Elisabeth Hasselbeck heading to Fox & Friends after rumors of ABC contract not being renewed

The New York Post is reporting that conservative chair warmer for ABC’s THE VIEW will be leaving her long standing job to share the couch with Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade of FOX & FRIENDS.

FOX News Chairman & CEO Roger Ailes announced, “Elisabeth’s warm and engaging personality made her a star on “The View”. She has proven to be an excellent conversationalist and I am certain she will make a great addition to our already successful morning franchise.”

Rumors were running rampant earlier this year that Hasselbeck’s contract at ABC was not going to be renewed.

She replaces current FOX & FRIENDS co-host Gretchen Carlson who will begin hosting her own one-hour daytime show this fall.

Jenny McCarthy and Brooke Shields have been mentioned as possible replacements for Hasselbeck.

ACLU files marriage equality lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit today in Pennsylvania on behalf of 23 residents of the state who are seeking marriage equality. The lawsuit is the latest to be filed in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decisions in favor of same-sex marriage in June.

The group of plaintiffs, which includes 10 couples, two minor children of those couples, and one widow who recently lost her partner of 29 years, argue Pennsylvania’s own Defense of Marriage Act violates both the fundamental right to marry and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The ACLU also announced today that it will amend an existing adoption lawsuit in North Carolina, and will file a marriage lawsuit in Virginia as co-counsel with the ACLU of Virginia and Lambda Legal in the coming weeks.

The Talk: Julie Chen discusses “Big Brother” racist/homophobic comments

On The Talk today, Julie Chen, host of CBS’ Big Brother discussed the recent spate of racist and homophobic remarks happening on the hit reality show:

“When I first found out that Aaryn, who is a 22-year-old girl, made anti-gay, anti-black, and anti-Asian comments, I have to be honest, you know… the Asian ones hit me the most. I heard about her describing Asians as ‘squinty-eyed’ and ‘go make a bowl of rice.’ She said that about Helen, who is Chinese and in the house. It stung. I took it personally. I’m a human being.

“And the really sad part was, it took me back to the 70’s when I was growing up in Queens and when I was 7 years old getting bullied, being called a ‘chink’, and people pulling their eyes. But it took me back so many years, and I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I haven’t heard comments like that’ — year is 2013. And then I felt ignorant. There are still people in the country who feel that way and act that way? Yes there is, yes there is. And afterwards, it just made me sad because she’s 22 and she’s college educated.”

Chen says that CBS made the decision to air the remarks because it is now developing into a storyline of sorts on Big Brother:

“CBS and Big Brother showed it because it is now driving a story. It is now affecting how the other players want to see her gone. You know, if it didn’t drive story, and it didn’t have a dynamic on what it is to the elements of the game, it maybe, you can’t just put it in there and say, ‘Judge her, everybody.’ It has to have to do with the game and the rules of the game…She and the other houseguests have no idea that it has made national headlines.”

TRUE BLOOD – Jason Stackhouse’s shave scene with Ben

If you haven’t caught this week’s True Blood (Season 6, episode 4 – “What Dreams May Come”), you missed the very steamy scene between Ryan Kwanten’s “Jason Stackhouse” and new guy on the block “Ben” played by Rob Kazinsky.

If you saw it, enjoy it again here.

If not, I won’t spoil the twist at the end.

I do love Ryan’s awkward/naive thing he brings to “Jason.” I recently met Ryan and he’s a cool guy, and yes, a quite a bit smarter…

Possible campaign finance investigation for Rick Santorum and NOM

A complaint filed by former GOP presidential candidate Fred Karger triggered a possible campaign finance investigation for Rick Santorum, NOM and Bob Vander Plaats:

The Federal Election Commission is asking former presidential candidate Rick Santorum, Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats and an anti-gay marriage organization to tell the agency why it should not investigate an allegation that they violated campaign finance limits during the last election.

The complaint, brought by Fred Karger, a gay rights activist who ran a quixotic campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, accuses Santorum of coordinating with the National Organization for Marriage to pay $1 million to Vander Plaats to endorse him, with the money eventually going for ads backing Santorum. That would be a violation of campaign finance law.

The move by the FEC is routine when a complaint meets basic requirements.

In June, the FEC sent letters to Karger and the accused: Santorum, Vander Plaats and NOM. The three now can respond to the FEC with reasons why it should not investigate the matter. “This letter signals the beginning of the beginning,” said Craig Engle a campaign finance attorney at Arent Fox who is not connected to the case.

Civil unions are now officially NOT equal to marriage

The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration will not extend federal-worker benefits to domestic partners under the recent Supreme Court ruling that repealed part of the Defense of Marriage Act, meaning the government will treat civil unions differently than legal same-sex marriages.

And so, couples who are not legally married “will remain ineligible for most federal benefits programs.” However, any existing benefits provided to domestic partners will remain intact, OPM said.

That being said, same sex couples living anywhere in the U.S. will qualify for federal-employee benefits as long as they hold marriage licenses from any of the 13 states that recognize same-sex marriage, as well as from the District of Columbia, which has also legalized such unions.

Sounds like bad news for folks with civil unions, but there’s a bright side.

Civil unions were created as the “separate but equal” answer to same-sex marriage after the passage of DOMA.  Since civil unions don’t hold federal status, clearly they don’t come close to “equal.”  Such inequality could help four states (Hawaii, Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey which currently offer civil unions) move towards marriage equality.

For example, in New Jersey, the state Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples deserve complete equality, so civil unions offered there are now a violation of the state’s constitution.
