News Round-Up: January 2, 2019

Some news items you might have missed:

• Ah, January. When everyone gets back to the gym. Now, I guess if I wanted to actually see Austin Wolf at the gym, I’d have to actually GO to the gym. There’s the snag…

• Out recording artist Hayley Kiyoko shares in a new interview that she was asked to “tone down” her sexuality early on in her career.

• A 19 year-old Indian man, who donated blood unaware he was HIV+, committed suicide after learning that his blood had transmitted the HIV virus to a pregnant woman.

• Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness broke with his boyfriend, Wilco Froners, in an Instagram post that attempted to be classy but he added a #cheatersneverprosper hashtag (he later deleted). In an Instagram Story, Jonathan later retreated a bit writing, “I should’ve sat with myself a bit longer before I posted my most recent post.”

• Vietnam has passed a law making it illegal to criticize the government online.

• A Massachusetts judge on Monday denied actor Kevin Spacey’s request to skip his upcoming arraignment on a felony charge he faces for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man in 2016.

• High profile make-up artist and drag queen Alexis Stone revealed a months-long ‘social experiment’ wherein he pretended to have botched plastic surgery wearing an extensive prosthetic mask. Hundreds trolled him online saying he’d ruined his face.

Then, on New Year’s Eve, he posted the video below where he stands looking at the camera for a few moments before tearing the mask off to reveal the experiment. The second video explains his reasons for the deception.

Some news items you might have missed:

• Happy, happy birthday to my awesome godson Josh (above), who I am certain hung the moon.

• Police in Colorado have arrested a woman for trashing a gay man’s apartment over his “gay behavior.” She faces charges of causing non-serious bodily injury, domestic violence, criminal mischief, and assault in the third degree, with possible bias crime enhancements.

• Outsports has named Gus Kenworthy’s slope-side kiss with boyfriend Matt Wilkas at the Olympics the “gay sports moment of 2018.”

• Thanks to the Trump Shutdown, as of midnight tonight, 42,000 Coast Guard members won’t see another paycheck until mid-January at the earliest. Other military branches are unaffected by the partial government shutdown but the Coast Guard falls under the Homeland Security Department.

• Out comedienne/TV host Ellen DeGeneres snagged a Top 10 spot (8th) on Gallup’s “Most Admired Women” poll this year. She’s the only LGBTQ person to appear on the list.

• Star Trek: Discovery star Wilson Cruz shows us how to turn a fierce 45-years-old. Just a simple wave of the hand, “45 and…”

• Donald Trump, who promised his infamous wall along the Mexican border would be paid for by Mexico, now says “The wall will pay for itself.”

• Even though the play opened to very good reviews, the Broadway revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song, starring out actor Michael Urie, has announced it will close January 6.

• The stock market moved into bear territory this week as the Dow fell another 417.11 points today, closing the week with a loss of 6.75% – its worst weekly decline since October 2008. #ThanksTrump

• In a year of ups and downs, the world searched for “good” more than ever before — according to Google Trends. From the epic headlines to the everyday moments, here’s to all the good that people discovered in 2018.

• San Diego Pride is so successful, the organization has announced that it will be donating more than $170,000 to 59 different LGBTQ-serving charities and organizations around the world.

• Ann Coulter offered her description of the Democratic Party on Laura Ingraham’s show Tuesday night: “The Muslims and the Jews and the various exotic sexual groups and the black church ladies with the college queers”

• Sexual abuse settlements could force the Boy Scouts of America into bankruptcy.

• A new poll by the Washington Post Fact Checker shows 70% of Americans don’t believe Trump’s lies.

• Talk about Man-Crush Monday – a reader sent me the pic above and woof! How could I not post it? Anyone know who the hottie is?

• An Australian student came out to his Catholic school during an assembly packed full of his classmates and teachers to thunderous applause.

• Daryll Rowe, who intentionally spread HIV to other men through Grindr hookups, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 12 years to be served.

• Model Rain Dove, whose birth certificate is marked female but now identifies at non-binary, was maced in a ladies room by a mother who decided Rain didn’t belong in the bathroom.

• Jury selection has begun in the trial of Neo-Nazi James Alex Fields Jr. who brutally ran down counter-protesters at the Neo-nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12, 2017, killing Heather Heyer and injuring several more.

• RuPaul and VH1 have teamed up with the New York Gay Men’s Chorus to create a holiday anthem like no other in advance of the upcoming RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 4 premiering December 14 on VH1.

Some news items you might have missed:

• Woofy ‘Bear-Naked Chef,’ Adrian de Berardinis (above), has scored a super-cool gig for the next month traveling and cooking for former First Lady Michelle Obama as she travels around the country on her book tour.

• An alleged hookup in Australia went horribly wrong as an American man seems to have jumped from his 3rd floor balcony in the middle of the night impaling himself on a poolside table leg.

• Police are investigating threatening calls made to two Boston area gay bars. The threats included gun violence.

• Over 50 men have filed complaints against a gay pop star in Turkey for allegedly hooking up with them, then trying to blackmail them for money to keep their sexuality hidden.

• The point of a new alt-right video game titled Angry Goy II is to target and slaughter minority groups like LGBTQ people in a Pulse Nightclub-like setting. The creator of the game refers to gay men as “mongrels” and “degenerates” that should be destroyed by using “guns, knives, pepper spray, and more.” He sounds nice.

