Study: 28% Of Millennials Avoid Hugging HIV+ People

The results of a new study by pharmaceutical giant Merck and the Prevention Access Campaign finds many young people today know little about HIV. Survey findings revealed the 1,596 respondents – who either identified as Generation Z (18-22) or millennials (23-36) – are woefully uninformed about HIV and its transmission. From the study: • 41% of Gen Z respondents were either somewhat informed or not at all informed about HIV, compared to 23% of millennials • While 67% said they were most concerned about HIV compared to other STIs, 54% did not report using condoms or PrEP. •  28% of HIV-negative millennials said they have avoided hugging or interacting with HIV-positive people, even though the virus cannot be transmitted through casual contact • 76% of those living with HIV said they were hesitant to share their status for fear of being judged • 90% of those living with HIV said they avoided sharing their status for fear of losing friends or family Bruce Richman, executive director of the Prevention Access Campaign said in a statement, ”Despite scientific advances and decades of HIV advocacy and education, the findings highlight a disturbing trend: young adults overwhelmingly are not being informed effectively about the basics of HIV.”  “These findings are a call to action that the crisis in the United States is far from over,” added Richman. “It’s time to elevate a real conversation about HIV and sexual health among America’s young people, and roll out innovative and engaging initiatives to educate and fight HIV stigma.” As a result of the survey, Merck and Prevention Access Campaign have launched a new project called Owning HIV: Young Adults and the Fight Ahead aimed at educating young Americans about HIV and elevating the urgency around the issue.

Koala Rescued In Dramatic Viral Video Dies In Hospital

Last week, I shared the incredible video footage of a heroic woman saving a koala bear who was badly burned in an Australian brushfire. The viral video showed a local woman named Toni Doherty who ran to the koala’s rescue. She quickly took off her own shirt to protect the crying animal and then poured water over it to try and cool the burns. Sometimes, heroes don’t wear capes. They save the day dressed in a bra and sensible sandals. The injured koala was eventually taken to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for treatment. The country’s koala populations have been a major victim of the flames, with more than 350 of the marsupials feared killed in a major habitat.”

But today comes the sad news that Lewis’ injuries were more than his little body could bear and the hospital doctors were forced to help the koala pass away as peacefully as possible. The Koala Hospital of Port Macquarie shared on its Facebook page the sad news: “Today we made the decision to put Ellenborough Lewis to sleep. We placed him under general anesthesia this morning to assess his burns injuries and change the bandages. We recently posted that ‘burns injuries can get worse before they get better.’ In Ellenborough Lewis’s case, the burns did get worse and unfortunately would not have gotten better. The Koala Hospital’s number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made. We thank you for your ongoing support.”
Due to deforestation, and now the bushfires, the koala population has been massively impacted. TIME reports that over 1,000 koalas have perished in the raging fires over the past two months.

Break Out The Vitameatavegamin! – Will & Grace Announces ‘I Love Lucy’ Tribute

The cast of Will & Grace (photo: Dave Bjerke/NBC)
Break out the Vitameatavegamin! Will & Grace is planning a tribute episode to legendary 1950s sitcom, I Love Lucy. EW reports the homage, set to air in the spring, will offer three cast members – Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, and Sean Hayes – all taking on the role of the irrepressible redhead in iconic scenes from the beloved series. Messing will take on Lucy’s loopy “Vitameatavegamin” scene, while Hayes will attempt to keep up in the continually-accelerating conveyor belt in the chocolate factory. Mullally will, appropriately, have an alcohol-related scene as she stomps grapes at an Italian winery. In each of the excerpts, Eric McCormack will become play Ricky Ricardo as the other cast members rotate in the roles of Fred and Ethel Mertz.

