Pew Poll: Hillary Clinton Holds 9+ Lead Over Donald Trump

Pew Research shares the latest nationwide results in the 2016 presidential campaign:

The new national survey by Pew Research Center was conducted June 15-26 among 2,245 adults, including 1,655 registered voters.

In a two-way contest, 51% of registered voters support Clinton or lean toward her, while 42% support or lean toward Trump.

In a three-way contest, including Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson, 45% favor Clinton, 36% support Trump and 11% back Johnson.

A majority of registered voters (56%) say the phrase “personally qualified to be president” better describes Clinton than Trump; just 30% say the phrase better describes Trump.

Far more voters also say the phrase “would use good judgment in a crisis” better describes Clinton (53%) than Trump (36%).

It’s interesting to note that in 2012, the June Pew Poll showed President Obama up over Mitt Romney 50% to 46%, and Obama went on to win by the same margin – 4 points.

In June of 2008, Obama led Sen. John McCain by 8 points, 48% – 40%, and Obama won by a similar spread – 7 points.

I’ll  be curious to see if this predictive ability holds up this November.

Bernie Sanders Expected To Formally Endorse Hillary Clinton Next Week

The Huffington Post is reporting that Sen. Bernie Sanders is widely expected to formally endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at a campaign rally to be held in New Hampshire next Tuesday.

The endorsement could help allay concerns of party unity among Democrats ahead of the nominating convention to be held later this month in Philadelphia.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sanders sounded resolute in his support for Clinton saying, “We have got to do everything that we can to defeat Donald Trump and elect Hillary Clinton. I don’t honestly know how we would survive four years of a Donald Trump [as president].”

President Obama On Latest Fatal Police Shootings: “These Fatal Shootings Are Not Isolated Incidents”

President Obama responded to the two latest fatal shootings by members of the police force.

From the president’s Facebook page:

All Americans should be deeply troubled by the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. We’ve seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who’ve suffered such a painful loss.

Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry.

But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what’s clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.

To admit we’ve got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement.

That’s why, two years ago, I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing that convened police officers, community leaders, and activists. Together, they came up with detailed recommendations on how to improve community policing. So even as officials continue to look into this week’s tragic shootings, we also need communities to address the underlying fissures that lead to these incidents, and to implement those ideas that can make a difference. That’s how we’ll keep our communities safe. And that’s how we can start restoring confidence that all people in this great nation are equal before the law.

In the meantime, all Americans should recognize the anger, frustration, and grief that so many Americans are feeling — feelings that are being expressed in peaceful protests and vigils. Michelle and I share those feelings. Rather than fall into a predictable pattern of division and political posturing, let’s reflect on what we can do better. Let’s come together as a nation, and keep faith with one another, in order to ensure a future where all of our children know that their lives matter.

Minnesota: Fatal Police Shooting Livestreamed On Facebook As Victim Lay Dying

Yet another deeply disturbing, violent death of an African-American male by police today.

This shooting occurred in St. Anthony, Minnesota, at a traffic stop for a broken tail light.

From USA Today:

St. Anthony interim Police Chief Jon Mangseth said Philando Castile, 32, was fatally shot during a traffic stop at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Diamond Reynolds said she and her 4-year-old daughter were in the car. She livestreamed the immediate aftermath of the shooting, which showed Castile bleeding and dazed while the officer continues to point his gun, so that “the people can determine who was right and who was wrong,” she said.

Gov. Mark Dayton expressed condolences to Castile’s family and asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the shooting. FBI Director James Comey said he expects federal authorities to investigate the case.

Mr. Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, told reporters later that she had taught her son to be extremely cautious when encountering members of law enforcement. “If you get stopped by the police, comply,” Ms. Castile said. “Comply, comply, comply.”

The video streamed by Reynolds is below. Be aware it is graphic in nature.

Eric Trump: Ivanka Trump Could Be Vice-President Because She’s “Beautiful” & “Smart”

The Hill reports that Eric Trump, son of presumptive GOP nominee for president Donald Trump, has declared his sister based on her intelligence and “beautiful looks” is qualified for the vice-presidency.

Eric Trump on Thursday floated his sister Ivanka Trump as a potential running mate for his father.

“She’s got the beautiful looks, she’s smart, she’s smart, smart, smart,” Eric Trump said Thursday on Fox News. “She’s certainly got my vote.”

Trump noted that his sister will turn 35 just before the election — the minimum age required by the Constitution to be president or vice president.

“She just makes that by about seven, eight days,” he said, calling Ivanka Trump “a machine.”

For a campaign that denounces any kind of sexism is in play in this election cycle, I have to wonder why Eric Trump made a point of describing her appearance as part of her qualifications…?

Star Trek Beyond Reveals Sulu To Be Gay With Same-Sex Partner

The character of “Hikaru Sulu,” played by John Cho in the current reboot of the sci-fi franchise and George Takei in the iconic TV series, is portrayed as openly gay and having a same-sex partner in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.

Via OUT:

Star Trek Beyond’s Hikara Sulu will be revealed as gay in the third installment of the sci-fi reboot as a nod to the role’s original actor and openly gay activist, George Takei.

Sulu, played by John Cho in Beyond, will be shown to have a daughter with a same-sex partner, Cho revealed in an interview while promoting the movie in Sydney.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it,” Cho told The Herald Sun, “which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

Takei was closeted during his time on the show, but later came out in the early 2000s and has been a strong voice for LGBT rights. In 2015, he revealed that he had approached Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry about gays and lesbians on the show. The show had already pushed serious cultural boundaries when an episode aired the first interracial kiss on television.

Takei said that the creators worried if they went too far, they would lose the show.

“But I think we’re getting closer to that utopian society that Gene Roddenberry visualized,” Takei said last year, “much more rapidly than even the technology.”

Hillary Clinton Proposes Tuition-Free College For Households Making Less Than $125K

Hillary Clinton

Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has announced she supports waiving tuition at four year public colleges for students whose families make less than $125,000.

The Clinton campaign announced the shift in higher education policy is a result of private meetings with Sen. Bernie Sanders.

For months Clinton has promoted the idea of free community college plus “debt-free” policies which would help students shake off thousands in student loans. During the Democratic primary, she disagreed with the idea of free college for everyone saying, “I don’t think taxpayers should be paying to send Donald Trump’s kids to college.”

The announced policy would be phased in over five years starting with an initial threshold of $85,000 in household income, and expanding to those making less than $125,000 by 2021.