• Check out the latest from electronic duo Phantoms (aka Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola), alongside actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens, in their new single, “Lay With Me.”

The music video is inspired by the history of friendship between Phantoms and Vanessa, giving a wink to the TV/Film phenomenon, High School Musical.

Speaking of musicals, Hudgens is set to play the bisexual role of “Maureen” in the upcoming RENT Live! scheduled to air January 27.

News Round-Up: November 12, 2018

Some news items you might have missed:

• No hunky pic to start this news round-up as I want to make sure we all stop and thank our military veterans for their incredible service this Veteran’s Day. I come from a military family (my dad was a Major in the Air Force during WWII and the Korean War) and have always been so proud of his service.

• The president of Poland told a reporter recently that he would consider enacting a Russian-style ‘gay propaganda’ law which would ban any materials that presented the LGBTQ community in a positive light.

• A gay man from the UK, Duarte Xavier, has been found guilty of tricking straight men into having sex with him. He’s been sentenced to 15 years in jail for his shenanigans.

• David Burtka, also known as Neil Patrick Harris’ husband, will have a major guest-star role in episode 3 of the web series West 40s.

• Mark Penn, a longtime adviser to Hillary Clinton, says the former Secretary of State will mount a 3rd run for the White House in 2020. While many say it’s time for her to exit the political arena, I’d vote for her again in a heartbeat.

• A 22-year-old California man, Samuel Woodward, has pleaded not guilty in the stabbing death of  gay University of Pennsylvania student, Blaze Bernstein.

• Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth regarding Sarah Brightman’s pop-opera recordings. Some have been fun and somewhat experimental, while others can feel she’s using a small sliver of her voice.

I did love her duet, “Time To Say Goodbye,” with Andrea Bocelli in 1997.

Since I recently wrote about Bocelli’s new album, I’m of a mind to include Brightman as well.

Her newest album, HYMN, has lovely duet with French tenor Vincent Niclo, who’s quite easy on the eyes and ears, and very much worth the listening.

I should also mention my husband worked on Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and knows Sarah. He only has wonderful things to say about her. Check out “Sogni” below.

• The 2019 Red Hot American Boys Calendar is out! Photographer Thomas Knights says he created the project because growing up he had no red-headed, strong male role models. He says “ginger guys were portrayed in TV and film as ugly and weak.” Well, he’s remedied that.

The project raises money for Athlete Ally, an organization committed to equal access to sports participation regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

• Marc Sophos, who created the OutCasting public radio & podcast programs, will be honored at the AARP Purpose Prize Awards in December. OutCasting gives LGBTQ teens a space to speak freely and hear about topics of interest specific to their world.

Congratulations and thanks to Marc for his commitment to creating safe airways for LGBTQ youth!

• Donald Trump acknowledged today that Republicans could very well lose the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. He says,”I’ll figure it out.”

• An Iowa library has received hundred of books and thousands of dollars after a hater checked out LGBT-themed books and publicly burned them.

• Gay billionaire Peter Thiel says he’ll continue to support Donald Trump in 2020, and explains that Trump’s lies are just “exaggerations of the truth.” Uh-huh, right.

• New from Randy Report favorite Clean Bandit, “Baby” features Marina and the oh-so-sexy Luis Fonsi in this Cuban-influenced dance floor-filler complete with same-sex storyline of lost love. The new single is the latest from Clean Bandit’s new album, What Is Love?

• Big congrats to my buddies, The Chippendales, for their big win this weekend as The Best of Las Vegas’ “Best Male Revue” and “Best Bachelorette Party.” If you’ve visited me in Vegas, you’ve probably gone to Chippendales with me at least once 🙂 #GoodTimes

• Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian met and exchanged gifts with the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni. You may recall Museveni signed into law the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Act which provides for life in prison in Uganda for being gay.

• If you watched the Donald Trump 60 Minutes interview last night, you saw this painting actually hangs in the White House. By artist Andy Thomas, the image portrays a gathering of Republican presidents in one place. #goodgod

• The New York Police Department announced Monday that it has enough evidence to charge nine members of the right-wing group Proud Boys and three protesters with various counts of rioting, assault and attempted assault that took place last Friday.

• Donald Trump has now nominated openly gay Patrick Bumatay to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This would bring Trump’s gay judicial nominees to a total of two.

• Regular readers of The Randy Report know I’m a huuuuge fan of Coldplay. And now there’s a new documentary film headed our way titled, A Head Full of Dreams.

• Tony Award winner Billy Porter, Emmy/Golden Globe-winner Mary-Louise Parker, and Emmy-winner Michael Emerson will head up a benefit reading of The Laramie Project on Monday, September 24, in NYC in honor of the 20th anniversary of the play that explored the murder of Matthew Shepard.

• Earlier this week, I reported that DC comics had launched a more “mature” version of Batman which included ‘full-frontal’ bat-nudity. Well, DC has now reversed course on that decision saying there will be no more private bat-junk on display in future issues.

• A lesbian couple was verbally attacked while staying the Clifton Mount Hotel by other guests. Their complaints to management resulted in the homophobic owner telling them, “Your not fit enough to stay in a hotel people like you should be put in a cage with the rest of the wild animals.” #HomophobiaLives

• A California stripper is facing serious jail time after stabbing his 50-year-old roommate. Geoffrey Tracy claims he was “creeped out” by the roommate “making moves on him.” Mind you, the muscle-bound Tracy was in NYC to dance at a strip club, so…
