Broadway: Alex Newell & Cast Of Once On This Island Slay “Mama Will Provide”

One of my favoritest Broadway musicals ever, Once On This Island, is back on the Great White Way in a gorgeous new revival.

Check out Alex Newell (Glee) as “Asaka,” Mother Earth, singing “Mama Will Provide” with the luminous company on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The role, traditionally cast as a woman, is sung with vigor and warmth by Newell. Score a point for non-traditional casting that totally delivers.

The show tells the tale of “Ti Moune” who is sent on a journey by the gods of the island to prove the strength of love over death.

If you are in NYC, make sure you see it.

My longtime friends Norm Lewis (Tony Award nominee for Porgy & Bess) and T. Oliver Reid are both in the cast weaving their powerful gifts into the tapestry this is Once On This Island.

Bobsled push athlete Lou Moreira is not only a member of Team USA but a former Mr. Texas and saved a puppy during his time serving in the military in Afghanistan. Oh, he also has trouble finding pants that fit.

New Web Series Features Billy Porter Singing “Tiny Hands”

It’s a testement to the horrible flu I’ve been fighting all week long that I somehow missed this most fabulous new video from Broadway impresario Jordan Roth featuring Tony Award winner Billy Porter (Kinky Boots).

Launched this week, Roth’s comedic web series, “The Birds and the BS,” is intended to address the cultural coarsening of America under Donald Trump.

Roth told The New York Times, “We need a kids’ show for us, to remind ourselves of these basic human decencies in the complicated adult world that we now swim in, and if we can do that with a laugh and a catchy tune and a little bit of shock, then we might actually watch it, and then think about it.”

The video, which includes off-color language, features an animated character voiced by Billy Porter, an actor who won a Tony Award for his role in “Kinky Boots” (a show produced by Ms. Roth and housed in a theater owned by Jordan Roth). Mr. Porter’s animated avatar, shown alongside a sketch of Mr. Trump, says “even though they say he has tiny hands, they’re actually making fun of something else,” as an arrow points to the Trump image’s crotch.

But the animated Billy Porter then says there are better ways to criticize the president.

“We grown-ups should know better than to make fun of people’s appearances, even the people we hate,” Mr. Porter says. “There are far, far better, things to debase, like his flabby punctuation, comb-over obfuscation. It’s his shameful bigotries that look so dumpy in his khakis.”

In an interview, Mr. Porter said he agreed to participate as an expression of his opposition.

“It’s about the resistance,” he said. “James Baldwin says it’s the artist’s job to disturb the peace, and I take that very seriously. I’m not a community organizer, I’m not a politician, but with creative energy I can help change hearts and minds with my stuff.”

Fox News’ Judge Jeanine Blames Obama For Rob Porter Debacle

Fox News‘ Judge Jeanine Pirro began her show last night with a twisting rant intended to defend White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s handling of the Rob Porter resignation this week.

“Have you been tricked into thinking someone was an upstanding person only to find out that the person inside was totally different?” Pirro asked. She added, “It’s nothing new, it happens to all of us, all the time.”

After laying out her version of the Porter tale – she alleges no one in the White House had any idea there were domestic abuse issues in Porter’s file until Tuesday night – she summed up her defense of Kelly with the following:

“You want to stop a four-star general who is running the White House, who believes in chain of command, who makes a decision within 40 minutes, because you hate President Trump? Find another scapegoat. You might want to look at the last president.”

How President Obama factors into this I have no idea.

You can watch the segment below. I include the full video for context, but make sure you note the odd change in tone as she finishes with a cheery “And that’s my open.”

White House: Trump Has “Full Confidence” In Chief Of Staff John Kelly

(screen capture)

Donald Trump trotted out White House adviser Kellyanne Conway to defend this week’s debacle surrounding the resignation of White House staff secretary Rob Porter.

In the aftermath of Porter’s departure, questions linger about Chief of Staff John Kelly’s handling of the incident.

Conway made the round of the Sunday morning talk shows on ABC, CNN and Fox News.

Via The Washington Post:

Senior White House aides insisted Sunday that President Trump remains confident in Chief of Staff John F. Kelly amid staff turmoil and said the president is not looking to replace the retired four-star general hired six months ago with a mandate to corral chaos.

