Trump, Of All People, Fat Shames A Supporter At Campaign Rally

Donald Trump

At his New Hampshire campaign rally Thursday night, Donald Trump fat-shamed what appeared to be a protester as they were being ejected from the event.

It turns out, however, the man was actually a supporter.

From The Hill:

The man, Frank Dawson, law enforcement and Navy veteran, was interviewed by Fox News Thursday night following the rally and revealed he was a Trump supporter, adding that he ripped signs out of the hands of nearby protesters at the rally.

“He didn’t see me rip the signs away from those three people that were sitting near us, and they were trying to cause a ruckus,” Dawson told Fox. “It wasn’t going to happen beside me because I’m trying to listen to my president.”

“I think he thought I was part of it, but I wasn’t. I was the good part of it,” Dawson added.

Trump singled out Dawson at Thursday’s campaign-style rally when protesters were being escorted out of the arena, apparently mistaking him for one of the demonstrators.

“That guy’s got a serious weight problem. Go home, start exercising,” Trump said at the rally in Manchester.

“Get him out of here, please. Got a bigger problem than I do,” Trump added. “Got a bigger problem than all of us. Now he goes home and his mom says, ‘What the hell have you just done?'”

Trump was reportedly informed of his mistake, asked for the supporter’s contact info and called Dawson from Air Force One.

A White House official said Friday that Trump left a voicemail message thanking him for his support, but the call didn’t include an apology.

Aaron Schock’s ‘Beach Bro’ Says Former Congressman Has “Grown And Changed Significantly”

(image via Instagram)

Several days ago, I reported on a post by Instagrammer Jeremy Cormier which pictured himself with his friend/“beach bro,” former quisling Republican Congressman Aaron Schock.

A post shared by Jeremy Cormier (@jeremycormier) on Aug 9, 2019 at 9:32am PDT

As many know by now, Schock resigned from office in 2015 amid scandal regarding allegations of misusing campaign funds for personal use.

While in office, the Illinois Republican, who was long-rumored to be in the closet, voted against LGBTQ rights such as supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and voting against the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Schock disappeared from the public eye for some time but resurfaced this spring hanging out with shirtless gay men at the Coachella Music Festival. Photos and video also came to light showing Schock making out with a young man while working his hands down the guy’s pants.

There’s more, but you get the gist. In other words, it appears the ‘rumors’ were true.

Last week, Cormier a photo of the two on the beach with their impressive abs on full display, and the ‘influencer’ made a point to tag Schock (apparently they are “beach bros”) in the post.

Now, considering Cormier spends a great deal of time on social media (at least his abs do), he had to know there would be a response about his newly-announced “beach bro.”

And there most definitely were.

Comments on that post and subsequent posts asked Cormier his thoughts on Schock’s anti-LGBTQ voting record and how, as a proud gay, he could consort with the former lawmaker.

Instinctreached out to Cormier at the time via the email address shown in his Instagram account to ask his “side” of the story. To date, we haven’t received a reply.

Cormier has now responded via his Instagram account.

In the new post, he acknowledges the “attention” the post received and the questions raised by some followers.

First up, he makes a point to clear the about the label of ‘influencer,’ saying he never claimed that title. But he assures readers that “if he were to try and influence anyone it would be to do something good.”

Cormier shares that he and Mr. Schock became friends at some point this year, but stresses he has never “shared or supported” the former congressman’s views he ‘espoused’ while in office.

The Instagrammer adds that to know Schock “is to know someone who’s viewpoint has grown and changed significantly in the last decade.”

Cormier contends that in order to “affect change open communication among those with differing views is essential.”

“The support our community enjoys can only grow when we reach out to those who don’t share our viewpoint,” he adds.

This is where I’ll point out (again) that here at Instinct we did reach out to Mr. Cormier and received no response. Not exactly the ‘open communication’ he seems to be espousing.

