Australians To Consider Same-Sex Marriage Via Non-Binding Mail-In Vote

The Prime Minister of Australia contends that before Parliament moves to legalize marriage equality “down under,” he wants the people of Australia to have their say.

Polls in Australia show overwhelming public support for same-sex marriage – 67% of women and 59% of men in Australia want to see marriage equality become the law of the land.

From UPI:

Australian citizens will be asked where they stand on potential legalization of same-sex marriage in a non-binding mail-in vote, after lawmakers failed to pass legislation Wednesday to make it a national plebiscite vote issue in November.

Canberra’s governing Liberal-National Coalition failed to pass a bill in Parliament that would have secured funding to restore Australia’s compulsory plebiscite on Nov. 25, which means the same-sex marriage vote will instead likely take shape as a voluntary voting effort.

“At the last election, we made a very clear promise to the Australian people that we would not facilitate the introduction of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage until the Australian people had had their say,” Turnbull said in a press conference on Tuesday prior to the plebiscite effort falling short.

The traditional plebiscite and postal votes would not be legally binding if it’s shown that most Australians support legalizing same-sex marriage. Turnbull had said if the plebiscite bill failed, then he would move ahead with the vote-by-mail option.

“We will hold a postal vote on this issue asking the same question in which all Australians will have their say — they will get the opportunity to express their opinion on the issue of whether the law should be changed to enable same-sex couples to marry, fulfilling the commitment we made at the election,” he said.

Some who voted against the plebiscite said they don’t oppose legalization of same-sex marriage, but rather they believe the effort is too expensive and could generate a hate-fueled campaign.

Some lawmakers argue the issue could be resolved with a simple vote in Parliament, but Turnbull’s government seeks to gauge public support first. The Liberal-National Coalition attempted to legalize same-sex marriage last year, but the proposal was narrowly defeated.

As reported above, even if the vote shows same-sex marriage the winner, Aussie lawmakers don’t have to align current laws to reflect that support.

According to Buzzfeed, the “vote by mail” will cost in the neighborhood of $122 million, around $50 million less than a compulsory, in-person ballot.

Or, Parliament could just vote to approve marriage equality – no cost.

Trump Claims U.S. Nuclear Weapons Have Been “Renovated” And “Modernized” In Six Months

Donald Trump began his day sending more saber-rattling and bluster directed at North Korea as he tweeted to the world that his “first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before…”

The problem is that every executive order given by the president is made public.

Not only has Trump not taken any action on the U.S. nuclear arsenal, but it’s actually President Obama who began the years-long process of updating our nuclear weaponry.

You can’t “renovate and modernize” nuclear weapons in 6 months.

And we all know it.

Well, all but one of us.

Trump’s empty boasts come in the aftermath of news reports saying North Korea had developed technology sufficient to arm a miniturized nuclear device on an intercontinental ballistic missile.

In a knee-jerk reaction, Trump told the world he was ready to unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea should they continue their current path.

This blind, boastful approach may work in a board room, but it’s an amateur approach to world diplomacy.

The Twitterverse was quick to fact-check the president:

Sen. John McCain Takes Exception With Trump’s “Fire & Fury” Comments To North Korea

Sen. John McCain

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said he “takes exception” to President Trump’s “fire and fury” remarks made after the news reported that North Korea has apparently produced a nuclear warhead small enough to launch on an intercontinental missile.

Via The Hill:

“I don’t know what he’s saying and I’ve long ago given up trying to interpret what he says,” McCain said of Trump during an interview with a local Arizona radio station first reported by NBC.

“That kind of rhetoric, I’m not sure how it helps.”

McCain said the U.S. risks getting into a serious confrontation with North Korea, and invoked former President Teddy Roosevelt’s famous “big stick” policy.

“In other words, the old walk softly but carry a big stick, Teddy Roosevelt’s saying, which I think is something that should’ve applied because all it’s going to do is bring us closer to a serious confrontation,” McCain warned. “I think this is very, very, very serious.”

Trump warned North Korea not to make any threats to the United States on Tuesday after The Washington Post reported that North Korea has produced a nuclear warhead small enough to place on a missile.

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States,” Trump told reporters Tuesday.

“He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

McCain said he “takes exception” to Trump’s remarks.

