Looking Back As Our Tyler Crosses The Rainbow Bridge

Michael and I helped our prettiest, Tyler, cross the rainbow bridge Friday evening. She was diagnosed with Cushings Disease last week and we started medications, but they overwhelmed her causing her to throw up for about four days. We stopped them, with vet’s advice, hoping they’d work out of her system and she would bounce back. But by Friday, she hadn’t taken any water or food for three days. No treats, nothing. At sixteen and a half, she was very weak, and we had to be ‘the adults.’ Sad doesn’t begin to describe where we are emotionally. Numb is about all I can come up with. When we moved to Las Vegas 15 years ago, in the spring of 2004, the house was full of dogs.

When Michael and I met, he had Olivia the chihuahua, named after iconic pop goddess, Olivia Newton-John. About a year and a half after I moved from New York City to Los Angeles to be with Michael, he gifted me Sabrina at Christmas 1997.

In 2002, my friend David and I walked into a pet store on the Upper East Side of NYC, and I met Bruno the wonder dog for the first time. ‘It only takes a moment, for your eyes to meet and then…’ While I played with him, David went to the front of the store and paid for ‘the Brun,’ who would become my best friend.

In spring 2003, the night before Bruno was going to be fixed, he clearly sensed ‘a disturbance in the force.’ We heard yelping and ran to the kitchen where he and Sabrina looked like guilty teenagers. Sixty-two days later, their three puppies – Tyler, Bandit, and Bear – were born. I was on tour with Chicago the Musical (for a change). Michael and I agreed we’d give two puppies to friends and keep one. But when I returned home, there were still six dogs at Casa Caprio. So, life went on – with six small dogs and two adults making up our unexpectedly large family. And it just worked.

As I mentioned, we moved to Vegas in 2004. Olivia passed from old age in the summer of 2005, and Sabrina – the mama – passed in 2010. Bandit (who knew he was a supermodel) crossed over in February 2017 after a six-month cancer journey.
Bandit, who always knew deep inside he was truly a super-model
The Brun, my bestie, left us a year later in February 2018, after a long bout with Cushing’s disease. And now, Tyler joins her dad, mom, brother and Olivia. Bear, who entered the world last on July 19, 2003, is still with us. He licked Tyler’s face after she passed and has spent the day on the pillow where Tyler always slept.

Circle of life. This is what happens. We certainly get more from them than we could ever give back. It’s definitely been a rough day. Tyler’s passing has triggered a trip down memory lane, and I’m struck by how quickly a generation has passed as this family graced us with their lives. It feels like this amazing doggy adventure has gone by in the blink of an eye. As I walked through the living room today I was keenly aware that I wasn’t being followed by a herd of dachshunds. Thank god for the advent of phone cameras and video. They all continue to live so vibrantly, not just in my memory, but on my computer screen in bold, bright living color. I step back and say thank you for the blessing, joy, laughter, and love from these spirited, furry family members. We are sad but immensely grateful. Tyler, “the prettiest,” leaves her paw print on our hearts forever.

Halloween PSA Reminds Parents – It’s All Just Pretend

As we head into the Halloween holiday with all its spooky, dress-up fun for everyone, I thought this PSA (which debuted in 2017) makes for a timely #ThrowbackThursday post. Boys and girls all over the country will get excited this evening about dressing up as their favorite super-hero, comic book character or cartoon persona for Halloween. And in this day and age, some of those choices might surprise parents. This public service announcement serves as a touching blueprint for moms and dads who might feel concern as their kids go house to house on Halloween as, say, “Batman” and “Wonder Woman.” In the video, two children oversee their parents carving pumpkins with the logos of their favorite superheroes before running up to their rooms to suit up for a night of Halloween fun. The two-minute video continues as the parents dutifully follow the mighty duo as they make their way from house to house in the neighborhood. We see one neighbor thanking the tiny tots for “keeping our streets safe” as the parents watch from the curb. At the end of the clip, mom and dad tuck the kids into bed and there’s an important reveal. One of the co-writers for the spot, Alexander Day, told HuffPost at the time, “Halloween can be a time people can express themselves in a certain way and not be attacked for it.”

