DNC Denounces Donald Trump, Marco Rubio Attending Anti-LGBT Hate Fest

A joint statement from Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile and DNC LGBT Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes publicly denounces GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and Sen. Marco Rubio for participating in today’s anti-LGBT hate fest in Orlando.

“Instead of honoring the memory of those we lost at Pulse two months ago, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio have come to Orlando to headline a gathering of some of the nation’s most incendiary anti-gay bigots.

“We at the DNC join all people of good conscience in expressing our solidarity with the Orlando LGBT community as they continue to grieve the deadliest shooting in American history.

“We suggest Trump and Rubio disavow these anti-gay extremists who have likened gay people to Nazis and characterized HIV/AIDS as divine ‘penalties’ for being gay. Failing to do so will be yet another example of the utter lack of judgment that makes Trump unfit to serve.”

The “Rediscovering God in America Renewal Project”, a gathering of anti-LGBT pastors, is taking place exactly two months after the attack on LGBT Americans at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando which left 49 dead and dozens injured.

“Daily Beast” Reporter Poses As Gay On Grindr At Rio Olympics

A “reporter” for The Daily Beast – Nico Hines – thought it would be fascinating journalism to fire up Grindr while attending the Rio Olympics and pretend to hook up with Olympic athletes.

Oh – did I mention the “reporter” is a straight, married male?

So the story starts off bad enough, but it gets worse when the “reporter” publishes a “story” basically outing several of these athletes, many of which live in repressive countries. Included in the original article were details such as the heights, weights and other physical features of the Olympic athletes with whom he communicated with which puts these athletes at risk.

This is a seriously ethical mess. This isn’t journalism. This is trashy, unprincipled and terribly dangerous.

I’ll note that I keep putting the word “reporter” in parenthesis because I’m not sure I can refer to this guy as a journalist.

The article, written with mocking condescension, eventually had to be edited after several hours online.

The Daily Beast appended the article with this editor’s note:

A number of readers complained to The Daily Beast after the publication of the original iteration of this story. We take such complaints seriously because a central part of The Daily Beast’s mission is to fight for full equality and equal treatment for LGBT people around the world.

Publishing an article that in any way could be seen as homophobic is contrary to our mission. There was some concern that the original version of this story might out gay male athletes, even by implication, or compromise their safety.

This was never our reporter’s intention, of course. No names were ever used and some of the profiles described were of straight women. But there was a concern that even mentioning the home nation of some gay athletes could compromise their safety. As a result, we have removed all descriptions of the men and women’s profiles that we previously described.

Mic had this reaction:

In this pseudo-ethnographic piece, Hines has failed at meeting one of journalism’s central tenets. For reference, the Society of Professional Journalists’ code of ethics has an entire section on “minimizing harm.” In it, SPJ says, “Ethical journalism treats sources, subjects, colleagues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect.”

Hines, who is married with children, included the heights, weights and countries of origin of several athletes whom he arranged dates with. That he saw this as no big deal is a huge problem and shows that he is blind to his own privilege by writing the piece.

Putting an Olympian’s stats next to their country of origin endangers the well-being of that person, especially when one athlete was from Central Asia, a region in which LGBT people are “marginalized, criminalized, and are exposed to high levels of violence, harassment and discrimination,” according to one U.S. congressman’s testimony.

Folks on Twitter appropriately lost their shit:

Former Disgraced Congressman Sits In Trump Rally VIP Seat

Donald Trump, speaking to a crowd in Sunrise, Florida, took off on a rant about Hillary Clinton speaking in Florida two days earlier where Clinton didn’t realize that seated right behind her at the rally was the father of Omar Mateen, the man who murdered 49 people at a gay club in Orlando this past June.

Important to note that when notified about Mateen’s attendance, the Clinton campaign said in an emailed statement, “The rally was a 3,000-person, open-door event for the public. This individual wasn’t invited as a guest and the campaign was unaware of his attendance until after the event.”

Nick Merrill, a Clinton spokesman said later, “She disagrees with his views and disavows his support.”