Turning the corner (or perhaps deflecting the issue at hand), Cormier then asks readers to donate to The Victory Fund, which works to help elect openly LGBTQ candidates to public office. He shares that he has already made a $500 donation himself.

Cormier goes on to say that in the days since he posted his photo tagging Schock, he has “experienced bullying and personal hatred” that he wouldn’t wish on anyone.

“That behavior can never be justified even when it’s directed toward those who don’t support us,” he adds. Cormier continues saying he encourages “everyone to fight against hatred and bullying wherever it exists.”

And in that spirit, he also announces he’s made a donation to The Trevor Project, the leading national organization that helps young LGBTQ people in crisis and offers counseling for those considering suicide.

Cormier draws his statement to a close stating he is not “perfect.”

“I am a normal, flawed individual and have never claimed otherwise,” says Cormier. “But what I do know is hate is toxic and it perpetuates – it is good for no one. I recognize this is only a small effort but let’s do something good together.”

Now, I appreciate the tenor and tone of the post.

But I feel Cormier misses both the point and an opportunity here. And, it feels a bit like he’s playing the victim card here.

After blithely posting a photo with someone who literally worked AGAINST the good of the LGBTQ community, with a caption of ‘beach bros,’ Cormier seems taken aback that anyone noticed or had a reaction.

In one sentence he shares that Schock has “grown and changed significantly.” But neither he nor Schock have addressed HOW he has changed.

The intrepid Instagrammer says open communication is key to effect change, but he doesn’t say if HIS conversations with the former congressman have been, in any way, to affect that change.

What LGBTQ people are up in arms about is Schock seeming to shrug off his past while playing with the gays in West Hollywood and tipping go-go boys in Mexico City.

After months of LGBTQ media noting these episodes and wondering, “Has he changed? Did he have some sort of epiphany?”, Schock remains silent.

For Schock’s part, he can easily sit down with a member of the LGBTQ media and openly discuss the journey to ‘here.’

Everyone comes out in their own time. Absolutely.

But folks don’t get to vote against their own marginalized community, then enjoy the benefits of that community that fought long and hard for its own rights while simultaneously playing the victim.

In a single interview, Schock can clear the air.

Hey, Aaron – call me. I promise to quote you in full; no ‘out-of-context’ action whatsoever.

Some folks may wonder why the LGBTQ media won’t let this go. Since this is my blog, let me put this in personal terms.

I didn’t meet my father-in-law for 17 years. Early on it was made clear he was uncomfortable with his son being gay. And, with my husband’s family living on the other side of the country, I was never invited to come to visit or get to know him.

Fine. I understood parents have to come to terms with a son’s coming out. So, it was what it was.

Finally, though, there came a time where we were all going to be in the same place at the same time – attending a concert by one of my husband’s client. By then, the dad was “used to” the idea of his son being married to a man, but it just wasn’t discussed.

With an impending face-to-face meeting on the horizon, my father-in-law told my hubby, “Fine, we’ll just meet at the concert.”

Now, after that time, I didn’t hold a grudge. But, the one thing I put my foot down about was I would not let 17 years of being ignored as a member of the family be swept away by a quick “Hi, nice to meet you” as the lights went down in a theater.

I insisted my hubby, his parents and I sit down for a meal the night before and actually get to know each other.

That’s what happened. It healed a LOT. Today, we are all fine and family.

In saying that, my point is: if Aaron Schock would reach out to the community he helped harm, and have the “open communication” Cormier espouses, I think many would feel somewhat easier about moving on from Schock and his past.

Regarding Cormier, I understand he would feel the need to say ’something’ about the controversial post.

And now, he has.