“I spoke with the president last night about this very issue, and he wanted me to reemphasize to everyone, including this morning, that he has full confidence in his current chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly, and that he is not actively looking for replacements,” White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

She added that Trump also remains confident in communications director Hope Hicks, a long-serving aide under scrutiny for her role in the White House response to spousal abuse allegations against former staff secretary Rob Porter, with whom she had a romantic relationship.

Porter resigned or was fired Wednesday, a day after Kelly had defended him as “a man of honor” in a statement in which Hicks apparently had a hand.

Conway got rather defensive when asked whether Donald Trump’s own accusers have had their “due process:”

Kentucky: Former Judge & Trump Campaign Chair Sentenced To 20 Years On Sex Charges

Former Judge Tim Nolan, who was Donald Trump’s campaign chair in Campbell County, has plead guilty to 21 counts of human trafficking, giving drugs and alcohol to minors and more.

According to court records, Nolan used drugs, threats of arrest and eviction to coerce women and girls under the age of 18 into sex acts.

In addition to 20 years in prison, Nolan is ordered to pay a $100,000 fine.

At his sentencing, he thanked his attorneys, the judge and a doctor who was involved in his case “who made me realize things.”

Nolan isn’t the first Trump campaign figure to go to prison over sex trafficking charges.

Last year, Oklahoma state Sen. Ralph Shortey, who served as Trump’s campaign chair in his state, was convicted on child prostituion charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Meet The 2018 Out Winter Olympians

Out U.S. Olympians – L to R – Adam Rippon, Brittany Bowe & Gus Kenworthy

With the 2018 Winter Olympics underway, the folks at OutSports.com have compiled a list of the 14 out athletes taking part in the games at PyeoungChang.

The list includes three Americans – freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, figure skater Adam Rippon and speedskater Brittany Bowe.

Brittany Bowe (U.S., speedskating): Bowe is a former inline skater who has excelled on the ice, setting world records and winning medals. She competed in Sochi in 2014 but did not medal. An NBC Olympics profile noted that Bowe is dating Dutch speedskater Manon Kamminga. “It’s nice being with somebody that has the same passion, same drive, same goals,” Bowe said. “It’s obviously difficult living on different sides of the world. But we’re both focused on our goal.”

Gus Kenworthy (U.S., slopestyle free skiing): Easily the most publicized LGBT athlete of the Olympics, Kenworthy (a 2014 silver medalist) is a strong medal contender. He has gotten numerous endorsements and is one of NBC’s faces of the Games.

Adam Rippon (U.S., figure skating): The “old man” of the U.S. skating team at 28, Rippon jokes that he is proud of his “sons” Nathan Chen (18) and Vincent Zhou (17). Rippon came out in 2015 and proudly wears the banner of being the first publicly gay figure skater. His social media is acerbic and witty and must-follow.

These games mark the first time there will be openly gay men competing in the Winter Olympics.

According to OutSports, the number of out Olympians tops the seven from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. In contrast, there were 56 out Olympians at the much larger Summer Olympics in 2016.

Note: there well may be other LGBTQ athletes at the Olympics this season, but this list only includes those who have publicly acknowledged being out.

Thanks to OutSports!

Music Video: Matt Zarley & Jeb Havens “Dear Future Husband”

Check out the sassy new music video from out singers Matt Zarley & Jeb Havens (both favorites here on The Randy Report) as they share their take on Meghan Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband.” Dig the awesome arrangement and tight harmonies. Totally fun. The duo recently debuted their new show “Works of Heart” in Puerto Vallarta and Los Angeles and plan to tour later this year. p.s. Jeb will be singing “now and forever husband” as he married his longtime bf, Steven, yesterday in Los Angeles. Congratulations to happy couple!

Trump Won’t Release Democratic Memo Because It’s “Very Political”

Last night, Donald Trump announced he would not allow the Democratic response memo from the House Intelligence Committee to be released.

Trump claimed the “very political” memo contained several classified/sensitive passages of material.

And yet, last week when the FBI and Justice Department raised the same concerns about the Nunes Memo, which Trump claimed “totally vindicated” him, Trump ignored those warnings.

This morning, Trump tweeted that he would consider releasing the Democratic memo if committee members would “re-do and send back in proper form.”