In a nod to the original series’ comedic genius, the writers of Will & Grace will present the scenes scripted exactly as they were over 70 years ago. Plus, for a touch of authenticity, Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, will make a cameo appearance as the no-nonsense supervisor in the chocolate factory scene. “I know my parents would be over the moon to be honored in this way and by such similar talents who bring the same kind of joy to audiences as they did in I Love Lucy, said Arnaz in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be invited to the party and will do my best to honor the memory of Elvia Allman’s iconic performance.” Messing shared a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes photo of her done up as Lucille Ball writing, “I can’t wait until you see all the mind-blowing work done by Costumes, Sets & Set Dressing, Props et al when it airs next spring.”

Will & Grace airs Thursdays on NBC at 9:30 p.m. ET. (Source: EW)

Red Cross Asks FDA To Lower Blood Donation Restrictions For Gay/Bi Men

France has lifted its ban on blood donations by gay and/or bisexual men which has been in place since the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

A young man donates blood (image via Depositphotos) The American Red Cross has issued a statement urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the restrictions for gay and bisexual men to give blood. The Red Cross is asking the FDA to “consider reducing its deferral time for men who have sex with men (MSM) from twelve to three months.” Currently, gay and bisexual men are prohibited from donating blood if they have had sexual contact with another man within the past 12 months. That policy, begun in December 2015, replaced a decades-old regulation banning MSM and transgender women from donating blood at all. The Red Cross calls its suggested revision of current policy a “scientifically-based interim step” while further options are evaluated. The statement notes a 3-month policy would be consistent with other leading countries like Great Britain and Canada. The health organization also recommends “expanded use of new technologies to work toward the elimination of donor eligibility questions that would no longer be necessary.” Underscoring a commitment to “ensure that every blood recipient receives safe, lifesaving blood,” the statement declares that donating blood “should not be determined by methods that are based upon sexual orientation.” “We are committed to working toward achieving this goal,” adds the Red Cross. In a statement to NewNowNext, the FDA characterized the current 12-month ban as “a behavior-based policy, not one based upon sexual orientation.” The FDA’s statement goes on to note that the 2015 policy change was prompted, in part, by reviewing studies in blood donors which “showed that a history of male-to-male sexual contact was associated with a 62-fold increased risk for being HIV positive, whereas the increase in risk for a history of multiple sexual partners of the opposite sex in the last year was 2.3-fold.” The FDA added, “While acknowledging at the time that the change to a 12-month deferral was less than hoped for by some, the FDA considered this to be a first step in the process of evaluating and progressing its blood donor deferral policies for all donors.” I’ve been asked in the past what would happen if a gay man who is undetectable were to donate blood? I’m not a doctor, but some thoughts: The first thing that comes to mind is when you donate you’re asked if you’ve had sex with a man in the past 12 months. If you say yes, they won’t let you donate. If you fib, the blood will be tested and could be found to have HIV antibodies. You might be contacted by health officials to inquire if you were aware you’re positive. “Undetectable” is generally defined as less than 40 copies per ml, while under 200 copies per ml is considered “viral suppression.” According to the CDC, “a person with HIV who takes HIV medicine as prescribed and gets and stays virally suppressed or undetectable can stay healthy and has effectively no risk of sexually transmitting HIV to HIV-negative partners.” During sex, only small amounts of blood and semen are exchanged which is why U=U. But in blood transfusions, a lot of blood is being transferred. So I would imagine it’s possible some amount of virus – however tiny –  could be transferred. The issue I have with the FDA’s blood policy is sexually active HIV-negative gay men can’t donate, but a woman who might have unprotected sex with several partners can. It’s about the stigma attached that the current policy furthers. Plus, all donated blood is tested for a multitude of possible issues. So, I don’t see why a sexually active gay man who is HIV negative couldn’t be allowed to donate. For more information about the current blood donation policy in the U.S., check out this Q&A on the FDA’s official site. (source: Red Cross, NewNowNext)