For those who get concerned about so-called “gender norms,” just remember – the kids are pretending no matter who or what they choose to dress as. And that goes for the adults who enjoy the holiday as well. Here’s hoping everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.

Watching Chris Hemsworth’s Shirtless Workout Made Me Sweat

If you thought ‘Thor’ could hurl a hammer, check out shirtless Avengers star Chris Hemsworth sling some weights around in a grassy field. Now, to be fair, there’s a very good reason why Hemsworth is shirtless. You see, it spontaneously burst into flames. “It was so hot my shirt literally burst into flames,” wrote Hemsworth. “Luckily I was wearing my favourite pair of fire retardant shorts.” “Give this circuit a go 6 times through Centrfit,” he added referencing his fitness app which boasts training programs and tips from Hemsworth’s own fitness team. The circuit consists of bent-over rows, a farmer’s carry, bicep curls combined with overhead press, and topped off with a sprint. Do that six times and we’re pretty sure we’d burst into flames as well.

The post has been liked over 3.2 million times at this writing. The 36-year-old actor is known for sharing his circuit workouts via Instagram. Last month, Hemsworth shared this challenging bit of gym time wrestling some iron with trainers Luke Zocchi and Jorge Blanco. Now, when the god of thunder is out of breath, you know it’s intense.

We may (or may not) have seen the final Avengers movie with Avengers: Endgame, but Hemsworth will return as the thunder god in Thor: Love and Thunder in 2021. One thing is for sure: Hemsie is definitely going to be in tip-top, god-like shape. Here’s one more workout from our hero – this one is called the Devil’s Workout. I’d get sweaty with these guys, how about you?

50 Years Ago Today…

My mother, Joyce Ann Slovacek
I found out an old friend is coping with a cancer journey today. We began chatting on FB, then moved to actual phone calls. Having done my cancer journey in 2009, I always stop to swap stories from the chemo front lines… It’s just a thing you do when you’ve been there. Along the messages today, I looked up and saw it was October 13. That date…it always sticks in my mind. And then I recall – my mother passed away on October 13, 1969, from cancer. Fifty years ago today. I was 6-years-old at the time. So many amazing women were sent by the universe to raise me. And I’m cognizant of that fact every day. I want to be clear that this isn’t meant as a morose kind of post. Just a memory. The reason why we have photographs. I do have fleeting memories of my mother, way back then…and a couple of photos 🙂 She looks like she’d totally be sassy, amiright?

Observing Memorial Day 2019

Wishing everyone a great holiday weekend, and I hope that folks take some time out to remember why we celebrate this day as a nation. It's not "National BBQ Day" you know. Think of those we've lost who stood up for, and made possible, our freedoms and liberty here in the U.S.

Wishing everyone a great holiday weekend, and I hope that folks take some time out to remember why we celebrate this day as a nation. It’s not “National BBQ Day” you know. Think of those we’ve lost who stood up for, and made possible, our freedoms and liberty here in the U.S. A few facts about Memorial Day: • Memorial Day is a federal holiday that occurs every year on the last Monday of May. • Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, formerly known as Decoration Day. • Memorial Day typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. • Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. The average age of fallen U.S. soldiers is 26½. The New York Times reports that Arlington National Cemetery is running out of room and may need to consider new rules that may turn away eligible soldiers.

The First Memorial Day

How the black community brought about the first Memorial Day in 1865, then called "Decoration Day."

Via Think Progress:

According to Professor David Blight of Yale University, the first Memorial Day took place on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC, after a group of African-Americans, mostly former slaves, gave 257 Union soldiers a proper burial.

The black community in Charleston then consecrated the new cemetery with “an unforgettable parade of 10,000 people,” led by 3,000 black school children.

It was initially called “Decoration Day.”
