Receiving Intel Reports GOP Senator Sold Stocks A Week Before Market Tanked

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC)
After assuring the public about the government’s coronavirus preparedness, Senate Intelligence Committee chair Richard Burr, in one day, sold off up to $1.6 million in stock. A week later, the market began its fall. ProPublica reports “Burr sold off a significant percentage of his stocks, unloading between $582,029 and $1.56 million of his holdings on February 13 in 29 separate transactions.”

As the head of the intelligence committee, Burr, a North Carolina Republican, has access to the government’s most highly classified information about threats to America’s security. His committee was receiving daily coronavirus briefings around this time, according to a Reuters story.

A week after Burr’s sales, the stock market began a sharp decline and has lost about 30% since.

His committee was receiving daily briefings. Additionally, NPR is reporting today that the North Carolina senator “warned a small group of well-connected constituents three weeks ago to prepare for dire economic and societal effects of the coronavirus, according to a secret recording obtained by NPR.” The remarks from Burr were more dire than any he had delivered in more public forums. According to the NPR report, Burr told attendees of the luncheon held at the Capitol Hill Club: “There’s one thing that I can tell you about this: It is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history … It is probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic.”

Funny: Michael Henry Goes After ‘Masc4Masc’ Dating Trope

L-R Michael Henry, Adrian Anchondo, Lyle Colby Mackston
YouTuber and queer culture guru Michael Henry goes after the “masc 4 masc” dynamic on dating apps in his latest video by proudly declaring he’s “fem4fem.” Hanging out with his friends on the bleachers – as gay men are inclined to do – Henry snatches Adrian Anchondo’s phone out of his hand when he hears the familiar sound of a Scruff alert. Reading Anchondo’s profile he sees, “No Fems no flakes. If you don’t work out than we won’t work out.” Lyle Colby Mackston asks “who’s that?” upon seeing the username “Masc4Masc4Now.” “That’s me,” replies Anchondo. In unison, Henry and Mackston: “You?” “I just like guys’ guys. You know, guys that work out and go to the gym like me,” says Anchondo. “It’s just a preference.” Related: Michael Henry Challenges “Masc/Fem” Gay Couple Stereotypes Without pause, Henry announces, “Well, I’m ‘fem4fem.’” As Anchondo laughs, Henry and Mackston launch into a dialogue about the kind of men THEY prefer. “You don’t have to be sexually attracted to a fem guy, but to explicitly say ‘no fems’ and ‘masc4masc only’ in your profile is kind of a douche move,” says Mackston before adding, “I love a fem top.” Henry chimes in, “I will only bottom for a bottom.” After listing several “masc” tropes like guys who wear “basic black tank tops and ball caps,” or deepen their voices, Henry shares his preference for “fem” guys comes from feeling he can be his authentic self with them. In true Michael Henry form, the short video not only exposes but explores yet another stigma the LGBTQ community inflicts upon itself. Study: Having Older Brother Increases Odds Of Being Gay

Me with my older brother Gary
A new study shows having an older brother can increase the odds among men of being gay. German and Canadian researchers compiled data from ten different studies on sexual orientation focusing on families with two sons giving them a dataset of 5,390 gay and straight men. Crunching the numbers they found males with an older brother had a 38 percent higher likelihood of being gay than men who don’t have older male siblings. The study was published Wednesday in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B journal. Additionally, the data indicated the more older brothers a man had, the greater the odds he would be gay. The New York Post reports the study also found “a correlation between mothers giving birth to homosexual males and having more children, as compared to moms of straight males having fewer children.” In their paper, the researchers wrote, “[Mothers] of homosexual males produce more offspring than the mothers of heterosexual males.” Professor David Spiegelhalter, of the University of Cambridge, told the Daily Mail, “The fascinating study estimates that having an older brother increases the odds of being gay by 38 percent, supporting the idea that a mother’s immune response to having a male child influences subsequent boys.” The study’s authors hypothesize that immune systems of mothers who give birth to a male baby react to a specific protein that has been shown to be important for brain development in male fetuses. The antibodies developed in reaction to that protein impact the brain development of future male children. The researchers noted that no correlation was found between the birth order for women and sexuality. (source: NY Post)

Amazon Warehouse Worker Tests Positive For Coronavirus

An Amazon warehouse worker in Queens, New York, has tested positive for the Coronavirus rattling many of the employees who are already concerned for their health as they work in close proximity to others during the health crisis. Via The Atlantic:

Workers at an Amazon warehouse in Queens, New York, received a text Wednesday evening that they long feared might come: “We’re writing to let you know that a positive case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) was found at our facility today.”

This is the realization of a major threat to Amazon’s operations. Millions of people across the nation are cloistered inside their homes, many of them relying on the company to provide basic goods.

Amazon is already struggling to meet demand, and some employees feel they’re being unfairly endangered by working in warehouses filled with other workers. It’s unclear how deliveries could continue if the workers who sort, pack, and ship Americans’ goods start getting sick in droves.

