Sarah Palin NOT running for President 2012

Darn! Think of how much fun it would have been to watch the GOP primaries!

The former half-term governor of Alaska released a statement to her “followers” this evening. It said, in part:

After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States. As always, my family comes first and obviously Todd and I put great consideration into family life before making this decision. When we serve, we devote ourselves to God, family and country. My decision maintains this order.

My decision is based upon a review of what common sense Conservatives and Independents have accomplished, especially over the last year. I believe that at this time I can be more effective in a decisive role to help elect other true public servants to office – from the nation’s governors to Congressional seats and the Presidency. We need to continue to actively and aggressively help those who will stop the “fundamental transformation” of our nation and instead seek the restoration of our greatness, our goodness and our constitutional republic based on the rule of law.

You can read the whole statement here.

I, personally, didn’t think she would run this election cycle. She stands to lose too much money AND she would have to answer to SOMEONE. As we’ve seen, the former half-term governor likes to comment from the sidelines (or the peanut gallery) with no responsibility. Plus, she likes all that money. President of the United States would be a big cut in pay for her and the Palin brood.

Tune in to watch her play “king maker” in the GOP primaries.

Ever buy a Groupon or Daily Deal that’s all the rage? Read this.

Here’s a story I think a lot of economy-minded folks can learn a bit from.  At least I did.

Every now and then, I get emails for a Groupon offer, or from some other companies now offering deals and calling them “Daily Deals” or some such name.  And a few times, I’ve purchased the deal.  Seemed like a good value, was something I would normally buy or want to spurge on, and in these tighter economic times, I saw the point.

For instance, a few months ago a deal came in from a company called “Travelzoo” that offered a dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant here in Las Vegas for a $49 purchase price.  The package was valued at $107.

I figured some night when Michael and I were down at the Strip and wanted to eat someplace nice we would use it.  It had a four month time limit before it expired.

Now here’s the interesting part of the story.  On September 24th – literally the day after it expired – I remembered it.  Darn it!  Expired!  Shoot!  Doh!

I figured, well, “don’t tell Michael because you just threw away $49.”  I hate to waste anything.

But then I got to reading the fine print and here’s something I think a LOT of people don’t know: even if expired, most companies like Groupon, and in this case Travelzoo, require the merchant to honor at least the amount you ACTUALLY PAID  for the voucher!

I called the restaurant, and both the hostess and the manager who got on the phone said “yeah, those deals are expired – we’re not taking those anymore.”

I wrote Travelzoo and they wrote me within a day and said “the Travelzoo terms that the merchant signed that govern the merchant’s obligations explicitly state that the paid portion of the voucher never expires. That means that merchants must accept the vouchers, even after the promotional period has expired, to the full extent of the amount you paid for the voucher.”

When I called the restaurant back to relay this info, the manager basically played a bit dumb and said “well, that’s up to interpretation of the law, and I’m not a lawyer.”

Sooooooo, being married to a publicist, what did I do next? Because Michael has contacts at every news station in town, I mentioned this to one of the leading news anchors and “consumer advocates” whom we know, Tricia Kean. Tricia is THE person to call when you think your rights as a consumer are being abused.

Tricia immediately took the details from me, saw that I was being ripped off and said “this would make a great story!”

Needless to say, this morning I received a call from the general manager of the restaurant saying he had “done some investigating” and “of course, we would be happy to honor the face value of the voucher you have” – which was all I was looking for. I wasn’t looking to have the expiration of the “promotion” extended, but just have the fine print of the deal honored.

It turns out from some internet research I did that the Obama ‘Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act (or Credit Card Act) of 2009′ states that “gift cards” have an expiration date 5 years from the initial purchase date regardless of what a vendor states. Well, this means that a Groupon coupon (or similar instrument) is considered a “gift card”! If you read the fine print at the bottom of each Groupon coupon, it will state that a vendor can honor the value of the Groupon deal (their choice) or they must at least honor the price you paid for the Groupon coupon (or similar kind of deal).

So it’s a happy ending here.  And more importantly I wanted folks to know this just in case you, too, have an expired “daily deal” voucher laying around.  At the very least you haven’t lost the money you paid.

In the end, it actually kind of makes the deals better.  Even if the promotion expires, you still have 5 years to use the money you actually spent.

Just wanted to share…

Approval of Congress at all-time low

Whether Republican, Democrat or independent, more Americans disapprove of Congress than at any point in more than two decades of Washington Post-ABC News polling.

Just 14 percent of the public approves of the job Congress is doing, according to the latest poll. That is lower than just before the 1994, 2006 and 2010 elections, when the majority party was on the verge of losing power in the House.

For most it’s not just a casual dislike of Congress: Sixty-two percent say they “strongly disapprove” of congressional job performance. An additional 20 percent “somewhat” disapprove.

Obama’s overall approval rating slipped to 42 percent now, with 54 percent disapproving of his job performance.

