Quote Of The Day: Jonathan Capehart On Mitt Romney Not Running In 2016

“Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee, made the right decision to not seek his party’s nomination for a third run.

“By bowing out today, Romney becomes a statesman of his party rather than a punch line for comedians. Besides, Sarah Palin has the latter role on lockdown.” – Jonathan Capehart writing for the Washington Post

Mittens Will Not Run In 2016

On a conference call this morning, Mitt Romney told donors he will NOT run for the 2016 GOP nomination.

From MSNBC:

Romney has spoken to supporters on a conference call, reading a statement explaining his decision. “It is best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee,” he said. “I believe that one of our next generation of Republican leaders, one who may not be as well known as I am today, one who has not yet taken their message across the country, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the Democrat nominee. In fact, I expect and hope that to be the case.”

It seems in exploring the landscape Mittens found many of his major donors had moved on to Jeb Bush.

Twitter responds:

Mitt Romney Will Share 2016 Thoughts On Conference Call Today

Bloomberg reports that Mitt Romney is apparently set to share his next steps regarding the 2016 GOP nomination for prez today:

Late Thursday evening, Romney’s political operation sent scores of supporters an email under his name inviting them to join a Friday morning conference call to be led by Romney himself for “an update.” The email was signed “All the best, Mitt.”

Those who have been helping Romney make up his mind say there are three factors in favor of a run, and two factors against. The main rationale on the “go” side is Mitt and Ann Romney’s strongly held conviction that no one in the current field would make a better president. Critics in both parties and the press may scoff at this view, but the Romneys believe it to their core and thus feel Mitt has an obligation to his country to once again shoulder the mantle.

CNN Poll: No clear GOP front-runner; Hillary leads on Dem side by 57 points

A new CNN/ORC International poll shows no clear front-runner for the GOP nomination for President in 2016.

According to the poll, this is the stacking order at present:

13% Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey
12% Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky
12% Former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas
11% Gov. Rick Perry of Texas
11% Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin
8% Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush
8% Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas
6% Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida
5% Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin
3% Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania

So – no clear front-runner at all.

On the Democrats side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton still holds an enormous lead over other possible candidates:

67% Hillary Clinton
10% Sen. Elizabeth Warren
8% Vice-President Biden

The poll also asked the question “Suppose that for some reason a presidential election were being held today and you had to choose between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Who would you be more likely to vote for?” The answer? Given a do-over, 53% would choose Mitt Romney and 44% would choose Obama.

However, kind of a false question as a LOT of presidents might see their histories rewritten given the same rhetorical question: Carter, Nixon, George W…. None of those guys would have been elected if the electorate was given the chance to look back than forward.

Plus, Romney has not had to prove anything from the Oval Office. So, it’s a lot easier for folks to “imagine” a different result but it does’t make it true.

Last point of interest in the poll – if Hillary and Romney were to run against the other, Hillary would win in a landslide 55%-42%.

Ohio Jeep plant hiring 1,000 workers to meet demand

BusinessWeek has the story:

Demand for Jeeps is so high that Chrysler workers are clocking 60 hours a week and still can’t keep up. So according to the Toledo Blade, the company is planning on hiring up to 1,000 part-time workers—American workers, in Ohio—so they can crank out enough Jeeps to meet the demand. These workers are even going to get health insurance.

So, wait – Mitt Romney, who said the plant was closing and maybe moving to China,  was wrong?

Yes.

Remember, Mitt Romney also would not have saved the auto industry.  He would have let the car companies go bankrupt, losing all those jobs.

America chose right.

Forward.

Mitt Romney says it will take a long time to determine societal effects of same-sex marriage

During an appearance this morning on NBC’s Meet The Press, failed GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney was asked by host David Gregory if his position on same-sex marriage had changed. Not surprisingly, Romney responded it has not.

Via Mediaite:

Gregory asked if the expansion of gay marriage rights has had a “negative impact on society.” Romney said that he believes marriage is an institution that exists between a man and a woman and the “ideal” situation in which to raise children is in a family with a father and a mother.

“I think it’s going to take a long, long time to determine whether having gay marriage will make it less likely for kids to be raised in settings where there’s a mom and a dad,” Romney said. “That’s not going to happen overnight. It’s something which happens over generations.”

Asked whether the conservative right had lost the fight over marriage equality, Romney said that the issue of “who wins and who loses” over this issue is irrelevant. “Sometimes, if something is lost, you move on to the next issue,” he concluded.

Speaking of “once something is lost” – why are we still asking Mr. Romney his opinion?  Hasn’t he lost enough at the ballot box that HE moves on?

Mitt Romney: President Obama’s problem is dishonesty

As the losing candidate from last year’s election, I find it terribly bad form to appear on TV and criticize the President in such a coarse manner.

There are some people who know how to exit the national stage and then re-enter with some modicum of class. Mitt Romney is not one of those people.

From the video description:

“What starts twisted stays twisted” Mitt Romney said on CBS This Morning on Friday. When asked by CBS host Charlie Rose about the problems associated with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Romney said that the website was not the president’s problem. “It’s dishonesty,” he said.
