Marriage News Watch – June 15, 2015

From the American Foundation for Equal Rights:

With the Supreme Court due to rule on marriage any day now, Presidential “candidate” Rick Santorum says he would fight back against a pro-equality ruling. He says that states allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry is a violation of his religious freedom, which is an argument a lot people made about interracial marriage in the 60s.

So do couples need to worry about the possibility that Rick Santorum could stop them from marrying? No. For one thing, the president doesn’t get to veto Supreme Court rulings.

And for another, Rick Santorum will never be president.

Rick Santorum Finds One Lone Attendee At Iowa Campaign Event

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum arrived at an Iowa campaign event where he was greeted by just one lone face.

Via Raw Story:

The Des Moines Register reported that Santorum decided to order lunch when he saw that Audubon County Republican Party Chair Peggy Toft was his entire audience at a restaurant in Hamlin.

“I haven’t eaten, actually, all day,” the candidate told Toft.

By the time his meal of tenderloin and onion rings showed up, so had three other voters, according to the Register.

At a small table in the restaurant, Santorum explained to Pastor Glen Meyers and the other listeners that same-sex marriage was threat to the family and religious liberty.

“This is where the left is saying, ‘Here is what your belief system should be, and anyone who does not toe the line, you’re a hater, you’re a bigot, you’re intolerant and you will not be tolerated,’” he insisted.

Santorum said that low turnout was all part of his plan.

“People don’t understand. One guy in there said, ‘I’ll speak for you at the caucus,’” he remarked. “That’s maybe eight votes that you wouldn’t otherwise get. Eight votes can make a big difference, as I know.”

Rick Santorum: SCOTUS “Doesn’t Have The Final Word” On Same-Sex Marriage

Speaking to Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet The Press” Rick Santorum told Todd that the US Supreme Court “doesn’t have the final word” on same-sex marriage.

Via NBC News:

When asked whether he would accept the Supreme Court’s ruling if they legalize same-sex marriage later this year, he said he would “fight it.”

“I think it’s important to understand that the Supreme Court doesn’t have the final word. It has its word. Its word has validity. But it’s important for Congress and the president, frankly, to push back when the Supreme Court gets it wrong,” said the presidential candidate on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday.

He went on to say that the country is not “bound by what nine people say in perpetuity” and that he’s continued his fight against Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that affirmed a woman’s right to an abortion, because he thinks “the court got it wrong.”

When asked whether he thinks states should ignore the ruling if the Supreme Court does legalize same-sex marriage, Santorum responded, “I don’t advocate civil disobedience. I do advocate the role of an informed citizen to try to overturn when a court makes a mistake and gets an issue wrong.”

I can only imagine what Santorum would view as “push back” would be to pass an amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Good luck with that one, Rick. Not gonna happen.

Rick Santorum Is Back In The Hunt

Rick Santorum, an uber-vocal advocate for conservative family values and longtime opponent of LGBT rights, began his 2016 White House bid on Wednesday, promising to fight for working-class Americans in a new election season that will see him find his footing in a different Republican Party.

The former Pennsylvania senator surprised many by scoring a second-place finish in the race for the Republican presidential nomination four years ago. But this time, he may not even make it to the debate podium as the most recent Fox News poll for GOP contenders puts him at only 2% or 12th on the crowded list of hopefuls.

“I am proud to stand here, among you and for you, the American workers who have sacrificed so much, to announce that I am running for president of the United States,” the 57-year-old senator said, flanked by factory workers and six of his seven children in a cinderblock warehouse near his western Pennsylvania hometown.

“The last race, we changed the debate. This race, with your help and God’s grace, we can change this nation.”

Rick Santorum On Bruce Jenner: “If He Says He’s A Woman, He’s A Woman”

Speaking at South Carolina’s GOP convention today, former Sen. Rick Santorum surprises a bit on the topic of Bruce Jenner being transgender:

“If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman. My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are.

“I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior. But as far as for who they are, you have to respect everybody, and these are obviously complex issues for businesses, for society, and I think we have to look at it in a way that is compassionate and respectful of everybody.

“So these are tough issues. I haven’t got into the whole issue, and I don’t think the federal government should get into the whole issue of bathrooms. I think those are things that the business community and local agencies and organizations should deal with.”

For The Record – Rick Santorum Would NOT Attend A Gay Wedding

Earlier this week, GOP candidate for president Sen. Marco Rubio said he would attend the gay wedding of a loved one or close friend, even though he doesn’t agree with their “choice.”

Calling into the Hugh Hewitt radio show, Rick “Frothy Mix” Santorum – who says he may also run for 2016 GOP nom – makes it clear he would NOT attend any gay wedding anywhere.

No way. No how. Uh-uh. Never.

Period.

Frothy Mix Will Run For GOP Nod In 2016

According to the Washington Post, former US Senator Rick Santorum will be in the hunt for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. However, Santorum says his second run for president will be retooled:

“America loves an underdog. We’re definitely the underdog in this race,” he said in an interview Tuesday. Santorum added that being underestimated — again — “has given me a lot of latitude.”

His iconic sweater vests will likely make a return appearance. But Santorum 2.0 will be a very different presidential campaign than the one that came from almost nowhere to win the Iowa caucuses in an overtime decision, he vows.

“I get the game,” Santorum said.

Anti-gay Rick Santorum says marriage equality “devalues” marriage

Former US Senator Rick Santorum

Right Wing Watch is reporting on a recent interview on the Eagle Forum Live radio show wherein former US senator and forever anti-gay Rick Santorum said that marriage equality “devalues” marriage:

The former senator and presidential candidate told host Anne Cori, Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly’s daughter, that supporters of marriage equality have “devalued marriage” and “divorced marriage from any meaning beyond a romantic relationship,” while Cori lamented the “celebration of single mothers.”

He also warned of polygamy: “If marriage is simply a romantic relationship between two people, and by the way, that’s what it’s devolved to the minds of a lot of Americans, if that’s all that marriage is well then it’s hard to make the argument that any two people or any three or four people shouldn’t be able to get married.”
