The House of Representatives has voted to formally change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” per the wishes of Donald Trump. Because they don’t have anything more pressing to attend to…? The legislation passed 211-206, with one Republican – Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) – breaking rank and voting with Democrats against the bill.
From Axios:
The four-page measure states that “any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the ‘Gulf of America’.”
It directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to oversee the name change for federal government documents and maps across federal agencies.
It was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — which some Democrats cited as a factor in their party voting uniformly against it.
Democrats railed against the vote, with Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.) labeling it the “dumbest bill brought to the floor during the six years I’ve served in this Congress.”
It’s unclear if the Senate will even vote on the bill.
I’m on my way to the House floor to vote against what is possibly the dumbest bill we could be voting on right now: renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. This is what House Republicans choose to focus on? In this economy?! pic.twitter.com/ala6Sxq4L9

Voted NO on the Republican bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
And made clear on the House Floor that America is not down with MTG. [image or embed] — Hakeem Jeffries (@hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social) May 8, 2025 at 8:25 AM
