Dolce & Gabbana Backtrack On LGBT Family Criticism

Fashion designers backtracked today on their recent comments in the Italian magazine Panorama, where they were critical of same-sex couples raising children.

The two designers were together romantically for 23 years and broke up in 2005. Their comments included their opinion that children born through IVF are “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”

“I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life,” Dolce added. “Life has a natural course, some things cannot be changed. One is the family.”

The comment drew sharp criticism from major celebs around the world including Ricky Martin, Elton John and Martina Navratilova.

On Sunday, Gabbana issued a statement saying “it was never our intention to judge other people’s choices. We do believe in freedom and love.”

Dolce said his comments about family were based on his personal childhood growing up in a traditional Sicilian family “made up of a mother, a father and children. I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I’ve known.”

Dolce added that his personal views were not a judgement of “other people’s choices.”

Elton John Calls For Boycott Of Dolce & Gabbana Over Anti-Same-Sex Family Comments

Elton John has called for a boycott of fashion brand Dolce and Gabbana after he said the designers labelled children born through IVF “synthetic”.

The singer and songwriter, 67, who has two children with his husband, David Furnish, angrily rebuked the Italian designers for criticising same-sex families and the use of fertility treatment.

Business partners Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who were once a couple, have previously voiced their rejection of same-sex marriage, but in an interview with an Italian magazine this weekend they extended their objection to include same-sex families.

Quote of the Day: Elton John Condemns Homophobia During Concert In Russia

Music legend Elton John shared this statement with his audience in St. Petersburg, Russia, this week:

“I’m not big on technology, but I love my iPad! They’re amazing, aren’t they? The way they can connect us to the things and people we love…

How dignified that St. Petersburg should erect a memorial to Steve Jobs, the remarkable founder of Apple.

But last week it was labeled ‘homosexual propaganda’ and taken down!

Can this be true? Steve’s memory is re-written because his successor at Apple, Tim Cook, is gay?! Does that also make iPads gay propaganda?! Is Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music ‘sexually perverting’?!

As a gay man, I’ve always felt so welcome here in Russia. Stories of Russian fans – men and women who fell in love dancing to ’Nikita’ or their kids who sing along to ‘Circle of Life’ – mean the world to me.

If I’m not honest about who I am, I couldn’t write this music. It’s not gay propaganda. It’s how I express life. If we start punishing people for that, the world will lose its humanity.”

Elton John believes Jesus Christ would support same-sex marriage

Elton John says that he believes Jesus Christ would support same-sex marriage if he were around today:

“The church hierarchy, the traditionalists, might be up in arms about it but times have changed. If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this [gay marriage] could not happen.

“He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together, and that is what the church should be about.”

In the same interview, John says that he hopes to speak to Russian leader Vladimir Putin about the LGBT community this fall when he travels there.

I’m sure that will fix everything…

Tom Hardy on playing Elton John in biopic: “I can’t hold a tune to save my life”

Tom Hardy with Sir Elton John

I recently reported here that Tom Hardy was cast in the upcoming bio-pic of Elton John’s life.

And yes – Tom is cast as Elton.  Hardly type-casting, but who cares?

Tom recently revealed in an interview that singing isn’t his strongest suit. When asked if he’d be doing the singing he said:

“Yeah, I hope so. Otherwise I’ll have probably failed, right? But that’s terrifying me. I can’t hold a tune to save my life.”

I have no worries.  Tom is a formidable and creative actor, no matter what he does.

Plus, I can always turn down the volume and just watch.

That face.  Sigh…

Music: Elton John & Bright Light Bright Light “I Wish We Were Leaving”

“I Wish We Were Leaving” is the title track of Bright Light Bright Light’s (aka Rod Thomas) new EP out on April 7 (as well as a track from his forthcoming sophomore record Life Is Easy, due out in July) — and Thomas shares vocal duties with Sir Elton John. The duet happened after Elton John reached out to Rod Thomas to praise BLBL’s debut album, Make Me Believe In Hope. “From then I kept hearing his voice on the track,” Thomas tells The Guardian. “In time I played him ‘I Wish We Were Leaving’ and he added his vocals. Although it wasn’t written as a duet, I love that his voice taking lead in the second verse is a reminder that every relationship has two sides and two voices.”

Russia: Elton John dedicates concert to memory of murdered gay man

Tonight in Russia, Elton John took to the concert stage to share his music and his sentiments on the anti-gay legislation currently demonizing gays and lesbians there.

“You took me to your hearts all these years ago and you’ve always welcomed me with warmth and open arms any time I’ve visited. You have always embraced me and you have never judged me. So I am deeply saddened and shocked over the current legislation that is now in place against the LGBT community here in Russia. In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating. People have demanded that because of this legislation, I must not come here to Russia. But many, many more people asked me to come and I listened to them. I love coming here.

“I want to show them and the world that I care and that I don’t believe in isolating people. Music is a very powerful thing. It brings people together irrespective of their age, their race, their sexuality, or their religion. It does not discriminate. Look around you tonight. You see men, women, young and old, gay and straight. Thousands of Russian people enjoying the music. We’re all here together in harmony and harmony is what makes a happy family and a strong society.

“The spirit we share tonight is what builds a future of equality, love and compassion for my children and for your children. Please don’t leave it behind when you leave tonight. Each and every one of you please, keep this spirit in your life and in your heart. I wish you love and peace and health and happiness. And this show is dedicated to the memory of Vladislav Tornovoi.”

Earlier this year, 23 year-old Vladislav Tornovoi was murdered in Volgograd after coming out to drinking companions. His companions mutilated his genitals with a beer bottle and then set his body on fire.

Tom Hardy as Elton John in bio pic?

Tom Hardy (L), Elton John (R)

Hard to picture this one.  No knock on Sir Elton, but Mr. Hardy is pretty knock down, drag out handsome.  Just saying….

 Variety has the details:

Tom Hardy will star as Elton John in Rocket Pictures’ “Rocketman” and Focus Features has come aboard to give the film a “major” U.S. release.

Hardy broke out last year as the villain in “The Dark Knight Rises.” He will next be seen in Steve Knight’s “Locke” and in the reboot of the “Mad Max” franchise for Warner Bros. and George Miller.

“Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material,” said Schlessel. “We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton. This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event.”
