Interview and review: Olivia Newton-John in “A Few Best Men”

Olivia Newton-John, now 63, has served up a new surprise at the Rome film festival. It’s a stand-out performance as a cocaine-snorting, champagne-swigging mother of the bride in the funniest comedy film in years, A Few Best Men.

“These are my best times,” she says, as we talk at the hotel where she’s staying with husband John Easter- ling, 62, with whom she always travels these days.

“I am enjoying a wonderful freedom. I never thought I would be saying this at my age but I do feel happier and sexier than ever. A lot of good things and bad things have happened during my life, which has been a roller coaster. But there is no better time than now. I live for the day, never think of the future and the past is gone. So I am always loving and living as if it is my last day.”

She and her husband, John Easterling, slipped away like teenagers to marry at an Incan spiritual ceremony in Cuzco, followed nine days later by a legal ceremony on Jupiter Island, Florida.

There were no guests at either service. The only person she told in advance was 25-year-old Chloe, her singer daughter by first husband, dancer and actor Matt Lattanzi.

“We wanted it to be about us rather than everyone else,” she explains.

“The last person you think about is yourself. We just wanted it to be about us and our union and commitment to each other. My life has been lived in the public eye and I wanted this one to be private.”

It seems to have inspired her to greater efforts. “I used to be so nervous before performances,” she says.

“But I no longer worry about every little thing and have changed my attitude completely. It has taken my whole life but I have finally worked out what it’s all about.”

Career highlights include working with Sir Cliff Richard on British television, moving to Los Angeles and starring in the film Grease as well as worldwide record sales which have topped 100 million.

But there have been setbacks, none more dramatic than her breast cancer in 1992. “I was forced to talk about it, really,” she recalls.

“I was in Los Angeles and someone found out and told the press. One newspaper, The Enquirer, was going to write that I was dying of cancer. I had not even told my family or friends at that stage. So I had to make a statement.

“On reflection I am happy it happened that way because talking about it was so important. It is much better to talk than keep it inside. That process is part of dealing with the illness.”

There have been many films since but Newton-John produces the performance of a lifetime in A Few Best Men.

She transforms herself from a rich and dutiful wife into a sexually charged mother of the bride.

With a mostly British cast which includes Kris Marshall and Kevin Bishop as two of three best men at an Australian society wedding, the film is being rated as the funniest since A Fish Called Wanda.

“The director Stephan Elliott told me, ‘This will kill Sandy’s image off for ever,’” she says, “but I said, ‘The world does not want Sandy to ever die. I will still be her when I’m old with no teeth!”

Group shot: “A Few Best Men” screening

Last week Michael and I attended a screening of Olivia Newton-John’s new movie “A Few Best Men” in Los Angeles. We had a great time enjoying the movie, the party and catching up with friends.

The above pic has a ton of “Team ONJ” folks – including Olivia, sister Rona, husband John Easterling, John and Pat Farrar and their son Max (John and Max wrote the new Olivia song for the end credits of the movie), Steve and Martha Real, manager Mark Hartley, and more.  And then there’s Michael and I.

And I love the “teaser poster” of Olivia’s character – mother of the bride – from the movie.

Look for the movie to open next year.  A lot of fun and Olivia in a role like we’ve never seen.  Very fun.

Olivia Newton-John conquers Rome Film Festival with new comedy

Translated from abc.es: The Australian actress Olivia Newton-John won the critical acclaim of the International Film Festival of Rome with her performance in the comedy “A Few Best Men”, where she plays a crazed mother-of-the-bride, fond of cocaine and alcohol, at the wedding of her daughter.

The Australian film, directed by Stephan Elliott, was presented out of competition this Friday and received applause from the audience after its screening on the third day of the event, which runs through Nov. 4.

Barbara (John Newton) is married to a wealthy Australian senator. After meeting the fiancé of his daughter Mia (Laura Brent), he instructs his wife to take charge of the ceremony to be held in a few days and which will be in the presence of Australian Parliament.

The groom (Xavier Samuel) of Mia, a Londoner who falls for the girl on a deserted island and decides to ask her to marry, returns to his hometown to report the news to his three best friends, who are responsible for turning the perfect wedding into a nest of problems and surreal situations.