I realize the post I made the other day has gotten a lot of attention and raised questions about what I stand for. I’d like to address that now. Among other things, it has been assumed that my sole goal in life is to be an Instagram ‘influencer’ and while I have never claimed that, if I were to ever try and influence anyone it would be to do something good. So here’s what I have to say: Aaron Schock and I became friends in 2019. I do not now, nor have I ever shared or supported the views he espoused concerning LGBTQ rights while in Congress. Knowing him, is to know someone who’s viewpoint has grown and changed significantly in the last decade. To affect change open communication among those with differing views is essential. The support our community enjoys can only grow when we reach out to those who don’t share our viewpoint. In that vein I invite you to join me in donating to the @victoryfund , I have already donated $500. The organization works to elect openly LGBTQ persons to protect our community and advance equality. Since my post was made I have experienced bullying and personal hatred on a level that I would not wish on anyone. That behavior can never be justified even when it’s directed toward those who don’t support us. I encourage everyone to fight against hatred and bullying wherever it exists. To do that, please join me in donating to the @trevorproject , an organization fighting to provide crisis counseling to LGBTQ youth – many of whom have suffered from bullying. Once again, I have already donated $500 and invite others to donate as well. I’m not perfect. I am a normal, flawed individual and have never claimed otherwise. But what I do know is hate is toxic and it perpetuates – it is good for no one. I recognize this is only a small effort but let’s do something good together.

Hickenlooper Drops Out Of White House Race, Considering Run For U.S. Senate

John Hickenlooper (screen capture)

The New York Times reports former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper announced on Thursday that he is ending his presidential campaign.

A moderate political voice in the Democratic party, his policies and approach never took off in a field of candidates vying to be the “most progressive.”

Mr. Hickenlooper has been seriously considering a run for the Republican-held Senate seat in Colorado that is up for election in 2020 — a key pickup target in the Democrats’ strategy to try to retake control of the Senate.

“Today, I’m ending my campaign for president,” he said in a videotaped statement. “But I will never stop believing that America can only move forward when we work together.”

“I’ve heard from so many Coloradans who want me to run for the United States Senate,” he added. “They remind me how much is at stake for our country. And our state. I intend to give that some serious thought.”

Truth be told, I think he would be a formidable senatorial candidate for Colorado. And, with Democrats needing to pick up four Senate seats, he would be far more useful running for Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, who is up for reelection in 2020.

I think the same can be said for former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke. The ‘magic’ from the 2018 election cycle has failed to materialize for him in his presidential run.

But support for O’Rourke in his home state is strong. And GOP incumbent John Cornyn would face a tough challenge with O’Rourke as his opponent.

In my humble opinion…

Poll: Warren Takes 11 Point Lead In Iowa

Sen. Elizabeth Warren

The latest Iowa Starting Line-Change Research poll shows Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has opened up an 11 point lead in the Iowa Caucus.

Warren scored 28% support from likely Iowa Caucus-goers in the poll.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) were tied for second with 17 percent each.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg came in fourth at 13 percent and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has the backing of 8 percent.

Both Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) garnered 3% of caucus-goers’ support.

The remaining candidates received 2 percent or less.

That’s quite a change from the last Starting Line-Change Research poll from May when Warren was in the middle of the pack in 4th place.

Here’s where things stood then, along with their movement since:

May Poll (change to August):
Joe Biden: 24% (-7)
Bernie Sanders: 24% (-7)
Pete Buttigieg: 14% (-1)
Elizabeth Warren: 12% (+16)
Kamala Harris: 10% (-2)
Beto O’Rourke: 5% (-2)

Texas Gay Bar Faces Boycott After Trump-Supporting Owner Announces Run For Congress

Mauro Garza (image via campaign website)

The LGBTQ community of San Antonio, Texas, is boycotting a local gay bar after the Trump-loving owner announced he is running for the Republican nomination for Congress in the county’s district.

Mauro Garza is the openly-gay owner of the Pegasus Nightclub in San Antonio.

He has announced he will be running for the GOP nomination for the state’s 20th Congressional District hoping to face-off against incumbent Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro, a longtime LGBTQ ally.

His announcement tweet garnered one ‘Like.’

Texas’ 20th District is located in Jefferson County – the state’s only ‘pivot’ county. Pivot counties are those that voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 but went to Donald Trump in 2016.

