Anti-Gay Bridal Shop Chooses To Close In Advance Of Impending LGBT Protections

It’s always interesting to see how folks on the other side of LGBT discrimination like to frame an issue to make themselves the victims.

In this article from Christian News, note how the writer says the owners of this Pennsylvania bridal shop declined “to assist a lesbian with her wedding.”

“Assisting” is also in the headline of the story.

The Christian owners of a bridal shop in Pennsylvania who have been receiving threats since declining to assist a lesbian with her wedding last July have decided to close their business due to fears of an impending ordinance that would require them to violate their faith, as well as the inability to market themselves in light of false negative reviews.

“The members of our town council have made it known they will pass an ordinance soon. We have chosen to close rather than be forced to go against our faith,” W.W. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsburg, co-owned by Victoria Miller and her three daughters, explained on social media on Sunday.

The boutique has discounted all wedding gowns to half price as the women plan to close their doors permanently on March 30.

As previously reported, the bridal shop first came under criticism in 2014 after Miller and her daughters declined to schedule a gown fitting for a lesbian and her partner.

“We feel we have to answer to God for what we do,” Miller told reporters at the time. “And providing those two girls dresses for a sanctified marriage would break God’s law.”

Now, “assisting” sounds like the owners of this dress shop would be deeply involved in the details of this couple’s wedding, doesn’t it?

I’m picturing designing, sewing, fittings, perhaps even dressing the brides on the day of the wedding…?

The article goes on to say the pending ordinance “would prohibit them from declining to take part in same-sex ceremonies.”

Take part?

In truth, they would have sold the bride a dress and done a fitting. That’s it.

Anti-LGBT bakers at least complain that the “creation” of wedding cakes for LGBT weddings requires their creative gifts in creating a cake.

This dress shop would have sold a dress. A dress they didn’t create.

You’ll note the article didn’t bother to interview anyone from the local LGBT community.

By the way, a crowdfunding campaign has been setup with a goal of $90,000 in hopes of another financial windfall as we’ve seen in similar situations.

To date, the campaign has raised less than $4,000.

Throwback Thursday: Betty Buckley “Amazing Grace”

It’s been quiet in the house lately.

Michael has been traveling with clients doing press in NYC, and with Bruno the wonder dog having crossed the rainbow bridge recently, I’ve been reflective of late.

My mind kept finding it’s way to this meditation on “Amazing Grace” from the brilliant Tony Award winner, Betty Buckley.

I’ve seen Ms. Betty perform live onstage countless times and it’s always a transformative experience.

Yes, everyone loves her huge show-stopping vocals in songs like “Memory,” “With One Look,” and “Meadowlark,” but her brilliance is revealed with equal ease in her quiet, pensive musical moments.

This performance is from her Stars and the Moon (Live at the Donmar) concert which, thankfully, was fully recorded for us all to have now and forever.

It’s not often that artistry of this depth can really shine through via a YouTube video, but as always, Betty is right in the center of the song’s emotional core.

While a “throwback Thursday” post is defined by looking back, I’d be remiss if I didn’t add here that Buckley has recently been announced to star in the upcoming national tour of Hello, Dolly! currently killing it on Broadway.

Happy Thursday, kids.

Trailer: Netflix’s “Lost In Space”

Netflix shares the first full trailer for it’s upcoming reboot of the 1960s sci-fi series, Lost In Space, due to drop on April 13.

I was a fan of the original back in the day as everything super-cool was about space and being an astronaut.

What’s funny is not knowing, when you’re a kid,  that the show was only a so-so hit running a few seasons. AND that the camp factor was so pronounced but it flew over our soon-to-be-gay heads.

Since then there’s been a couple of attempts to recycle the show including the 1998 movie with Matt LeBlanc which I thought was terrific but wasn’t that well-received.

Looking at this trailer they’ve really switched things up a lot, including casting Parker Posey in the role of “Dr. Smith.”

Take a look below, and be assured I’ll be checking it out on April 13.

Video: Baby Elephant Takes First Steps

In light of the Trump administration’s decision to end a ban on elephant trophies, folks on Twitter are encouraging people to call the White House.

Trump Administration ENDS the BAN on #Elephant Trophies! Please Help Protect Elephants by calling the @WhiteHouse at: 202-456-1111

And, as if you needed any other encouragement to make that call, just think on how the White House’s decision would affect this little guy.

NYT: Trump Has Asked Russian Probe Witnesses What Was Discussed With Special Counsel Investigators

The New York Times is reporting that Donald Trump has spoken to witnesses who have been questioned by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators.

