News Round-Up: November 18, 2017

Some news items you might have missed:

• According to the FBI, hate crimes in the U.S. saw a 5% increase in 2016. Of the 6,121 incidents reported 1,076 were based on sexual orientation bias and 124 were based on gender identity bias.

• A new report from the University of Chicago found that LGBTQ young adults had a 120 percent higher risk of reporting homelessness compared to youth who identified as heterosexual and cisgender.

• Aides in Donald Trump’s White House pick and choose which polls to show him making sure he sees primarily the “good ones.”

• Anti-LGBT hate group leader Tony Perkins helped to cover up a sexual assault by now-disgraced GOP Ohio State Rep. Wesley Goodman back in 2015. Goodman allegedly invited an 18-year-old male to crash in his hotel room and when the teenager woke up Goodman had unbuttoned his pants and was pulling his zipper down.

• Congrats to Allison Ikley-Freeman, an openly lesbian married woman who was just elected to Oklahoma state senate in a district that Donald Trump won in last year’s presidential election.

• Remember this Australian couple who said they would divorce if marriage equality came to Australia? No word yet on whether they intend on following through on that…

• I would love to have abs like “World’s sexiest math teacher” Pietro Boselli (above), but I like my food too much. So, let’s just look at him 🙂

• China is apparently using electro-shock therapy to try and convert gay men into heterosexuals.

• Anti-LGBT gay basher Kathryn Knott, who went to jail for the violent beating of Andrew Haught and Zachary Hesse in the Center City area of Philadelphia in 2014, has settled a civil lawsuit with the men she helped land in the hospital. Knott and her co-defendants Kevin Harrigan and Philip Williams have apparently agreed to a large six-figure settlement in order to avoid a court battle they’ve already lost once.

• Even more women have come forward accusing sexual assault/misconduct by GOP Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.

• In related Roy Moore news, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is floating the idea of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who used to hold the senate seat in Alabama, being a write-in candidate in next month’s election in an attempt to keep Moore out of the U.S. Senate. I wonder how Jeff Sessions feels about that?

• According to a new Morning Consult/Politico poll, former Vice President Joe Biden would easily beat Donald Trump 46%/35% should the Democrat decide to run for president in 2020.

• I love following these guys (above) on Instagram – totally “doggie-daddy” kinda guys 🙂

• Out actor Daniel Franzese says his co-star Bijou Phillips in Bully taunted him tirelessly throughout filming by body-shaming, outing and sexually harassing him on the set. Phillips says she “doesn’t remember that time well” but wants to apologize if she wasn’t the friend she thought she was.

• An upcoming documentary, Dream Boat, follows the journey of five men on holiday at sea facing body-image issues, HIV anxiety, loneliness, and pounding dance music. Watch the trailer below.

• The results of the Australian “vote-by-mail” survey on same-sex marriage will be announced Wednesday at 10AM, that’s 6pm ET / 3PM PT USA time.

• A group of young HIV-positive chefs utilize food and humor to dispel myths and stigma around HIV+ folks.

• Check out the trailer for sci-fi thriller Thelma, which chronicles a college girl’s emerging psychic powers as she figures out her attraction to another female student at her school. Now in select theaters.

• Yes, it’s calendar season! Whoo-hoo! Today’s charity calendar (above) is from former rugby champ and total LGBT ally Ben Cohen. Ben’s StandUp Foundation works to bring awareness to the long-term effects of bullying and strives to bring an end to bullying.

• Justice League star Ezra Miller was told by entertainment insiders he’d “made a mistake” by coming out. He’s not too worried 😉

• Embattled Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore told reporters yesterday that “Transgenders don’t have rights.”

• Folks are so over Kevin Spacey in the wake of the numerous sexual harassment allegations that Ridley Scott has recast Spacey’s supporting role in the upcoming All the Money in the World with Christopher Plummer. The entire movie was already filmed, edited and ready to be released in six weeks, but Sony is so freaked out they are going back into production to remove Spacey from the film.

• Gay adult film actor Ali Liam has been arrested for the stabbing death of his boyfriend.

• Out Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy (above) is having an Aruba moment. #jealous

• I usually think of Wednesday as “Hump Day” (“Hunk Day” works, too). But kenneth-in-the-212 celebrates “Wrestling Wednesdays.” Hit the link for lots of wrestlers in their singlets.

• Disney Channel has pulled TV series Andi Mack in Africa due to a featured coming-out story.

• Sir Ian McKellen would rather be remembered for his LGBT activism than his acting. I’m betting it will be for both.

• Sixteen-year-old Jordan Marin-Doan set fire to his adoptive gay dads’ house hoping to land a prison cell next to his biological dad. One of his adoptive dads died helping the rest of his family escape the fire.

• Anti-gay marriage county clerk Kim Davis is running for reelection in Kentucky after costing her state over $200,000 in legal fees for not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

• Ed Flanagan, the first openly gay lawmaker elected to statewide office in the U.S., having served as Vermont auditor of accounts and state senator, has died at the age of 66.

• Earlier this week in Las Vegas, Wendell Melton shot and killed his 14-year-old son, Giovanni, because he was gay. The young man’s former foster mother said the father “would rather have a dead son than a gay son.” #WeGotWorkToDo

• In their new book, The Last Republicans, both Presidents Bush – George H.W. and George W. – show they are no fans of Donald Trump. George H.W. admits he voted for Hillary and calls Trump “a blowhard.” And W doesn’t think Trump “understands” the office of the president.

• According to a new survey over two-thirds of people living with HIV in the UK don’t feel comfortable revealing their status to potential partners.

• Yeah, there’s a lot in the news that’s negative or depressing. But we don’t learn to do better if we don’t know what the problems are. AND – it’s important to stop and pay attention to good works being done every day by good folks.

Watch this and I dare you to not think to yourself, “What could I do?”

• Steve Pena (above) plans to “walk like an Egyptian” this Halloween. I’d follow his Pharaoh…

• Both chambers of Congress have now unanimously condemned Chechnya for anti-LGBTQ violence as President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson remain silent.

• In related news, Russia and Egypt are fighting to remove language in Principal 6 of the Olympic Charter which calls for banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. Both countries have been involved in anti-LGBTQ actions in past months.

• Marques Brownlee unboxes the new iPhone X – check out his thoughts below. Hubby Michael and I have both ordered the X as we haven’t upgraded our iPhones in years.

• While the majority of news outlets were covering yesterday’s indictments of three Trump campaign officials, several Fox News employees were embarrassed by their network’s obvious lack of coverage. At one point on Monday morning, Fox News was actually taking time to report on a hamburger emoji – “Look, the cheese is under the burger!!!”

• A new study indicates gay men (and straight women) are twice as likely to be attracted to guys with the same eye color as their father due to “sexual imprinting.” I do not fall into that category as my father had stunning ice blue eyes, but my hunky hubby Michael has beautiful brown eyes.

• No trick, total treat from 7-time Grammy Award winner Toni Braxton as she drops her new single, “Deadwood,” from her forthcoming album, Sex and Cigarettes, scheduled for a January release.

• One more Halloween post: “Super” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada arrived at work today dressed as “Clark Kent.” #WinnerWinnerWinner

• Just hours after Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp accused House of Cards star Kevin Spacey of unwanted sexual advances when Rapp was 14 years old in 1986, Netflix has announced the cancellation of House of Cards after the upcoming sixth season in mid-2018.