“I take exception to the president’s words because you got to be sure you can do what you say you’re going to do,” said McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

It goes without saying McCain (served in Air Force, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee) has a vastly more educated depth of understanding than Trump (five deferments for Vietnam for “bone spurs”) when it comes to military action.

A new CBS News poll shows 61% of Americans feel “uneasy” about Trump’s ability to handle a North Korean nuclear situation.

Country Music Star Glen Campbell Passes Away at 81

Glen Campbell

Country music superstar Glen Campbell, whose career notched huge crossover hits like “Gentle on My Mind,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Rhinestone Cowboy,” died Tuesday. He was 81.

In 2011, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and mounted a well-publicized farewell tour.

From his official website:

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Glen is survived by his wife, Kim Campbell of Nashville, TN; their three children, Cal, Shannon and Ashley; his children from previous marriages, Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane, and Dillon; ten grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Barbara, Sandra, and Jane; and brothers John Wallace “Shorty” and Gerald.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Glen Campbell Memorial Fund at BrightFocus Foundation through the CareLiving.org donation page.

Campbell was one of the very first true crossover artists, moving with equal ease between country and pop music.

Campbell’s career began as a studio musician for acts like The Beach Boys, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. But in 1967, he found his star on the rise.

Beginning with “Gentle on My Mind” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” Campbell launched an impressive streak of chart-topping country hits like, “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” and ” Dreams of the Everyday Housewife.”

Along the way, he racked up 7 Grammy Awards and countless other honors. His album, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, won a GRAMMY for Album Of The Year for 1968, making him the first country artist to win the award.

In 1969, he earned his own CBS variety show, “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” and made his acting debut in Paramount’s “True Grit,” alongside John Wayne. That turn yielded him a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

He sold more than 45 million records in his career and topped the country singles chart 12 times.

My brother is a huge fan and played Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” over one million times (give or take) during our childhood.

Trump Gets Twice-Daily “Propaganda Document” Filled With Positive Stories About Him

President Trump

Via Vice:

Twice a day since the beginning of the Trump administration, a special folder is prepared for the president. The first document is prepared around 9:30 a.m. and the follow-up, around 4:30 p.m. Former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and former Press Secretary Sean Spicer both wanted the privilege of delivering the 20-to-25-page packet to President Trump personally, White House sources say.

These sensitive papers, described to VICE News by three current and former White House officials, don’t contain top-secret intelligence or updates on legislative initiatives. Instead, the folders are filled with screenshots of positive cable news chyrons (those lower-third headlines and crawls), admiring tweets, transcripts of fawning TV interviews, praise-filled news stories, and sometimes just pictures of Trump on TV looking powerful.

One White House official said the only feedback the White House communications shop, which prepares the folder, has ever gotten in all these months is: “It needs to be more fucking positive.” That’s why some in the White House ruefully refer to the packet as “the propaganda document.”

Apparently, former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and former Press Secretary Sean Spicer used to compete about who got to deliver the packet of praise.

It’s no wonder Trump thinks his administration is doing better than it really is.

North Korea Now Has Missile-Ready Nuclear Weapons, Trump Threatens “Fire & Fury”

(image via Flickr)

According to the Washington Post, North Korea now has missile-ready nuclear weapons.

This is very, very bad.

North Korea has successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles, crossing a key threshold on the path to becoming a full-fledged nuclear power, U.S. intelligence officials have concluded in a confidential assessment.

The new analysis completed last month by the Defense Intelligence Agency comes on the heels of another intelligence assessment that sharply raises the official estimate for the total number of bombs in the communist country’s atomic arsenal. The U.S. calculated last month that up to 60 nuclear weapons are now controlled by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Some independent experts believe the number of bombs is much smaller.

UPDATE – Trump just issued this statement promising “fire and fury” should North Korea make any more threats to the United States.

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with the fire and fury like the world has never seen.

“He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with the fire and fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.

“Thank you.”

Summer: Block The Sun, Not The Fun

I realized that when I post my pics from the pool at Casa de Slovacek, I don’t always mention that it’s uber-important to use sunscreen.

Now that we’re in the midst of summer sun/fun days, it goes without saying everyone knows you should be using a moisturizer with sunscreen every day, right?

Not only to avoid sun burn but who wants to age any faster than you have to? I always use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen and look at me, I’m 87! (kidding…)

There are lots of products out there; some good, some not so much.
