithm.

The two straight men end up in an unlikely romance, but that’s all I’m gonna say.

Gallup: Trump Job Approval By State

The 17 states where Trump’s approval meets or exceeds 50% account for a combined total of 102 electoral votes.

In contrast, the states in which Trump has an approval rating below 40% account for 201 electoral votes.

Job approval was below 40% in 16 states, 50% or higher in 17 states

Highest approval rating in West Virginia (62%), Wyoming (61%)

Lowest job approval in Hawaii (26%), Vermont (28%)

• New York state prosecutors are reportedly prepping a new set of charges against Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, should the president decide to pardon him. Presidential pardons only help those convicted of federal – not state – crimes.

• R&B star R. Kelly has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Chicago, Illinois.

• Billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, was charged Friday with two counts of soliciting prostitution in a Florida massage parlor. Kraft, a huge Donald Trump supporter, says he’s innocent of all charges although police say there is video evidence of Kraft on two occasions.

• This bisexual teacher came out to help a suicidal student, and then his school fired him.

• I often get questions about how I like living in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I do love it. But, this surprised us this week:

@Netflix – Please Don’t Cancel ‘One Day At A Time!’

Please don't cancel my One Day at a Time, Netflix!

Netflix hasn’t committed to a 4th season of its terrific reboot of the 1975-1984 sitcom One Day at a Time, kids, so fire up your Netflix and watch because it’s terrific!

The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer scores are a whopping 100% fresh score for seasons two and three, and a 97% score on season one.

The series has put a spotlight on depression, sexism, homophobia (there’s an openly lesbian daughter) and even more – Rita Moreno stars as the fabulously sassy grandmother, Lydia.

Suspect Arrested In Salt Lake City Gay Bashing

A victim of a homophobic attack recorded his own assault in an 8-second video that’s gone viral.

A man caught on video sucker-punching a gay man in Salt Lake City last weekend has been arrested.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that 22-year-old Carlo Alazo was charged Friday by the Salt Lake County district attorney with three misdemeanors – one for threatening to use a weapon in a fight and two for assault.

An 8-second video that captured Alazo appearing to punch the victim, Sal Trejo, was posted to

Twitter and went viral.

The incident occurred this past weekend around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning in downtown Salt Lake City in front of a bar.

The brief video begins with Alazo asking Trejo if he was gay.

“Are you gay, though?” Alazo asks on the video.

Trejo responded, “Oh, yes, I am.”

“Oh, then you’re gay,” Alazo replied.

According to Trejo, he began to reply, “Yeah, but you called me a [faggot],” but gets sucker punched before he could finish the sentence.

“He just messed with the wrong queers,” Trejo told The Salt Lake Tribune. “We knew that we would be able to find him because we have the resources and we have the support of the great community here in Salt Lake City.”

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski, the city’s first openly gay major, reached out to Trejo shortly after the attack.

And State Sen. Derek Kitchen, Utah’s only openly gay legislator, shared the video on Twitter writing at the time, “It’s time for the UT Legislature to act on hate crimes legislation.”

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says he won’t be attaching hate crime enhancements because he believes it would be “nearly impossible for me to prove that intent” under Utah’s hate crime statute. Gill called the laws as written “unworkable.”

“I would have to show that the person involved in criminal behavior had the intent to deny a constitutionally protected right,” Gill added, such as free speech or religious expression, which doesn’t apply in this case. “It’s so burdensome, we don’t even go to it.”

Utah’s hate crime laws apparently have never been utilized successfully in court.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a state Senate committee passed a bill this week that would strengthen the existing hate crimes law.

Attitude Magazine gushed over Usher’s “profound debut,” and added that the track makes “a striking first impression.”

The self-taught pianist says he definitely plans to lean into LGBT visibility as an artist.

“The mainstream doesn’t have to be a monopoly for the status quo,” Usher told Attitude. “I want to be honest, funny and romantic without censoring myself. Love and queer lives deserve to be celebrated and portrayed in a positive light as much as any other.”
