Mike Pence: Reagan Spoke Truth “Just Like Donald Trump”

Wow. This is bold.

According to VP Republican running mate Mike Pence, speaking at the Reagan Presidential Library today, Donald Trump is now the “second coming” of Ronald Reagan.

From Politico:

“The American people picked a bold truth teller in 1980, and I know they’re going to elect a bold truth teller in 2016,” he said. “These challenging times bear a striking similarity, I believe, to the time America faced in 1980. Then as now we stand at a fault line in history. An economy in decline, joblessness stretched as far as the eye can see, alarming social upheaval and an America pushed around abroad.”

Pence, at times emotional, described Reagan as an outsider who made the political elite uncomfortable but won over voters with a refreshing bluntness. “In his voice they heard the rare and unmistakable sound of a man unbound by Washington niceties and pretense of power. In his voice they heard, for the first time in a long time, the truth,” Pence said. “Ronald Reagan spoke the truth to the American people, just like Donald Trump has.”

Patti Davis, the daughter of President Reagan, is no fan of Trump having recently denounced his “fondness for verbal violence” in regard to his comments about “Second Amendment people” and Hillary Clinton.

Nevada: Crowd Boos Military Mom At Mike Pence Campaign Rally

Folks here in Nevada are still in shock at the sight of seeing a military mom being booed at a Trump/Pence rally in Carson City yesterday.

This campaign team must be pulling their hair out at this point.

ABC News reports:

Mike Pence just can’t escape the controversy surrounding Donald Trump’s critical remarks about the parents of fallen soldier Capt. Humayun Khan.

Taking questions from the audience at a rally in Carson City, Nev., the Indiana governor was asked how he could “tolerate” Trump disrespecting military families.

“Time and time again Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans and has disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example of that,” Catherine Byrne asked, as the crowd started loudly booing. “Will there ever be a point in time when you’re able to look Trump in the eye and tell him enough is enough? You have a son in the military. How do you tolerate his disrespect?”

Pence, whose father was a combat veteran, thanked Byrne for the question and tried to quiet the room. “Folks — that’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like, okay? It is,” he said.

Awkward RNC Moments

I’m not sure if the most awkward moment of the GOP convention was last night’s Ted Cruz “failure to launch endorsement,” or this when Donald Trump went in to smooch his very homophobic running mate, Gov. Mike Pence.

Trump/Pence Logo Takes A Pounding On Social Media

Eyebrows were definitely raised across the political Twitterverse today when Donald Trump unveiled not only a running mate, but a new logo.

The logo is, ahem, quite penetrating.

CNN: Donald Trump Asked If He Could Back Out Of Pence VP Offer

Oh dear. Trouble in Trump Land already.

Dana Bash of CNN reports that Donald Trump was up until all hours last night asking if he could reverse course on his not-even-announced-yet veep pick, Mike Pence of Indiana.

Really instills confidence that you’re joining a smooth running, humming right along machine, huh, Mike?

MSNBC is backing up the reports.

It goes without saying that Pence has a terrible history with the LGBT community.

He pushed for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage that the even Republican-led Indiana state legislature felt went too far in limiting LGBT rights.

And of course, there’s last year’s media storm when Pence signed into law a “religious freedom” measure that would have allowed companies to assert their “sincerely held religious beliefs” if sued for denying service to LGBT customers.

The Indiana legislature eventually amended the law to clarify that it doesn’t allow discrimination against LGBTQ people. But for LGBT folks, we remember who pushed for the disastrous legislation.

Pence also voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and no on hate crime legislation.

On other political fronts Pence has been equally frightening:

• Supports a total ban on abortion.

• Slashed funding for higher education to fund corporate tax cuts.

• Supports defunding Planned Parenthood nationwide.

Side note: When I read “Trump/Pence,” I hear “tuppence.”

For someone who’s very aware of branding, imaging and language, it’s surprising no one explained to the Donald that that refers to a “trivial amount.”

It looks like Hillary Clinton was prepared for the announcement as she shared this little video introduction to Gov. Mike Pence.

Ann Coulter On Mike Pence Veep Pick: “Pence Is The Combo-Platter Of Disaster”

Ann Coulter has heard the rumors that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence will soon be Donald Trump’s pick for running mate, and she’s going apoplectic over the idea.

From her Facebook page:

Report: Trump about to make first mistake in VP pick, as predicted by Ann Coulter, July 6, 2016

MY VP PREDICTION: TRUMP’S FIRST MISTAKE

I won’t believe it, until I hear it from the Trump’s mouth.

Pence is the combo-platter of disaster. He’s all in for corporate America bringing in as many guest workers as they please to replace American workers, tried to sell the monster amnesty as a “compromise bill.” (How about this compromise: We start with a wall…)

He also somehow managed to tick off both sides in gay marriage debate. After his state passed a law passed protecting Christians from having to participate in gay marriages, all hell broke loose. Pence thought to himself: ‘I have semi heading for me. Should I just stand here? Yes, I think I’ll just stand here!’ First, he allowed himself to be portrayed as a right-wing homophobic nut and then — just days later — he sold out to the left-wing activists, anyway.

Donald Trump Veepstakes – Pence Or Gingrich?

Word is we should have the news of who the great Cheeto, Donald Trump, will choose to be his running mate by Friday.

Yesterday, folks seemed pretty sure Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has a lock on the nod.

But given the news that Fox News has suspended Newt Gingrich as a political contributor for the time being given his veep consideration AND he is apparently in Indiana today (and Fox News host Sean Hannity flew Gingrich out there), you have to wonder if that points to the Newtster.

Thoughts?