From the 2020 Mitch Fit calendar
Some news items you might have missed: • InstaHunks: Yep, it’s calendar season and if you like gingers (umm, who doesn’t?), the new Mitch Fit calendar is for you! • Daily Beast: Robert De Niro declares he’s Team Buttigieg saying in a recent interview, “He’s got all the credentials — Rhodes Scholar, Afghanistan veteran — even though he’s young, and if he could get a chance it could be something special, I think.” • Men’s Health: Henry Cavill talks about what motivates him in the gym. “It’s not like I’m a golden god — I’m just proud of what I achieved. And then you can take your clothes off in front of your significant other, and they’re like, ‘Goddamn, you look great!’ Like, ‘Yes! I’m making other people happy.’” For the record, yes – it would make me happy for Henry to take his clothes off 🙂

• ABC News: Donald Trump, whose sons enjoy killing animals for enjoyment, signed into law today a bill that makes animal cruelty a felony. I totally support the new law, but the irony is inescapable. • Global Citizen: Italy has passed a law that will give garbage collection tax breaks to businesses that donate unsold to charities rather than throw it away. Currently, the country spends more than $13 billion USD on waste management. • New Music: Like the track itself, the new music video for “Oh Mama” from indie-pop group Milky Chance has a trippy, retro blues vibe. It’s pretty hard to avoid nodding in time with the song. From the band’s new release Mind The Moon.

Judge Rules Former White House Counsel Must Testify Before Congress

Don McGahn II (photo: Gage Skidmore/Flickr – CC License)
A federal judge ruled on Monday that former White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II must testify before House investigators per a congressional subpoena regarding Donald Trump’s efforts to obstruct the Mueller investigation. The White House has attempted to assert ‘absolute immunity’ regarding advisers to the president. From the New York Times:

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia rejected the Trump administration’s sweeping claim that top presidential advisers are absolutely immune from being compelled to talk about their official duties — meaning they do not even have to show up in response to a subpoena.

Mr. McGahn is unlikely to appear any time soon because it is virtually certain that the Justice Department will file an appeal and seek a stay of the judge’s ruling. He and his lawyer, William A. Burck, have taken the position that the fight is between Congress and the Trump administration, permitting administration lawyers to handle the case.

“Don McGahn will comply with Judge Jackson’s decision unless it is stayed pending appeal,” Mr. Burck said in an email. “The DOJ is handling this case, so you will need to ask them whether they intend to seek a stay.”

Should McGahn wait for all expected appeals from Team Trump to be played out, it’s very possible the issue won’t be worked out in time for his testimony to occur before the end of the ongoing impeachment inquiry. Judge Jackson rejected all 3 of DOJ’s arguments finding that “the claim that a President’s senior-level aides have absolute testimonial immunity is meritless.” I’ll be curious to see if this moves the needle on whether former National Security Adviser John Bolton will now agree to testify.

Gay Couple On Vacation Arrested For ‘Immoral Acts’ In Their Hotel Room

Imagine being arrested for having consensual sex in the privacy of your hotel room while on vacation. That’s the situation two Vietnamese tourists found themselves in during a trip to Malaysia. The New Straits Times reports Tang Van Duc, 22, and Lee Vu Linh, 29,  were arrested by the State Immigration Department in their hotel room in Penang for participating in “immoral acts” with an undercover officer on November 12. The couple pleaded guilty to the charges in court, and Judge Norhayati Mohd Yunus ordered each of them to pay a fine of about $240 (RM1000). They also faced the embarrassment of their photo being posted by local news media. The men had been visiting the country since October 18 on tourist visas.

I’ve reported on the grim situation for LGBTQ people in Malaysia many times in recent years. Malaysia provides no legal protections for LGBTQ individuals, and those arrested for same-sex encounters face severe penalties – up to 20 years in prison as well as fines and public whippings. Earlier this month, five men in Kuala Lumpur were sentenced to at least six months in prison and being whipped with a cane in public for “attempting to have gay sex.” In August 2018, police raided a gay bar in the same city saying the arrests were an attempt to “stop the spread of LGBTQ culture in society, according to Pink News. The next month two Malaysian women were caned for “attempting lesbian sex in a car.” Duc and Linh enjoy a better legal situation in their own country of Vietnam. Same-sex relations are legally permitted, gay/bisexual people are allowed to openly serve in the military, and a 2016 survey found rising support – up to 45% at the time – for marriage equality in Vietnam.

