Broadway Icon Barbara Cook Passes Away At 89

Legendary Broadway and concert performer Barbara Cook has passed away at the age of 89 due to respiratory failure.

Cook, who began her career as a musical theatre ingénue (The Music Man, She Loves Me, Candide), found later career highs on concert and cabaret stages.

Via Playbill:

Equipped with a sweet disposition and heavenly voice, Ms. Cook was possibly the most all-American, apple-pie female lead the Broadway musical stage ever saw. She played most of her important roles while in her 20s and 30s. These included two landmark musicals, She Loves Me and The Music Man—she was the original Marian the Librarian—as well as the flawed masterpiece Candide, and the lesser-known shows Plain and Fancy, Flahooley, and The Gay Life. She introduced such standards as “Till There Was You,” “My White Knight,” “Ice Cream,” and “Glitter and Be Gay.”

Harold Prince, who directed She Loves Me, once said, “I’ve heard a hundred versions of ‘Ice Cream’ but none touches Barbara Cook’s. It must be that the music and lyrics are absorbed by her characters to such an extent they preempt their authorship.”

By the early ‘70s, however, the stage roles had dried up—so she forged a second act to her career as a premier interpreter of the songs of the theatrical stage she had left behind. In 1975, she made her debut as a song stylist at Carnegie Hall, and critics took new notice of her. She returned to the hall again in 1980. By the 1990s and 2000s, she was regularly headlining the country’s best cabaret spots and concert halls.

Ironically, she said this phase of her stage life was when she began performing the meaning of a lyric. “When I first started out,” she recalled. “I didn’t give much thought to acting a song. That evolved. Now I think of it as living inside a song and singing my way out—inhabiting it, feeling it, making it felt from my core to your core. That’s the only way I can explain it.”

Cook won a Tony Award for her performance in The Music Man.

My dear friend Vanessa Williams worked with Cook in 2010’s Broadway offering Sondheim on Sondheim. Cook was honored with a Tony Award nomination for her performance.

I remember seeing Vanessa after the concert and she mentioned over and over again how honored everyone in the cast felt sharing a stage with Cook.

Cook was also the recipient of the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors.

Here’s Cook performing at the 1987 Tony Awards honoring her Music Man costar Robert Preston.

It was Cook’s much-lauded return to musical theater in 1985 for Stephen Sondheim’s Follies In Concert at Lincoln Center in 1985 that helped propel her to the highest echelons of concert artists.

Watch her “Losing My Mind” from that concert below.

And then, of course, her rendition of “Vanilla Ice Cream” from She Loves Me, here from a PBS concert:

RIP Barbara Cook.

New Music: Neon Trees “Feel Good”

Randy Report fave Neon Trees has released their highly anticipated new single, “Feel Good.”

This marks the first new music from the pop/rock band in two years, and clearly, it was worth the wait.

The tune was penned by Neon Trees’ Tyler Glenn and produced by Captain Cuts (Walk The Moon, Grouplove, Chainsmokers) at their Los Angeles studio.

“Thematically it’s essentially me saying ‘enough’ of feeling bad all the time,” Says Glenn.

“Late last year I was waking up each day, but I couldn’t wait to get back to bed. It took so much effort to just feel ok. I turned to music like I always do, and wrote “Feel Good” at a time when I was feeling pretty low. I think beyond who’s right and who’s wrong about everything going on in the world, there’s a human desire in all of us to feel ok, to ‘FEEL GOOD’. That’s one truth everyone can agree on.”

Lauded by Rolling Stone as “a New Wave pop powerhouse,” Neon Trees first arrived in 2006 and instantly attracted acclaim for their colorful, multi-layered mainstream pop style as evidenced on 2010’s debut album, Habits. The album reached #1 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers Albums” chart following the breakthrough success of its lead single, “Animal.”

“Feel Good” certainly sits comfortably in the Neon Trees song cycle with its infectious melodic hook and affirmative lyrics (“Hands up, touch the sky/everybody on your knees and testify/I was searching for the truth/I think they misunderstood/that the truth is, honey, I just want to feel good”). Elaine Bradley’s fantastic work on the drums is killer.

I like 🙂

Check out “Feel Good” below.

CNN Poll: Trump’s Approval Rating Hits Historical Low

According to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, only 38% of those polled approve of Donald Trump’s handling of the presidency, while 56% say they disapprove.

Only one other president at the six-month mark of their presidency has notched an approval rating below 50% at this point since modern polling began: Bill Clinton. At this point in 1993, Clinton had an approval rating of 44%, still 8 points better than the Trumpster.

The high 30s is where Trump seems to average when it comes to approval numbers.

But there is a troubling issue in this survey’s results for Trump. Among Republicans, strong approval has dropped by double digits – from 73% in February to 59% now. That signifies a drop of 14 points among his base.

