In an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network, Donald Trump falsely claimed that a majority of transgender youth regret transitioning.

The remark was spurred by CBN personality David Brody, who began by declaring “This transgender movement is out of control. Joe Biden thinks there’s at least three genders, maybe more…” He then asked Trump if he saw “this transgender movement as evil, unbiblical? A lot of people say this is not the way it should be.”

“That’s not the way it should be – that’s for sure,” said Trump with a smirk. “It is a terrible thing. I mean, especially when you’re taking children who don’t even have this period to form.”

“And you know, in many cases, I hear 60 percent of the cases, later in life, they say, ‘Why did they do this to me?’ Sixty percent,” Trump declared without citing any scientific source. “No, I think it’s a terrible thing.”

Interestingly, a study published on Wednesday in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, indicates the former guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

From the New York Times:

The data come from the Trans Youth Project, a well-known effort following 317 children across the United States and Canada who underwent a so-called social transition between ages of 3 and 12. Participants transitioned, on average, at age 6.5.

The vast majority of the group still identified with their new gender five years later, according to the study, and many had begun hormonal medications in adolescence to prompt biological changes to align with their gender identities.

The study found that 2.5 percent of the group had reverted to identifying as the gender they were assigned at birth.

Coleen Williams, a psychologist who works with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Gender Multispecialty Service, which treats transgender kids, called the study “incredibly timely … and sorely needed.”

“If you’re in the trenches doing this work day-in and day-out with trans kiddos and their families, this is what we see,” Williams told the Associated Press. “A majority of transgender youth and kids who make a social transition remain living in their affirmed gender.”

Trump went on to posit that Walt Disney was “looking down and he’s not happy.” Trump drew a picture of Disney wondering, “Whatever happened to my beautiful Magic Kingdom?”

The comment was probably prompted by the Disney company speaking out against Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law after it was passed. The new law prohibits elementary school teachers from discussing LGBTQ issues in the classroom.

Trump continued his anti-trans screed by bringing up “men playing women’s sports”, alluding to the numerous false claims of men pretending to be women so they can win in sporting events.

He tried to shore up his inaccuracies by claiming trans athletes are regularly breaking longstanding records by huge margins, which simply isn’t true.
