Transgender Day Of Remembrance 2025

Today, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), recognized each year on November 20 to honor the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

So far in 2025, 27 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have died from violence, according to Advocates for Trans Equality’s 2025 Remembrance Report, and 21 who died by suicide.

Over 61% of those lost to suicide were between ages 15 and 24, which follows the Trump administration’s decision to end LGBTQ youth-specific services through the 988 suicide crisis line.

While each case is unique in its circumstances, what is clear is the epidemic of violence disproportionately impacts Black transgender women, who comprise 66% of all victims of fatal violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people.

TDOR began in 1999 as a way to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman murdered inside her Boston apartment in 1998. Below are more messages of support from national leaders and pro-LGBTQ groups.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, California mourns and honors all the trans and gender non-conforming people taken from us by violence and discrimination.

In California, hate is never tolerated. We will always defend the freedom, equality, and dignity of all people.
