Donald Trump Threatens Co-Author Of THE ART OF THE DEAL

Tony Schwartz, the co-author of the Donald Trump memoir “The Art Of The Deal,” has been threatened with legal action for speaking out about his former “collaborator” and current Republican presidential candidate.

Via the New Yorker:

On Monday, July 18th, the day that this magazine published my interview with Schwartz, and hours after Schwartz appeared on “Good Morning America” to voice his concerns about Trump’s “impulsive and self-centered” character, Jason D. Greenblatt, the general counsel and vice-president of the Trump Organization, issued a threatening cease-and-desist letter to Schwartz. (You can read the full letter at the bottom of this post.) In it, Greenblatt accuses Schwartz—who has likened his writing of the flattering book to putting “lipstick on a pig”—of making “defamatory statements” about the Republican nominee and claiming that he, not Trump, wrote the book, “thereby exposing” himself to “liability for damages and other tortious harm.”

Greenblatt demands that Schwartz send “a certified check made payable to Mr. Trump” for all of the royalties he had earned on the book, along with Schwartz’s half of the book’s five-hundred-thousand-dollar advance. (The memoir has sold approximately a million copies, earning Trump and Schwartz each several million dollars.) Greenblatt also orders Schwartz to issue “a written statement retracting your defamatory statements,” and to offer written assurances that he will not “generate or disseminate” any further “baseless accusations” about Trump.

On Thursday, reached by e-mail on an airplane, Schwartz said that he would continue to speak out against Trump, and that he would make no retractions or apologies. “The fact that Trump would take time out of convention week to worry about a critic is evidence to me not only of how thin-skinned he is, but also of how misplaced his priorities are,” Schwartz wrote. He added, “It is axiomatic that when Trump feels attacked, he will strike back. That’s precisely what’s so frightening about his becoming president.”

Donald Trump: Obama’s Body Language Looks “Anti-Police”

It seems not matter how many times President Obama steps up to a podium to denounce violence on police officers, Donald Trump can’t seem to hear that message.

Repeating the phrase “there’s something going on” over and over, Donald Trump inferred that President Obama’s body language suggests that he is anti-police.

Via Politico:

In an interview Monday morning on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Trump seemed to imply that the president had sided with those attacking police officers, despite Obama’s words to the contrary.

“I mean, you know, I watched the president and sometimes the words are okay,” Trump said. “But you just look at the body language. There’s something going on. Look, there’s something going on and the words are not often okay, by the way.”

“What does that mean, there’s something going on?” host Steve Doocy replied.

“There’s just a bad feeling, a lot of bad feeling about him,” Trump said. “I see it too. There’s a lot of bad feeling about him. We have a country that has not been like this since I can remember it.”

Donald Trump Campaign Continues To Solicit Illegal Foreign Donations

Right-leaning news outlet The Hill has the details:

Donald Trump’s campaign is still soliciting illegal donations from foreign individuals — including members of foreign governments at their official email addresses — weeks after the campaign was put on notice by watchdog groups.

Foreign members of parliament from the United Kingdom and Australia confirmed to The Hill that they received fundraising solicitations from the Trump campaign as recently as July 12 — two weeks after a widely publicized Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint issued on June 29 by nonpartisan watchdogs Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center.

These latest campaign finance violations were first reported by the investigative website WhoWhatWhy and have been confirmed by The Hill. The Trump campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Trump/Pence Logo Takes A Pounding On Social Media

Eyebrows were definitely raised across the political Twitterverse today when Donald Trump unveiled not only a running mate, but a new logo.

The logo is, ahem, quite penetrating.

CNN: Donald Trump Asked If He Could Back Out Of Pence VP Offer

Oh dear. Trouble in Trump Land already.

Dana Bash of CNN reports that Donald Trump was up until all hours last night asking if he could reverse course on his not-even-announced-yet veep pick, Mike Pence of Indiana.

Really instills confidence that you’re joining a smooth running, humming right along machine, huh, Mike?

MSNBC is backing up the reports.

Poll: Hillary Clinton Leads Donald Trump In 4 Major Battleground States

According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton currently leads GOP White House hopeful Donald Trump by significant margins:

• Florida – Clinton over Trump 44% – 37%

• North Carolina – Clinton over Trump 44% – 38%

• Virginia – Clinton over Trump 44% – 35%

These four states combine for a total of 66 electoral votes, making these results noteworthy.

Donald Trump Announces Indiana Gov. Mike Pence To Be His Running Mate

It goes without saying that Pence has a terrible history with the LGBT community.

He pushed for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage that the even Republican-led Indiana state legislature felt went too far in limiting LGBT rights.

And of course, there’s last year’s media storm when Pence signed into law a “religious freedom” measure that would have allowed companies to assert their “sincerely held religious beliefs” if sued for denying service to LGBT customers.

The Indiana legislature eventually amended the law to clarify that it doesn’t allow discrimination against LGBTQ people. But for LGBT folks, we remember who pushed for the disastrous legislation.

Pence also voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and no on hate crime legislation.

On other political fronts Pence has been equally frightening:

• Supports a total ban on abortion.

• Slashed funding for higher education to fund corporate tax cuts.

• Supports defunding Planned Parenthood nationwide.

Side note: When I read “Trump/Pence,” I hear “tuppence.”

For someone who’s very aware of branding, imaging and language, it’s surprising no one explained to the Donald that that refers to a “trivial amount.”

It looks like Hillary Clinton was prepared for the announcement as she shared this little video introduction to Gov. Mike Pence.
