Rick Santorum at NOM’s 2014 Anti-gay Hate Rally in Washington DC

While many GOP politicians are beginning to put some distance between themselves and publicly opposing same-sex marriage, Rick “Frothy Mix” Santorum certainly wasn’t going to miss a chance to spout some anti-gay rhetoric at yesterday’s hate rally sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage.

Where once there would have been many conservative politicians lining up to speak out against equal rights for the LGBT community, yesterday’s epic fail of an event in Washington DC only saw the barest handful show up.  Billed as a kind of “national event,” the rally turned out only about 2,000 attendees.

Watch Frothy Mix tick off his usual reasons why the gays shouldn’t marry, including the mystifying idea that same-sex marriage is bad for the economy, when study after study shows gay marriage adds millions to states economies as states have seen the freedom to marry become legal across the country.

Rick Santorum likes to “bang” President Obama

At a GOP convention in Iowa over the weekend, Rick Santorum’s interesting choice of words were again on full display:

“Look, I understand why campaigns and all of you want to go out and just bang the president. It’s fun. I mean, it’s fun. It’s easy. It’s getting easier every day…”

You’ll note that Santorum says the President is a failure on every front. Tell that to the men and women of our armed forces who have come home from two wars; tell that to the retirees whose pensions have grown in value as the stock market has doubled; and tell that to the thousands and thousands of married same-sex couples who now have the rights and recognition of marriage.

Judge who overturned marriage ban in Pennsylvania was recommended by Rick Santorum

Joe Jervis of JoeMyGod points out the delicious irony in the 2002 press release below from then Sen. Rick Santorum – premier advocate for anti-gay animus.

Santorum personally recommended then Attorney John Jones for the judgeship he now holds in Pennsylvania after being nominated by President Bush.

That would be the same Judge John Jones who overturned Pennsylvania’s same-sex marriage ban today 🙂

“Attorneys Jones and Conner are highly qualified to assume the important role of Judge and the duty of protecting the Constitution and ensuring the effective operation of our judicial system.

“Since the onset of the war against terrorism, our federal judiciary has taken on an even higher level of importance, and it is imperative that we provide our courts with the resources necessary to enforce the rule of law.

“These judgeships are vital to our national security goals, and I urge my colleagues to work with the President to fill these vacancies in a timely manner.”

Stephen Colbert takes on Rick Santorum regarding marriage equality

Rick Santorum stopped by the Stephen Colbert show last night to discuss several topics: his new Christian based movie studio, the state of the Republican party and his thoughts on marriage equality.

Just a few of the choices lines Colbert delivered:

Colbert: “You’ve got these 15 states plus the District of Columbia that are riding the rainbow train to helltown right now,” Colbert said, sparking a smile from Santorum. “Hasn’t this one slipped away from us?”

Santorum: “I think the real problem here is marriage has slipped away from us. Marriage has devolved into just a romantic relationship between two people. And that’s not what marriage is.”

Colbert: “No, it’s for transferring property,” Colbert joked.

Watch the exchange below. Marriage equality comes into play about the 5:00 mark.

Rick Santorum: The Devil controls hollywood

Rick Santorum, champion of the down-trodden,  says you can fight the Devil by buying a ticket to see his new movie.

From Right Wing Watch:

While speaking on a network where televangelists on a daily basis tell viewers that God will reward them financially if they send in contributions, the former senator and presidential candidate spent most of the time criticizing movies for being too materialistic.

Santorum, who has previously said that Satan has control over mainline Protestantism and universities, thanked viewers in advance for seeing the movie.

“This is a tough business, this is something that we’re stepping out,” Santorum said, “and the Devil for a long, long time has had this, these screens, for his playground and he isn’t going to give it up easily.”

Rick Santorum: Marriage equality will be “the destruction of our republic”

Former US Senator Rick Santorum

Legalizing same-sex marriage will be “the destruction of our republic,” and Will & Grace started us down this path, says former U.S. senator and evergreen presidential hopeful, Rick Santorum.

Santorum made the remarks at the recent Midwest Republican Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo. He said that even with the sexual revolution of the 1960s, no one considered expanding the definition of marriage beyond male-female unions until Will & Grace came along with its sympathetic portrayals of gay men and their straight female friends. (Actually, same-sex couples have been seeking marriage rights since at least the 1970s, long before the sitcom’s premiere in 1998.)

He said young people are reluctant to speak out against marriage equality because they “have been beaten up” by those who consider such resistance an act of hate. He also predicted that Christian opposition to marriage equality will soon be suppressed as hate speech. “I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to tolerate and give tax-exempt status to haters,” he said.

While some are calling on Republicans to embrace marriage equality, Santorum said, “For the Republican Party to even contemplate going along with this is the destruction of our republic.” Watch video of his comments below, courtesy of Right Wing Watch.

Rick Santorum says there is no “middle class”

Rick Santorum is still sounding mad and angry. Still.

Rick Santorum says the term “middle class” is something that divides America. He says “don’t do it. Don’t say it.”

And yet the first sentence of this video he says “that’s what THE OTHER SIDE does.”

Our side, the “other side.”

Sounds like dividing people to me…

Possible campaign finance investigation for Rick Santorum and NOM

A complaint filed by former GOP presidential candidate Fred Karger triggered a possible campaign finance investigation for Rick Santorum, NOM and Bob Vander Plaats:

The Federal Election Commission is asking former presidential candidate Rick Santorum, Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats and an anti-gay marriage organization to tell the agency why it should not investigate an allegation that they violated campaign finance limits during the last election.

The complaint, brought by Fred Karger, a gay rights activist who ran a quixotic campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, accuses Santorum of coordinating with the National Organization for Marriage to pay $1 million to Vander Plaats to endorse him, with the money eventually going for ads backing Santorum. That would be a violation of campaign finance law.

The move by the FEC is routine when a complaint meets basic requirements.

In June, the FEC sent letters to Karger and the accused: Santorum, Vander Plaats and NOM. The three now can respond to the FEC with reasons why it should not investigate the matter. “This letter signals the beginning of the beginning,” said Craig Engle a campaign finance attorney at Arent Fox who is not connected to the case.

Rick Santorum can’t see the direction of history

As little Ricky marches to irrelevance…

Rick Santorum thinks the tide of marriage equality can still be turned back, and that the Supreme Court ruling overturning DOMA renders marriage in its current form “unconstitutional.”

But don’t worry. He’s wrong about things all the time. He’s used to it.

So, there.

Jon Stewart on the 2013 NRA Convention

Jon Stewart runs down the cray cray at the NRA Convention this past weekend in Texas.

The kids in Houston got off to a slow start as they really do more “2016 campaigning” than talk about guns. But they eventually get around to guns. Kinda.

Stewart breaks down the contradictions in the speechifying much better than I can. Take a look…