Always much, much fun to catch up with, I can affirm she’s still ‘saving the best for last.’ • PrideSource: Devon Robinson was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the spring 2019 shooting deaths of Alunte Davis, Timothy Blancher and Paris Cameron as well as assault with intent to murder two others. Prosecutors say Robinson’s actions were an attempt to cover up having taken part in an orgy with the trio. • Instinct Magazine: Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), the most conservative Democrat in the House, lost his primary race last night to progressive challenger Marie Newman, and LGBTQ folks are cheering. Lipinski has repeatedly voted against LGTBQ rights and protections. Biden Sweeps 3 More States, Sanders ‘Assessing’ His Campaign

L-R Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders
After losing all three Democratic primaries Tuesday night by double-digits, Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) campaign manager on Wednesday said that the senator “is going to be having conversations with his supporters to assess his campaign,” according to The Hill. Noting that “the next primary contest is three weeks away,” Sanders’s campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, said in a statement that Sanders “is focused on the government response to the coronavirus outbreak and ensuring that we take care of working people and the most vulnerable.” This follows a brutal night for Sanders where he lost across the board to former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden won Florida’s primary 62 percent to Sanders’ 23 percent, per Buzzfeed News. In Illinois, it was Biden 59 percent to Sanders’ 36 percent, and in Arizona, the former vice president won 44 percent versus 32 percent for Sanders. Biden spoke after the three contests were called and he addressed Sanders’ supporters directly:

“Senator Sanders and I may disagree on tactics, but we share a common vision for the need to provide affordable health care for all Americans, reduce income inequity that has risen so drastically, to tackling the existential threat of our time, climate change.

“Sen. Sanders and his supporters have brought a remarkable passion and tenacity to all of these issues. Together, they have shifted the fundamental conversation in this country. So let me say, especially to the young voters who have been inspired by Senator Sanders: I hear you. I know what’s at stake. I know what we have to do.”

Biden began his delegate lead in the race by coming out on top in 10 of 14 contests on Super Tuesday. Then on March 10, Biden won five of six contests including Washington state which was considered a safe haven for Sanders. Political experts say Biden will have a nearly insurmountable lead in delegates by the time all of the votes are counted from this week’s primaries. Biden currently has around 1,180 delegates, while Sanders has just about 884 delegates. You can check the count as more delegates are allocated at RealClearPolitics. Candidates must garner at least 1,991 to officially clinch the nomination. Forty percent of delegates remain to be allocated. Ohio, scheduled to vote last night, postponed its primary at the last minute due to coronavirus concerns. Additionally, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, and Puerto Rico have also delayed their primaries.

Gallup: Trump Approval Rating Drops Amid Mixed Coronavirus Messaging

Donald Trump (image public domain/White House)
Gallup Polling reports Donald Trump’s approval rating, which had risen in the aftermath of his impeachment acquittal, has dipped 5 points to 44 percent as he and his administration have sent conflicting messages about the severity of the COVID-19 threat.

The latest reading is from Gallup’s March 2-13 poll, which was conducted as the novel coronavirus spread throughout the U.S., eventually leading to international travel restrictions, the cancellation of major U.S. events and widespread school closures.

The magnitude of the COVID-19 crisis in the U.S. quickly evolved over the poll’s field period, and Americans’ (particularly Democrats’ and independents’) concern about it increased sharply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded historic declines in the past two weeks.

Eurovision Song Contest 2020 Cancelled

The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest have announced this year’s edition has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 threat. In a post to Instagram, the statement read, in part:

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam.

Over the past few weeks we have explored many alternative options to allow the Eurovision Song Contest to go ahead.

However, the uncertainty created by the spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe – and the restrictions put in place by the governments of the participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities – means the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has taken the difficult decision that it is impossible to continue with the live event as planned.

We are very proud that the Eurovision Song Contest has united audiences every year, without interruption, for the past 64 years and we, like the millions of fans around the world, are extremely saddened that it cannot take place in May.

This is the first time since the song contest began in 1956 the event been canceled. From ABBA’s win in 1974 to transgender singer Dana International of Israel in 1998 to Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst’s victory in 2014, the over-the-top performances and often queer-centric sensibility of the competition has made the annual event a highly-anticipated international television spectacle.

Washington Post: How Fox News Flip-Flopped On Coronavirus Threat

The Washington Post illustrates how Fox News hosts initially denounced any kind of serious measures to be taken against the coronavirus as they stood lockstep with Donald Trump’s tamping down of the threat.

For weeks, some of Fox News’s most popular hosts downplayed the threat of the coronavirus, characterizing it as a conspiracy by media organizations and Democrats to undermine President Trump.

Fox News personalities such as Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham accused the news media of whipping up “mass hysteria” and being “panic pushers.” Fox Business host Trish Regan called the alleged media-Democratic alliance “yet another attempt to impeach the president.”

But that was then.

With Trump’s declaration on Friday that the virus constitutes a national emergency, the tone on Fox News has quickly shifted.

In the video, each of the political personalities quickly flip-flops when the reality of the situation became apparent, even to Trump. You can read more details about each hypocritical u-turn by the Fox News folks here.
