Texas College Bans Student Drag Show As Denigrating To Women

Walter Wendler, president of West Texas A&M University

Walter Wendler, president of West Texas A&M University, is being called out after cancelling a student drag show. In an email addressed to students, faculty and staff, Wendler compared drag shows to performing in “blackface.” He also declared that such performances are not only degrading to women, but are “derisive, divisive and demoralizing misogyny.” The event, planned for March 31, was to be a charity fundraiser for The Trevor Project, which works to reduce suicides in the LGBTQ community. In his letter dated March 20, Wendler said that he believes drag shows do not preserve “a single thread of human dignity.” He added that such performances, in his opinion, “stereotype women in cartoon-like extremes for the amusement of others and discriminate against womanhood.” “As a university president, I would not support ‘blackface’ performances on our campus, even if told the performance is a form of free speech or intended as humor, ” Wendler wrote. “It is wrong. I do not support any show, performance or artistic expression which denigrates others—in this case, women—for any reason.” “No amount of fancy rhetorical footwork or legal wordsmithing eludes the fact that drag shows denigrate and demean women—noble goals notwithstanding,” Wendler said at the end of the letter. “A harmless drag show? Not possible.” Related: Anti-Drag Protesters Vandalize NYC Councilman’s Office & Home  But university students and First Amendment lawyers say Wendler’s description of drag shows is off base and the cancellation violates not only First Amendment rights but a state law which protects free-speech rights. In a statement posted on Change.org, where an online petition has been launched in support of the drag show, students say Wendler is violating university policy by suspending the drag show. From The Texas Tribune:

Prior to working at West Texas A&M University, Wendler was the chancellor at the Carbondale campus of Southern Illinois University. He was ousted from his position after allegations of plagiarism, and speaking out against giving employee benefits to same-sex partners because it would encourage “sinful behavior.”

Four new bills filed in the Texas legislature aim to re-categorize bars or businesses that host drag shows as “sexually oriented businesses,” the same classification as adult movie theaters and sex shops. That would result in operating under different regulations as well as higher taxes and fees. Those increased pressures could compel the businesses to stop presenting drag performances or shut down altogether. Fire Chief Catches Heat After Calling Drag Event ‘Fa**ot Show’

A fire chief in Delaware attended a drag show at a local restaurant over the weekend and then took to social media to complain about being ‘talking into’ going to a ‘faggot show.’ William Buckaloo, the assistant fire chief in Rehoboth Beach, attended a drag show at the Blue Moon and tagged himself in a Facebook post which read, “The sh*t I get talked in to (sic)…Matt, talked us to go to a f*ggot show.” The hostess for the show, Magnolia Applebottom, came across the social media post and addressed the remarks on her Instagram:

“What a sad turn of events. The @lewes_fire chief thought it was ok to go to a gay owned and operated establishment… and go to a show hosted and produced by a award winning gay entertainer and use that F word on social media… Your job is to protect the people in our community not bring us down. Do better!!! Be better!!! And we recognize your inappropriate behavior.”

The friend tagged in the Facebook post by Buckaloo, Matt Sprenkle, quickly put space between himself and the fire chief as well as denouncing Buckaloo’s comments. Sprenkle told the Washington Blade he did not invite Buckaloo to the show nor did he attend the show, as he was dining in the restaurant at the time. Sprenkle clarified that he’s only an acquaintance of Buckaloo’s and the two men had run into each other at the Blue Moon. “I do not agree with any of the comments he made and do not associate myself with them,” said Sprenkle. After the social media firestorm, Lewis Fire Department Chief Steve Evans told the Blade that he had removed Buckaloo from his position. Evans added that he “expects the department will formally suspend Buckaloo” as well.

Buckaloo has not commented publicly since being removed from his position.