In one episode, the president told an aide that the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, should issue a statement denying a New York Times article in January. The article said Mr. McGahn told investigators that the president once asked him to fire the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III. Mr. McGahn never released a statement and later had to remind the president that he had indeed asked Mr. McGahn to see that Mr. Mueller was dismissed, the people said.

In the other episode, Mr. Trump asked his former chief of staff, Reince Priebus, how his interview had gone with the special counsel’s investigators and whether they had been “nice,” according to two people familiar with the discussion.

The episodes demonstrate that even as the special counsel investigation appears to be intensifying, the president has ignored his lawyers’ advice to avoid doing anything publicly or privately that could create the appearance of interfering with it.

Legal experts said Mr. Trump’s contact with the men most likely did not rise to the level of witnesses tampering. But witnesses and lawyers who learned about the conversations viewed them as potentially a problem and shared them with Mr. Mueller.

When you’re being investigated and it’s revealed you’re asking what was discussed in testimony, it can appear that folks are trying to “get their stories straight.”

Geez, you’d think by now he’d know how to be a better criminal…

New NBC Series “Champions” Features 16-Year-Old Out Actor J.J. Totah

Andy Favreau as Matthew, J.J. Totah as Michael, Anders Holm as Vince

Mindy Kaling and her co-producer Charlie Grandy (The Mindy Project; The Office) will see the premiere of their latest TV series, Champions, debut this Thursday night on NBC.

In the show, Brooklyn gym owner Vince (Anders Holm) sees his swinging bachelor life come to a halt when an old high-school fling, Priya (played by Kaling in a guest appearance) arrives from Cleveland with Michael, the 15-year-old son he’s never met.

Michael (played by out actor J.J. Totah) has always dreamed of living in New York City and attending its famed performing arts high school; and mother Priya has no issue getting dad Vince and his not-so-bright bro, Matthew (Andy Favreau) to take over the parenting duties in making Michael’s dream a reality.

“Mindy wanted to tell a fresh New York story,” Grandy told TV Insider. “So we came up with a gay, half-Indian teen from the Midwest.”

In addition to his breakout performance in Other People, you may remember the 16-year-old actor from appearances on Glee, 2 Broke Girls, Sophia The First, and in the super-hero flick Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Champions premieres Thursday, March 8, 8:30/7:30c on NBC

Watch the trailer below.

Ohio Man Arrested After Threatening To Kill “85 Faggots At A Gay Club”

Me’Shach Israel-Miller

An Ohio man has been arrested for “aggravated menacing” after threatening to kill “85 faggots at a gay club” on Grindr.

From the Columbus Division of Police Facebook page:

27-year-old Me’Shach Israel-Miller was arrested last night at his southeast Columbus home & charged with Inducing Panic & Aggravated Manacing.

On Thursday, March 1, 2018, CPD became aware that there had been a threat made on the social metworking app Grindr that was directed towards the LGBTQ community.

The suspect told another user he was going to kill him and “85 faggots at a gay club.”

The victim posted screenshots of the threat on Facebook causing it to go viral.

CPD began investigating the threat immediately.

Sgt. Nick Konves, CPD’s LGBT Diversity/Inclusion Liaison, says he will be reaching out to the prosecutor’s office to look at the filing of the Columbus hate crime statue.

“The LGBT community asked that I express their appreciation for the extra resources from Zones 4 & 5 that were placed in the Short North this weekend due to the threat,” said Sgt. Konves.

Glad to see the police respond so thoroughly. In the aftermath of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, threats like this are not acceptable.

Hope Hicks Told House Intel Committee Her Email Had Been Hacked

Former White House communications director Hope Hicks apparently told members of the House Intelligence Committee last week that one of her email accounts had been hacked.

From NBC News:

Under relatively routine questioning from Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., about her correspondence, Hicks indicated that she could no longer access two accounts: One she used as a member of President Donald Trump’s campaign team and a personal account, according to four people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the closed meeting of the Intelligence Committee was supposed to remain private.

Hicks, who portrayed herself as not savvy in matters of technology, told lawmakers that one of the accounts was hacked, according to two sources who were in the room. It is unclear if Hicks was referring to a campaign or personal account.

NBC News goes on to note that Hicks did not offer when or why her accounts might have been hacked. And since Hicks was appearing before the committee voluntarily, it seems none of the lawmakers asked those follow-up questions.

I’m guessing it was during the same period of questioning that Hicks admitted to telling “white lies” for Donald Trump.