Castro, who was first elected to Congress in 2012, easily won reelection in 2018 with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Garza proudly identifies as conservative and is a member of the Log Cabin Republicans.

An enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump, he campaigned in 2018 to be the Republican nominee for Texas’ 21st District but fell woefully short of winning the nomination coming in 15th in the Republican primary garnering less than 1 percent of the vote.

He’s mainly remembered for running around in a red MAGA-type hat with the slogan “Make TX-21 Greater.”

Hardly the stuff of political legend.

If you check out Garza’s Twitter feed, you’ll find a litany of anti-Democratic attacks and retweets from the Donald’s account. He’s also a staunch supporter of virulently anti-LGBTQ Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

The LGBTQ folks in San Antonio aren’t having Mr. Garza’s campaign announcement, and a boycott of his nightclub has been launched.

Local activists have launched a Twitter account, @ProtestThePeg, urging local patrons and performers to ditch the club.

The group also demands that Garza “sell Pegasus & the property itself so that LGBTQ money no longer goes to supporting xenophobic, racist, misogynistic, and anti-LGBTQ ideologies.”

In their call for a nationwide boycott, Protest The Peg singled out RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Kennedy Davenport who performed at Pegasus in July and has shown no public support for the boycott.

“We understand there are many artists who rely on the entertainment industry as their source of income,” they wrote in a statement. “We are fully aware of the limits systemic oppression can impose on us to secure employment and meet our needs. We recognize that our spaces are the safest for LGBTQIA+ talent to work.”

“However, the LGBTQIA+ entertainment industry provides different platforms that reach large audiences,” the group continued. “We ask that you use those platforms responsibly and refrain from contracting talent to attend or perform at Pegasus Nightclub.”

On his campaign website, Garza promises to “advocate Conservative Reform for the LGBT+ Community,” whatever that might be.

Out Rapper Lil Nas X Covers TIME Magazine

TIME Magazine covers the rise of Lil Nas X (screen capture)

These are heady, well-earned times for rapper Lil Nas X.

Less than a year ago, the college drop-out was living on his sister’s floor.

Fast-forward to the release of his mega-hit single, “Old Town Road,” now the longest-running number-one song sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks now.

Along that journey, Lil Nas decided during Pride Month to come out as gay as his single continued its meteoric trajectory.

And now, the chart-busting country/hip-hop artist is covering TIME Magazine.

When @lilnasx’s debut single “Old Town Road” exploded online early this year and began climbing the charts, industry prognosticators anticipated a quick rise and fall. It’s now the longest-running No. 1 song in history, having occupied the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks. It’s been streamed more than a billion times on @spotify alone. All of this has made “Old Town Road” the defining sound of the year, a slurry, genre-busting interpolation of two quintessential American musical genres: #country and hip-hop. Yet even from his perch, writes Andrew R. Chow, Lil Nas is still an outlier. There aren’t many black stars in country #music; there aren’t many queer stars in #hiphop. There aren’t many queer black stars in American culture, point-blank. The fact that Lil Nas has risen so far and so fast testifies not only to his skill, but also to the erosion of the systems that for generations kept #artists like him on the sidelines. At a time when debates about categorization and identity are ubiquitous, Lil Nas X represents a more unified vision of the future, one in which a young #queer black man can dominate popular #culture by being unapologetically himself. “Everything lined up for this moment to take me to this place,” he says now. “Not to sound self-centered, but it feels like I’m chosen, in a way, to do this stuff.” Read more at the link in bio. In an interview for the venerable publication, Lil Nas explains what having THE number one song represents to him.

“To me, ‘Old Town Road’ being the longest-running number-one song of all time means that…everybody has great taste in music,” says the 20-year-old with a sly smile before adding, “I’m joking.”

“My reaction, just like, me…I was in a complete state of shock,” he adds in a candid moment. “I cried a little bit.”

