Jan 6 Committee Refers Trump For Criminal Prosecution On 4 Counts

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol voted unanimously today to send to Justice Department prosecutors criminal referrals recommending Donald Trump be charged with four federal crimes. • Inciting or assisting an insurrection • Obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress • Conspiracy to defraud the United States • Conspiracy to make a false statement It’s worth noting the referrals are only recommendations and carry no legal weight. The Justice Department isn’t required to do anything with these referrals and will only move forward of its own accord. That said, historians will note that this  is the first time Congress has made such referrals regarding a former president. The committee’s criminal referrals included 5 Trump allies — Mark Meadows, his final chief of staff, and the lawyers Rudolph W. Giuliani, John Eastman, Jeffrey Clark and Kenneth Chesebro — for potential prosecution. The committee also unanimously approved referring four House Republicans – Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan, Andy Biggs and Scott Perry – to the House Ethics Committee for refusing to comply with the panel’s subpoenas.
