Wounded Marine Alex Minsky inspires as fitness model

I’ve written about the handsome and inspiring US Marine turned inspiring fitness model Alex Minsky on The Randy Report before.

Now, Southern California’s KTLA news has caught up with a profile of the photogenic 25-year-old Marine who lost his right leg while stationed in Afghanistan.

The military veteran returned to the U.S. after the accident (which left him in a coma for 58 days), and after coping with the rigors of recovery which included a turn to alcohol began a rigid workout regimen to regain his physical and mental health.

Fate intervened when a photographer noticed the tattoo-covered Minsky leaving the gym, and an unlikely modeling career was born.

If I looked like that I’d write a book, too.

Joe Manganiello’s new book Evolution: The Cutting Edge Guide to Breaking Down Mental Walls and Building the Body You’ve Always Wanted will hit shelves December 3.

From the book description:

Nick Jonas photo shoot for Men’s Fitness

Ever since the “selfie” seen round the world, Nick Jonas’ body and especially his biceps have become a pop culture phenom.

Queerty has a cute “Year in the life of Nick Jonas’ Biceps” – it’s pretty funny and lots of pics of Nick’s biceps as they’ve become as famous as he is.

Below is a video interview from Nick’s recent photo shoot for Men’s Fitness.

Nick Jonas: Instagram shirtless pic was about fitness as diabetic

Nick Jonas shares shirtless self-pic to show diabetics can stay in shape and stay healthy

Nick Jonas talks to the Ryan Seacrest Show about the viral shirtless Instagram selfie that lit up the web this week:

“There’s a lot of people running around without their shirts on these days, so I just didn’t want to add to the noise, but I felt like as a diabetic … it’s twice as hard for us diabetics to stay in shape.

“I’ve met a lot of diabetics recently who have come to me and said, ‘Thank you for being so vocal about fitness and health’ because it’s helping them. I just wanted to give some inspiration to those people … It’s been a pretty hilarious reaction.”

Jonas tagged the Instagram pic with this: “I never do this but… Healthy living and fitness update. Post workout picture. #diabeticinshape #2.0″

Weird ways to burn 200 calories

As I’ve mentioned in passing a couple of times here on The Randy Report, I’m currently looking for ways to “balance” my approach to fitness and nutrition. I’m not going crazy with any fad items on the menu, but I’m looking for ways to help me out to a healthier lifestyle.

AND since I love the folks at AsapSCIENCE, how timely that their latest video to make you smarter in three minutes concerns ways to burn 200 calories!

Watch, learn in three minutes and drop some of these facts at your next cocktail hour or coffee klatch.

Happy Tuesday, kids!

The hot potato squat

I’ve recently gotten back into working out and watching my nurtrition with my 50th birthday coming up and heading into rehearsals for the Hollywood Bowl production of CHICAGO the Musical. I still have just enough of my tiny, beat-down ego to NOT show up at rehearsals looking out of shape. The past six weeks has really been just for me, and I’ve really appreciated that the stars came together to inspire me to improve myself FOR myself.

I’ve been looking for some new exercises that burn more and more calories plus strengthen my core muscles. Chest, biceps, back – all those are pretty straight forward. But getting my midsection strong isn’t as simple as some situps. So, I found “the hot potato squat.”

BJ Gaddour, owner of StreamFit.com, says”the hot potato squat” trains a lot of muscles, particularly big ones like your quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes. According to Gaddour, it burns more calories per rep than almost any other exercise.

Then, for a tougher challenge and more benefit, Gaddour throws an airborne dumbbell into the mix. “Holding the weight on just one side of your body increases the demand placed on your core to keep your body stable,” he says. “As the weight changes from side to side, your core muscles are worked from every angle.”

Olympic gymnast Louis Smith on the cover of Gay Times Magazine

Silver-medal Olympic gymnast Louis Smith hits the cover of the August issue of Gay Times in naught but an attention-grabbing light blue speedo.

In his interview – yes, there are articles to read, not just pictures – Smith addresses the topic of gay sportsmen who are still afraid to come out due to the persecution they would suffer for failing to live up to the expectations of being a straight man. Except for gymnastics. In gymnastics, “you’re always wearing a leotard.”

He thinks gay people should be allowed to marry too:

“What is ‘natural’? If someone says to you ‘act normal’ – what is ‘normal’? You can’t be defined. If you fall in love with someone you fall in love with someone.”

The latest issue of Gay Times is available for digital download.

Folks are working out

I was just at my gym here in Las Vegas and have to note that classes here are always PACKED. And so is the rest of the gym whenever I’m here. And it’s a big gym.

We hear so much about how America is getting more and more sedentary, and I know that is a big issue with computers, smartphones, etc.

BUT there’s a whole lot of folks getting out and getting physical.

Color me impressed.

Ian Ziering gets ready to become the next Magic Mike for Chippendales

Ian Ziering gets ready to become the next Magic Mike at Chippendales

A couple of pics from Ian Ziering’s final rehearsals for Chippendales in Las Vegas at the Rio All-Suites Hotel show he’s ready to become the next “Magic Mike” – or we should really be saying “Magic Ian.” Clearly the semi-finalist from Dancing With The Stars has the moves down.

Ian Ziering opens tonight with the Chippendales and appears as the celebrity guest host for the remainder of the month.

I’m attending Ian’s opening night, so planning to have pics of the event tomorrow. Even in rehearsal clothes, Ian looks AMAZING. Shoulders, pecs, biceps, triceps – he’s got it all.  We should all look so good at 49!