For someone who grew up poor, being shuttled from one divorced parent to another, it can only be mind-boggling that, in addition to the chart action, “Old Town Road” has been streamed – on Spotify alone – over a billion times.

TIME notes how disparate the stars that have aligned are that brought this to be.

“There aren’t many black stars in country music; there aren’t many queer stars in hip-hop,” writes Andrew Chow for TIME. “There aren’t many queer black stars in American culture, point-blank.”

“The fact that Lil Nas has risen so far and so fast testifies not only to his skill but also to the erosion of the systems that for generations kept artists like him on the sidelines,” adds Chow.

Chow points to social media and streaming platforms for ‘democratizing’ the path to possible success in the music industry today.

When @lilnasx recorded “Old Town Road” last fall, he was hoping it could be his way out of an unhappy life. Born Montero Lamar Hill outside #Atlanta in 1999, Lil Nas grew up poor, living with one parent or another—his mother and father split when he was 6. As he spent most of his teenage years alone, he began to live on the Internet and particularly Twitter, creating #memes that showed his disarming wit and pop-culture savvy. “It was like, I’m able to go viral, but I’m not promoting anything that’s gonna help me,” he says. “Until music came along.” A gifted vocalist since he was a child—his father is a gospel singer—Lil Nas began writing and recording songs in his closet. When, around last Halloween, he stumbled across a banjo-driven beat by the teenage Dutch producer @youngkio, he saw an opportunity to combine trap—a Southern-born #hiphop subgenre propelled by vicious bass and crawling tempos—with #country, which was experiencing a surge of popularity on the Internet. “Because it’s two polar opposites coming together, it’s funny no matter what it is,” he says. For the history of #music, artists like Lil Nas were the exception, writes Andrew R. Chow. Now, by definition, Lil Nas is the rule. Read more at the link in bio. That said, Lil Nas isn’t doing the cocky walk any time soon.

He tells TIME, “Everything lined up for this moment to take me to this place,” adding that he feels “chosen” to be in this place at this time.

The country-trap artist didn’t expect “this time” to include coming out, but, here we are.

“I know the people who listen to this the most, and they’re not accepting of homosexuality,” admits Nas. “I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe.”

As “Old Town Road” continued its reign at number one, the U.S. entered Pride Month, and the artist says he saw “Pride flags everywhere” and “couples holding hands.”

And so, he tweeted one of the most casual ‘coming out’ moments in music history.

What’s next for the young musician?

“I definitely feel the need to use my platform to spread positivity and do good things for the world,” he says thoughtfully. “I don’t want to be, in the last minute like, ‘Dang, I should have said something about this, you know?”

“From here, I just want to keep making whatever my ears catch hold to and happen to love.”

Dow Jones Tanks 800 Points As Bond Market Flips

Donald Trump

So. Much. Winning.

From NBC News:

Wall Street took a battering on Wednesday, suffering its worst day so far this year after movements in the bond market signaled the sharpest indication yet of an approaching recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had already shed 400 points at the opening bell, spent the day in freefall before closing with a decline of 800 points, a drop of over 3 percent. The S&P 500 closed down 2.93 percent, and the Nasdaq posted a decline of just over 3 percent.

The market selloff was the result of an inverted yield curve in government bonds, when the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note falls below the 2-year rate — a phenomenon that has preceded every recession for the past 50 years.

President Donald Trump blamed the Federal Reserve for Wednesday’s market plunge, calling Fed Chairman Jerome Powell “clueless” in an afternoon tweet. Trump has consistently lambasted Powell for not cutting rates at a faster pace, and has said “the stock market would be 10,000 points higher” if the Fed had followed a different strategy.

NBC News goes on to repeat “all of the past recessions have been preceded by inversions of the yield curve.”

Of course, what Trump is REALLY upset about is how the timing of a possible recession would affect his reelection after boasting about “his” economy for so long.

By the way – want to guess WHO nominated Powell to the Fed Chair position?