But the president’s new jobs package, which is supported by a narrow majority of the public, has bolstered his position on the issue. He now holds a 49 to 34 percent advantage over congressional Republicans when it comes to the public’s trust on creating jobs. That is a change from September, when they were evenly split at 40 percent each.

New Music: Scotty McCreery “Clear As Day”

The latest American Idol releases his new CD this week.

America fell in love with Scotty McCreery in 2011 when he appeared on American Idol and immediately made a name for himself with his deep and undeniably country voice. In May, he won Season Ten of American Idol when a record-breaking 122.4 million votes were cast for the finale and nearly 39 million people tuned in to see the winner’s name announced.

The album’s debut single, “I Love You This Big,” became a Top 15 hit and enjoyed the highest-charting debut for a new artist since at least 1984, while the video for the song hit No. 1 in just a week after its release.

He recorded his debut album while starring in the American Idols Live! Tour, which Pollstar ranked as one of the nation’s Top 15 tours.

After repeal of DADT, large majority supports gays in military

Just a few weeks after the implementation of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a majority of Americans say they support gays and lesbians serving openly in the military, according to a new CBS News poll.

According to the CBS News poll, 68 percent of Americans said they support gay and lesbians’ rights to serve openly. Fifty percent said they “strongly” favored the idea.

Moreover, although many national Republicans leaders were against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” more Republicans surveyed favor the idea of allowing gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces openly than oppose it.

The poll shows that 48 percent of Republicans overall think gays and lesbians should be able to serve openly; 28 percent of those people said they favored the idea strongly.

Meanwhile, 41 percent of all Republicans opposed allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly- twelve percent of whom opposed the idea strongly, and 29 percent of whom opposed it only somewhat.

Repeal of the 1993 law, which said gays could serve only if they kept their sexual orientations private, became official on September 20, 2011.

Log Cabin Republicans respond to Herman Cain’s claim that sexuality is a choice

R. Clark Cooper

“If Herman Cain truly wants to see the science proving that sexual orientation is not a choice, Log Cabin Republicans would be happy to show it to him. The claim that a person chooses to be gay or lesbian has been discredited by every major professional medical organization, starting with the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association. An individual’s orientation is no more a choice than the color of his skin or whether he is left-handed, and too many people have been hurt because of failed attempts to change the way they were born.” – via press release from Log Cabin Republicans head R. Clark Cooper.

Hank Williams Jr – Someone wants back on Monday Night Football

As you may recall, on Fox & Friends Monday, Williams compared the round of golf that President Obama played this summer with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to “Hitler playing golf with [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu.” He also referred to Obama and Vice President Biden as “the enemy.”

Tuesday, Hank posted two statements on his website. The first said:

“Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme — but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me — how ludicrous that pairing was. They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President.

“Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists — but there’s never a backlash — no outrage to those comparisons… Working class people are hurting — and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job – it makes a whole lot of us angry. Something has to change. The policies have to change.”

The second statement read:

“I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best or Worst of me. The thought of the Leaders of both Parties Jukin and High Fiven on a Golf course, while so many Families are Struggling to get by simply made me Boil over and make a Dumb statement and I am very Sorry if it Offended anyone. I would like to Thank all my supporters. This was Not written by some Publicist.”

Woman Wins $15M After Clerk Sells Her Wrong Lottery Ticket

Kathy Scruggs of Lithonia, Ga., has won $15.1 million from the Powerball lottery.

And as it turns out, she didn’t even intend to buy a ticket for that game.

“I asked for a Mega Millions ticket, and the lady gave me a Powerball ticket,” the 44-year-old Scruggs says, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I just took it anyway. So I bought Powerball and Mega Millions.”

The jackpot was worth $25 million. According to Georgia Lottery officials, “Scruggs selected the cash option and will receive $15,124,017 before taxes.”

The story’s even more remarkable, though: Scruggs has been out of work several months. “I’ve been looking and looking and looking,” she tells the AJC. Now, she says, “I’m going to build my mom and grandmother a home” and plans to create foundations to help the homeless and give dental care to the poor.

Democrat wins governorship in West Virginia

Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin beat back a torrent of late Republican attacks linking him to President Obama to win the West Virginia governorship Tuesday night.

Tomblin, a 36-year politician who had served as acting governor since Joe Manchin left the governorship for the Senate last fall, defeated Republican drilling executive Bill Maloney in a contest that became nationalized in its closing days .

With 81 percent of precincts reporting, Tomblin led Maloney 49 percent to 47 percent.

Maloney fought back from what was once a 30-point race to narrow the contest in recent weeks, with the help of nearly $3.5 million in television ads from the Republican Governors Association. The onslaught of commercials — including the final salvo linking Tomblin to “Obamacare” — clearly did damage to Tomblin’s image, but did not prove to be the death blow that some Democrats had feared.

A 30-second spot charging Tomblin with helping to implement “Obamacare” rotated heavily in the Mountain State this weekend, including during prime slots in the pricey Washington, D.C., market, which covers just a few thousand voters in the state’s eastern panhandle.

But Maloney underperformed in that area, taking only 49 percent in Jefferson County, the easternmost county in the state.