“There is something crazy in this film and I wanted a change of scenery, so I seized the opportunity offered me Stephan Elliott,” Olivia said at a press conference, who was delighted with her new role.

However, she acknowledged that the character of Sandy in the musical “Grease”, with which gained fame for more than 23 years, will be with her forever.

“There are still many girls in the street who stop me and, obviously, none of them were born in 1978. I am very grateful to this character and I must say I deeply love Sandy” said the actress.

The Australian director, also present in Rome, joked about the famous film character “We wanted to kill “Sandy” and that’s why we have her character abusing drugs and alcohol,” he said.

Olivia Newton John explained that in those years, she starred in such films as “Grease” and “Xanadu,” starring roles suited to their age, and although she has a huge affection for them, she now looks for roles that are more serious, more suited to her age. “Although they have to be a little crazy,” he added with a laugh.

Screening of “A Few Best Men” with Olivia Newton-John

Last night I attended the AusFilm/Australians In Film screening of Olivia Newton-John’s new movie “A Few Best Men.” Also in attendance were co-stars Kris Marshall and Rebel Wilson as well as director Stephan Elliott.

There’s been a lot of buzz about the film and I can see why. The audience was packed, and I can honestly say the reaction was terrific. The audience was laughing the entire movie. I had read some “reviews” of the film based on it’s recent screening at the Mill Valley Film Festival and while I see how a critic may have their say comparing this to a “serious” film, this movie is pure fun. As I watched the film, I felt it was like a snowball rolling down the mountain getting bigger and funnier and faster with each minute.

The movie, to use an analogy, is like “The Hangover” meets “Bridesmaids” in Australia.

Olivia has a hysterical journey as the wife of an Australian senator, who through a series of events turns from proper to party girl over the course of the movie. Kris Marshall is also a standout as the groom’s best friend who watches the chaos unfold with a mix of indifference and concern.

The audience was laughing throughout and I’m not talking a few chuckles.  It was a fun ride of a movie and it was clear the crowd had a great time.  Is it “The King’s Speech”?  No.  It’s a LOT more fun.

“A Few Best Men” – Premier date: October 28, 2011 – 7:30pm
Additional screenings: October 29th – 2:30pm; October 30th – 8pm

From the official program of the International Rome Film Festival:

“When young Englishman David (Xavier Samuel) announces he’s marrying an Aussie (Laura Brent), his wild friends give completely new meaning to the concept of ‘for better or for worse.'”

“The ultra-chaotic wedding day in the Australian outback will test the relationship of the newlyweds-to-be as well as David’s friendship with this three best men, and risk turning what should be the best day of his life into the worst. This entertaining “culture clash” between his friends and her family proves blood is thicker than water!”

“This irresistible, rowdy auteur comedy from the director of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the wonderful Easy Virtue, which was enthusiastically received at the Rome Festival, also features the comeback of the legendary Olivia Newton-John.”

Stevie Nicks in Concert “Leather and Lace” featuring Steve Real

I had an amazing time seeing Stevie Nicks last night at the Hard Rock here in Las Vegas. Stevie was the legend we wanted her to be and the crowd was beside itself.

BUT the high point of the concert was Stevie calling her long-time vocal coach Steve Real out on stage to sing her huge hit “Leather & Lace.” Apparently she never does the song in concert because it’s a duet and it’s been hard to find a great vocal partner to do the song justice. Steve Real more than lived up to the Don Henley role and the audience lost their minds. Thrilling to be there. I wanted to share so I found a youtube video from earlier in the tour. Sorry to be selfish but I couldn’t bring myself to pull my phone out and video it – I wanted to just enjoy. BUT I did find a good video from a couple of weeks ago.

Speaking to Steve after the concert, he said it “just came up in sound check one day” that she thought they should do it. He sang it on the spot and now it’s a permanent part of her tour.

Long time fans know that Steve Real is also Olivia Newton-John’s vocal coach and back-up singer, which is how I know Steve.

Fantastic night last night.
