Ohio: Former GOP Attorney General Jim Petro supports marriage equality

Jim Petro, former Attorney General for Ohio, said Monday that he supports an effort to overturn the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, contending the prohibition fosters intolerance and creates a roadblock to diversity.

The Ohio Republican says banning same-sex marriage sends a bad message to companies that might look to hire employees who could be LGBT:

Ohio’s economic well-being “will depend on its welcoming nature,” Petro said at a news conference with officials from FreedomOhio, the group collecting signatures to put the issue on the Nov. 2014 ballot. “More and more public officials will recognize the need for true equality.”

Petro said when he was asked to support gay marriage, he “quickly and without hesitation said ‘I’m all for it.’ ” He said he will be active in the 2014 campaign and hopes more Republicans join him

385,245 valid signatures of registered Ohio voters from at least 44 of 88 counties on a petition by July 3, 2014, to qualify for next year’s general election ballot.

Ohio passed it’s constitutional amendment, which limits marriage to one man and one woman, in 2004 by 62 percent of Ohio voters.

Texas: Gov. Bang Bang will not seek reelection

Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced today that he will not seek reelection.

“The time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership,” he said at a rally in San Antonio. “Today, I’m announcing I will not seek reelection as governor of Texas.”

Perry has served as governor since 2000, when then-Gov. George W. Bush (R) became president. Perry was elected to full terms in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

Perry also alluded to a potential 2016 presidential run, saying he will “pray and reflect and work to determine my own future path.”

Pat Robertson says he’d like a “Vomit” button on Facebook for same-sex couples

Responding to a viewer who wondered whether it was sinful to “Like” Facebook photos of same-sex couples, Pat Robertson said that Facebook needs a “Vomit” button for such pictures:

“You’ve got a couple of same-sex guys kissing, do you like that? Well that makes me want to throw up. To me I would punch ‘Vomit’ not ‘Like’ but they don’t give you that option on Facebook,” he said.

NYC: Man electrocuted by urinating on subway third rail

Wow.  I’d say something like “every NY-ers nightmare” except most NY-ers doesn’t urinate on the subway tracks…

From the New York Post:

A drunken man was electrocuted and killed relieving himself on the third rail in Brooklyn this morning, sources said.

Matthew Zeno, 30, was walking with a friend along the tracks for the southbound G train around 3:10 a.m., at Union Avenue and Broadway in Williamsburg when the horrific accident occurred, cops said. His 26-year-old pal tried saving him and was also shocked, police added.

The friend was able to flag down MTA workers, who in turn called for help, sources said.

Both men were rushed to Woodhull Hospital where Zeno died and the second man was listed in stable condition.

Openly gay pro bowler Scott Norton nominated for ESPY Award

Professional Bowler Scott Norton has become the first openly gay male to be nominated for ESPN’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Award. Norton, who came out publicly in 2011, has been nominated for the Best Bowler ESPY.

From Outsports:

“After such a monumental week for LGBT rights, what an incredible feeling to be a part of something to take us a step even further towards equality,” Norton told Outsports. “I am so excited to be the first of what I hope will be a long line of world-class openly gay male athletes nominated for this prestigious award.”

Norton kissed his partner, Craig Woodward, after a tournament earlier this year, believed to be the first celebratory “gay kiss” ESPN has ever aired.

While no gay man has ever been nominated for an ESPY either before or after coming out publicly, several out lesbians have been nominated for ESPY Awards in the past. This year, Brittney Griner has been nominated for Best Female Athlete and for Best Female College Athlete.

If you would like to help Norton and Griner win their respective ESPYs, you can vote HERE.

Olympic gymnast Louis Smith on the cover of Gay Times Magazine

Silver-medal Olympic gymnast Louis Smith hits the cover of the August issue of Gay Times in naught but an attention-grabbing light blue speedo.

In his interview – yes, there are articles to read, not just pictures – Smith addresses the topic of gay sportsmen who are still afraid to come out due to the persecution they would suffer for failing to live up to the expectations of being a straight man. Except for gymnastics. In gymnastics, “you’re always wearing a leotard.”

He thinks gay people should be allowed to marry too:

“What is ‘natural’? If someone says to you ‘act normal’ – what is ‘normal’? You can’t be defined. If you fall in love with someone you fall in love with someone.”

The latest issue of Gay Times is available for digital download.