More from the poll:

• Only 24% of Americans trust everything that comes out of the White House; 30% say they trust “nothing at all” from the Trump White House

• Just 43% believe Trump can “bring the kind of change the country needs,” down from 48% in April

• Only 39% feel Trump “can manage the government effectively,” down from 44% in April

• Just 36% say the Trump presidency is a success thus far versus 59% who say Trump is failing. At this point in their respective presidencies, both Obama and George W. Bush were considered “successful” by most Americans (51% for Obama; 56% for Bush)

• 62% say Trump’s actions and statements since taking office have made them less confident in him

• 59% say Trump isn’t paying enough attention to the country’s most critical issues

Donald Trump Has Dismal Average Approval Rating Of 36%

As Donald Trump reaches Day 200 of his presidency, it’s interesting to note how he’s faring in terms of Approval/Disapproval.

FiveThirtyEight averages the latest polls tracking how Americans feel about Trump’s performance. And the news isn’t good.

Trump currently has an aggregated 36% approval rating, coupled with 57.5% disapproval.

Compare that with both Presidents Obama and George W. Bush who averaged about 55% approval at their 200-day mark.

Throw in Bill Clinton’s 41% approval, George H.W. Bush’s 67% approval, and Reagan’s 59% approval, and you get a sense at how dismal Trump’s numbers are.

ARROW Star Stephen Amell To Haters: “Go Be On The Wrong Side Of History” On Someone Else’s Facebook Page

ARROW star Stephen Amell at Vancouver Pride

ARROW star Stephen Amell posted two pics on Facebook yesterday from his weekend in Vancouver where he took in part of the local Pride festivities with friends.

This morning, Amell was appalled to find he had haters hating on the fact that he merely POSTED PHOTOS from a Pride event.

While most were supportive, several were definitely haters. At this writing the post has over 34,000 reactions.

The TV super-hero posted this in response:

Facebook! What’s happening! So I’m scrolling through my page this morning and I was really taken aback by some of the back and forth commentary after I posted two photos from the Pride Parade / Festivities yesterday in Vancouver. The vast majority were positive, but a laughable amount were negative. I had a fantastic weekend in Vancouver with my wife and friends, met some terrific people and more than anything just tried to soak in all the positive energy from people living their best lives. If I’m in Vancouver next year I won’t just go back, I’ll walk in the parade. So for everyone in their negative pants: Go be on the wrong side of history on somebody else’s Facebook page. xo

You basically had the run-of-the-mill, common hater complaints:

Why do you have to shove this down my throat? Why do TV stars think they get to have an opinion on gay people?

Good on Amell for standing up to the haters.

Bill Maher Has “President Obama” Read Actual Trump Statements

What if Obama said it?

On HBOs Real Time with Bill Maher this past Friday, Bill wondered how Republicans would react if Barack Obama exhibited the same crude behavior as Donald Trump – with a little help from Obama impersonator Reggie Brown.

Watch as Brown reads actual Trump comments, then imagine how Republicans would have reacted if Obama had said these things.

Brown does a bang-up job as “Obama,” by the way…

Australia: Government Moves To National Vote By Mail On Same-Sex Marriage After Conscience Vote Fails In Parliament

An attempt to bring a vote on same-sex marriage in Australia’s Parliament has failed again.

From Australia’s ABC News:

Federal Liberal MPs have overwhelmingly decided to keep their current policy on same-sex marriage.

The seven MPs who voted to change the policy were: Warren Entsch and Trevor Evans (Qld), Tim Wilson and Jason Wood (Vic), John Alexander and Trent Zimmerman (NSW) and Senator Dean Smith (WA).

It means the push by a small group of Liberals for an immediate conscience vote on same-sex marriage has failed.

But Mr. Wood said it was “great news” because Australia had come a step closer to having same-sex marriage.

The Coalition will now try again to have a plebiscite — or national vote — on whether the law should be changed to allow same-sex marriage.

Mr. Wood said he strongly believed Australians would vote in favour of same-sex marriage.

And he said the feedback in his electorate was that people he represented would also vote for allowing same-sex marriage.

Opponents of a proposed plebiscite say the national vote will be costly, and in the end, non-binding.

As polls show overwhelming support for marriage equality, supporters say lawmakers could simply vote to change current laws in Parliament, rather than go the route of a public vote.

Trump Twitter Rant – Monday Edition

It was apparently raining in New Jersey this morning where Donald Trump is vacationing at his Bedminster Golf Club for 17 days.

Angry at the downpour for ruining his round of golf, Trump clearly spent time watching CNN which he repeatedly denies.

As one Twitterer notes, Sen. Blumenthal of Connecticut was on CNN this morning just before Trump tweeted an attack on him.

And on it goes…

Happy Monday!

Just a few responses from the Twitterverse:
