Continuing his trade war temper tantrum with Canada, Donald Trump signed an executive order today changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
The lake has been called Lake Ontario since at least the 1600s. The name comes from an Iroquoian word, oniatarí:io, meaning “lake of shining waters.” It predates the founding of both countries. The Canadian province of Ontario was named after the lake, not the other way around.
For the record, approximately 53% of Lake Ontario is in Canadian territory and roughly 47% is in United States territory.

The order directs federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in all official documents and records, similar to his attempt to unilaterally rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” last year.
While the president has the authority to direct how the U.S. government recognizes the names of places and landmarks, he can’t force Canada or citizens on either side of the border to follow his preferred labels.
But good to know he’s laser-focused on the issues that matter most to Americans.