Bloomberg Officially Enters Dem Race, Bernie Officially Not Happy About It

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg announces official entry into 2020 presidential race
Billionaire Michael Bloomberg officially declared his entry into the Democratic presidential race on Sunday with an announcement video that highlights his self-made success contrasting his personal story with that of Donald Trump.

Bloomberg has said he will spend what it takes to win, and considering he’s worth $54 billion, he’s definitely got the resources. According to CNN, Bloomberg has already bought TV ad space to the tune of $37 million over the next two weeks. As a late entry, Bloomberg’s team says they won’t even try to compete in early states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. Instead, he’ll focus on Super Tuesday locations hoping to pick up the necessary delegates. But Bloomberg has a complicated past as a politician. He’s switched political parties from Democrat to Republican to Independent depending on which best suited his chances for winning elections; he recently apologized for a “stop-and-frisk” police policy during his tenure as NYC mayor; and his connections to Wall Street are unavoidable. Top tier contender Sen. Bernie Sanders made it clear he’s not happy about the news. “We do not believe that billionaires have the right to buy elections, and that is why we are going to overturn Citizens United, that is why multi-billionaires like Mr. Bloomberg are not going to get very far in this election, that is why we are going to end voter suppression in America,” Sanders told supporters at a town hall event on Sunday.

New Poll Indicates LGBTQ Voters Have A Double-Digit Favorite

A new poll conducted by YouGov/Out Magazine shows LGBTQ voters are definitely leaning towards a particular Democratic presidential candidate and it’s Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. I’ll say upfront any polling should be taken with a grain of salt, but this does provide a glimpse into what some folks may be thinking at this time. Announced as a ‘first of its kind’ survey of likely Democratic primary voters who identify as LGBTQ, the results show Warren easily outpaces her fellow Democrats garnering 31 percent of those polled. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) came in second with 18 percent, former Vice President Joe Biden pulled in 16 percent, and out South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg received 14 percent support. Everyone else in the field scored in the single-digit range. 31% – Elizabeth Warren 18% – Bernie Sanders 16% – Joe Biden 14% – Pete Buttigieg 6% – Kamala Harris 3% – Cory Booker 2% – Julián Castro 2% – Amy Klobuchar 2% – Andrew Yang 1% – Tulsi Gabbard 1% – Marianne Williamson All other candidates scored zero support. The data-crunchers at YouGov surmise Warren resonates so strongly with LGBTQ voters because LGBTQ voters tend to be more liberal than the average Democratic primary voter. According to Alissa Stollwerk, Vice President of YouGov Blue, “Seventy-seven percent of LGBTQ+ Democratic primary voters identified in our survey as very or somewhat liberal, approximately 20 percentage points higher than the percentage of Democratic primary voters overall who identify as very or somewhat liberal in our surveys.” For instance, respondents said they overwhelmingly prefer bold structural reforms (68%) versus incremental changes in policy (28%). Asked who could beat Donald Trump in the general election, 53 percent said Warren could win, 52 percent said Biden would trump Trump, 46 percent indicated Sanders could come out on top, 29 percent gave the nod to Buttigieg, and 26 percent said Harris could beat Trump. More from the survey: • 93% disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president; 89% strongly disapprove • 89% say Trump should be impeached and removed from office • 73% say the epidemic of violence against transgender women of color is the most critical issue facing the LGBTQ Community today; 60% said complete nondiscrimination protections; 59% indicated LGBTQ youth homelessness In a statement to Out, Stollwerk notes that such polling “is a snapshot of a group of people at a given time” and should be viewed as such. But the results do offer insight into “the viewpoints of these Democratic voters, what issues are important to them, and what they want to see in the next Democratic nominee for president. (source)