Trump razzed Hillary about the elder Mateen’s attendance, BUT – wait for it – seated just behind Trump, in a similarly visible seat as Mateen had had, was former GOP congressman Mark Foley who resigned in disgrace back in 2006 after sending a series of sexually explicit instant messages to several underage congressional page.

Check what Trump had to say about Hillary’s Mateen mistake with Foley right over his shoulder:

“Wasn’t it terrible when the father of the animal that killed the wonderful people in Orlando was sitting with a big smile on his face right behind Hillary Clinton? And by the way … a lot of the people here — how many of you people know me? A lot of you people know me,” Trump said, addressing the crowd behind him as Foley raised his hand.

“When you get those seats you sort of know the campaign, so when she said, ‘Well, we didn’t know,’ he knew, they knew.”

Delicious.

Hey Trumpster – you might check the house before you jump into your next routine.

Dozens Of High Profile Republicans Beg RNC To Stop Funding Flailing Trump Campaign

Dozens of Republicans have penned an open letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus begging him to stop funding the flailing Trump campaign and shift those efforts to Senate and House races.

From Politico:

More than 70 Republicans have signed an open letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus urging him to stop spending any money to help Donald Trump win in November and shift those contributions to Senate and House races.

The letter comes as a number of Republican senators and high-profile GOP national security officials have come forward saying they cannot vote for Trump.

“We believe that Donald Trump’s divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence, and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide, and only the immediate shift of all available RNC resources to vulnerable Senate and House races will prevent the GOP from drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck,” states a draft of the letter obtained by POLITICO. “This should not be a difficult decision, as Donald Trump’s chances of being elected president are evaporating by the day.”

Donald Trump Covers TIME Magazine – “Meltdown.”

Donald Trump covers the new issue of TIME Magazine but it’s probably not a cover the Trumpster will frame and hang on the wall.

And the cover image is only the beginning as TIME delves into what may be the biggest presidential meltdown in history.

Well worth the read, here’s just a few highlights:

On Trump’s disintegrating relationship with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus:

But every bond has its breaking point. For this partnership, the moment nearly arrived in early August. Priebus was on vacation when he learned that Trump had declined to endorse Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House and a close friend. The chairman had a frank message for the nominee, according to two Republican officials briefed on the call. Priebus told Trump that internal GOP polling suggested he was on track to lose the election. And if Trump didn’t turn around his campaign over the coming weeks, the Republican National Committee would consider redirecting party resources and machinery to House and Senate races.

On the mood behind the scenes at Team Trump:

Like the rest of the party, Trump’s staff has been flummoxed by his political naiveté. They describe a candidate who doesn’t understand the basics of modern campaigns, from why you knock on doors to how to read a poll to why he should be dialing for dollars more aggressively. His headquarters has enough palace intrigue and warring fiefs to rival the fictional badlands of Westeros. “You’re always afraid of getting fired,” says one staffer, “but it’s his fault, not ours.”

Protester Rushes Stage At Hillary Clinton Rally, Clinton Doesn’t Flinch

The Independent is reporting on an animal rights activist who rushed the stage at a Hillary Clinton rally as the former Secretary of State was speaking.

Hillary Clinton was rushed at by an animal rights protester during a speech on the economy, the second time in a week. Ms Clinton was talking in Des Moines, Iowa, and facing the other way as a woman launched herself over the barrier and towards the stage.

She has been named as 26-year-old Kelsey Atkinson from campaign group Direct Action Everywhere, which fights for “total animal liberation”. Just as the protester got to the steps, Secret Service staff pulled Ms Atkinson away.

You’ll note as the Secret Service take the protester down in the background Hillary doesn’t even flinch or break stride as she continues talking on her policy proposals.

My girl Hillary is one cool customer 🙂

Trump Supporter Climbs Trump Tower, Issues Requests “Private Audience” With Trump

A Donald Trump supporter pre-taped this message before freaking the police out in NYC today by climbing Trump Tower with suction cups.

The Donald’s followers supporters called for the police to shoot the man down before learning he is actually ONE OF THEM.

The police eventually snagged him mid-climb and took him to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Police say he will be charged at some point in the future.

The man refers to himself as a private researcher requesting a private audience with Trump.

The guy seems a bit unhinged to me, but take a listen and see what you think.
