Trump/Putin Summit Concludes Early With No Agreement Announced

The much-ballyhooed summit meeting between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended after less than 3 hours today with no agreement announced on any issue, including ending the war in Ukraine.

Russian officials had indicated they expected the meeting at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage to last six or seven hours.

From the New York Times:

Trump gave vague but positive assessment that progress had been made, saying, “Many points were agreed to, and there are just a very few that are left.” But he did not describe those points, or even specify that they had to do with Ukraine.

“We’ve made some headway,” he said. “So there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

It spoke volumes that Trump emerged from the meeting with very little to say about what was achieved, while Putin had much to say.

Earlier Friday, aboard Air Force One on the way to Alaska, Mr. Trump told reporters: “I want to see a cease-fire rapidly. I don’t know if it’s going to be today. But I’m not going to be happy if it’s not today.”

But beyond the vague comments, it was clear that the two men had failed to reach an agreement even on the starting point that Europe and Ukraine — and Trump himself — have said is necessary: A temporary cease-fire that would allow negotiations on everything from territorial boundaries to security guarantees to take place.

It goes without saying that it’s highly unusual for Trump to hold a press conference without taking any questions. That in itself is telling about what “progress” was or was not accomplished.
