Donald Trump: “I Think The Press Creates A Different Image Of Donald Trump Than The Real Person”

Speaking to reporters today, Donald Trump was asked if he should consider being “more civil.”

Trump’s response? Blame the media for creating “a different image of Donald Trump than the real person.”

“You know people don’t understand, I went to an Ivy League college. I was a nice student. I did very well. I’m a very intelligent person,” said Trump. “I think the press creates a different image of Donald Trump than the real person.”

When Rosie’s Audience “Reacted” To An Actor Playing A Gay Role On TV

Kenneth-in-the-212 totally took me back with this 1999 appearance by Billy Campbell on Rosie O’Donnell’s then-venerable daytime talk show where the crowd actually gave a negative reaction when Campbell mentioned having played a gay role on television.

During the chat, Rosie asked about earlier TV credits and Campbell mentioned that he had appeared in episodes of the 80s TV drama, Dynasty, as a leading character’s boyfriend.

The crowd clearly reacted in such a negative way that Campbell turned to the live audience to say, “Lighten up, people, it’s the 90s.”

Kenneth shares in his post his own memory of Kate Jackson promoting the early 80s feature film Making Love which chronicled a married man’s coming out story. I vividly remember seeing the film when it came out and I had not.

Kenneth recalls The Tonight Show audience having a similar negative reaction that night.

As Kenneth writes, “I learned right then and there that I should be ashamed of myself — and went from being an outgoing kid to a painfully self-conscious teenager and young man.”

You can watch the Billy Campbell/Rosie O’Donnell clip below.

It may seem like a small thing here, but I clearly remember the subliminal messages these kinds of moments sent me as a young person: “‘Gay’ is bad. People won’t like you if you are ‘gay.'”

Glad it’s possible to grow past those experiences.

New Ad Calls For Impeachment Of Trump – “A Clear And Present Danger Who Is Mentally Unstable”

Check out this new ad I noticed yesterday on CNN calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump.

California billionaire Tom Steyer, who spent more than $75 million during the 2016 election to get millennials involved in progressive causes, has produced the spot as the part of a $10 million campaign calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

“A Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less. And today, people in Congress and his own administration know that this President is a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons,” says Steyer.

Note the tone of Steyer’s voice. This is not a wild, reckless rant.

I appreciate the sentiment but, of course, articles of impeachment will not be forthcoming from a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Now, should the Dems regain control of the House in next year’s mid-term elections, who knows?

Watch the spot below.

Texas Speaker Of The House, Who Stood Up Against Anti-Transgender Legislation, Will Not Run For Re-Election In 2018

Joe Straus, the Republican Speaker of the House in Texas, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2018.

“I believe that in a representative democracy, those who serve in public office should do so for a time, not for a lifetime. And so I want you to know that my family and I have decided that I will not run for re-election next year. My time as a state representative and as speaker will end at the conclusion of my current term,” he announced via Facebook to his constituents.

You may recall that during last year’s legislative session, and the recent special session called by the governor, Straus beat back pressure from prominent politicians including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to bring a controversial anti-transgender “bathroom bill” to the floor of the state House for a vote.

Referencing the high suicide rates among the transgender community thanks to social judgments, the moderate Republican said at the time, “Tell the lieutenant governor I don’t want the suicide of a single Texan on my hands.”

Expect celebrations in the far-right realms of the Republican party as Straus has long been considered a target of the anti-LGBT Family Research Council and other hate groups.

Look for much jockeying in the Texas GOP  universe for the position of Speaker of the House in the coming months.

Kentucky: Judge Orders State To Pay Over $222K To Marriage Equality Attorneys

County Clerk Kim Davis

For a second time, a federal judge has ordered the state of Kentucky to pay over $222K to the attorneys who went to bat defending same-sex couples who were declined a marriage license by county clerk Kim Davis.

From CourtHouseNews.com:

In July, U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered Kentucky to pay $222,695 to the attorneys of April Miller and others, after they won a favorable judgment against Davis. Bunning also awarded an additional $2,008 in other costs.

Gov. Matt Bevin and Terry Manuel, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for the Libraries and Archives, appealed the ruling, claiming the fees should be assessed against Davis and the Rowan County Clerk’s Office.

The governor and commissioner, who were third-party defendants in the case, argued that Davis did not represent Kentucky when she acted against the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges because her behavior was not directed or approved by any state official.

Bunning once again found the argument unpersuasive and rejected the appeal on Monday.

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky is liable for plaintiffs’ attorneys’ fees and costs because defendant Kim Davis acted on behalf of the Commonwealth when she refused to issue marriage licenses,” the judge wrote in his 14-page decision.

Congratulations, Kentucky! Kim Davis cost you over $222K in her misguided and illegal activism.

Music Break: Leslie Ellis & Casey Kelly “We Came Close”

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of these two.

Leslie Ellis and Casey Kelly are such terrific artists, and I’ve loved Ellis’ version of “We Came Close” for years. This is the first time I’ve seen them perform the song on video.

Just gorgeous. And who among us hasn’t experienced a time that relates to these lyrics?

Find out more about the talented duo at their official website.

Republican Sen. Jeff Flake Announces He Won’t Seek Re-Election Due To Trump’s “Reckless, Outrageous, Undignified Behavior”

Sen. Jeff Flake, Republican senator from Arizona, just gave a breathtaking speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate announcing he will not seek re-election in 2018.

In doing so, he pointed to the “reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior” of Donald Trump as president.

Flake pretty much left it all out on the Senate floor as he called out the president as well as calling his fellow senators “complicit” in allowing Donald Trump to continue to debase the office of the presidency.

Read the full speech here, and watch excerpts below.

Excerpt From “George Michael: Freedom” Documentary – “Praying For Time”

Check out this excerpt from the documentary George Michael: Freedom where Elton John, James Corden and others discuss the brilliance and beauty of “Praying For Time.”

Michael personally worked on the documentary right up through December of last year before his death.

The track is from Michael’s iconic Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 which has been re-released as a deluxe set adding in tracks from his MTV Unplugged concert in October 1996.

You can watch George Michael: Freedom on Showtime.

Sen. Bob Corker: I Don’t Think There’s Any Question Donald Trump Is “Debasing The Nation”

Speaking to reporters this morning, Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee was asked by Mary K. Bruce of ABC News if he felt Donald Trump was “debasing” the United States with his behavior.

Corker was unequivocal in his response: “I don’t think there’s any question.”

In the same interview, Corker said he had hoped Trump would “rise to the occasion as president to lead our nation, instead of dividing it.”

Watch below.

In another interview with CNN, Corker had much more to say, including:

“I would hope the staff over there would figure out ways of controlling him when they know that everything he said today was absolutely untrue.”

“I think that he’s proven himself unable to rise to the occasion … I don’t think that that’s possible. He’s obviously not going to rise to the occasion as president.”

“The President has great difficulty with the truth. On many issues.”

“I don’t know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard, and debases our country in a way that he does, but he does.”

“I think world leaders are very aware that much of what he says is untrue.”

Clearly, the Trumpster was watching. Check out the Twitter rant below from Trump this morning.

But Corker won the exchange tweeting, “Same untruths from an utterly untruthful president.” #AlertTheDayCareStaff

The hashtag #AlertTheDayCareStaff immediately began trending on Twitter.

File this one under “Infighting is funny.” It’s obvious that Corker, who has announced he will not seek reelection next year, has zero fucks left to give about the Trump presidency.
