Daily Dance: Behind-The-Scenes Of FX’s ‘Fosse/Verdon’

I have loved FX’s mini-series Fosse/Verdon. Sorry to see we reached the finale this Tuesday.

One of the highlights of the series, which chronicles the lives, love and collaborations of director/choreographer Bob Fosse and 4-time Tony Award winner Gwen Verdon, has been the attention to detail in regard to the famous ‘Fosse style’ of dance presented throughout the series.

FX put together this behind-the-scenes look at how the choreography achieved such authenticity, in great part to members of the Verdon Fosse Legacy Project.

The project is made of of dancers who worked closely with Fosse on his Broadway productions and so have first hand knowledge of what the true, original intent of iconic steps and dance numbers was.

In the video below, Dana Moore, Lloyd Culbreath, and Valarie Pettiford talk about their work and experiences with the master himself.

I’ve worked with Dana, Lloyd and Valarie, and they definitely are the keepers of the flame.

When I went into the Broadway production of Chicago the Musical, it truly was like learning a new language. Dancing ‘Fosse style’ means mastering a vocabulary all unto itself.

Over the years, I’ve staged four productions of Chicago using the same approach that Ann Reinking did of creating my own version but utilizing the vocabulary, and there’s no cheating on that.

Trust and believe, Fosse dancers spot bad ‘imitation Fosse’ from a mile away.

Check out the video below, and bravo to the folks who gave us this terrific series.

• This could technically qualify as a ‘Daily Dance’ post, but I thought I’d leave this right here.

Florida-based dancer/entertainer José Adones (top of page) is giving you all kinds Latin flavor here. And I ain’t mad 🙂

Daily Dance: The Incredible Andrew On UK’s ‘The Greatest Dancer’

I post videos under the ‘Daily Dance’ banner here on The Randy Report because dance has been a huge part of my life for over 40 years.

Early on, dance – the physical expression of every possible human emotion – found a connection deep within me.

As it does for young Andrew here.

The world can be a frustrating, angry place at times. But, not in these few minutes that we get to share with Andrew.

Please – stop and watch.

You have to go to the well, sometimes, to refresh your soul. Thank you, Andrew.

Daily Dance: New York City Ballet Hosts Workshops For Children With Disabilities

I love that the sheer joy of dance, of movement – something I spent my life enjoying – is celebrated and shared in workshops for children with disabilities hosted by the New York City Ballet.

In these bright afternoons, children with physical challenges can wear tutus and top hats, and experience the magic that is dance alongside principal dancers from the famed ballet company.

Sunday Morning’s Lesley Stahl talks with Dr. Joseph Dutkowsky, a specialist in cerebral palsy, and with parents of children sharing movement in a studio with live music and other dancers.

Daily Dance: Ken Berry For Kinney Shoe Store

Ken Berry(credit: ABC Television/WikiMedia Commons)

Over the weekend I learned that actor Ken Berry, star of such TV series as F Troop (1965-1967), The Andy Griffith Show (1968), and its spin-off, Mayberry, R.F.D. (1968-1971), had died at the age of 85.

He also appeared 19 times on The Carol Burnett Show (1968-1978), creating the character “Vinton Harper” on Mama’s Family (1983-1990), which was a spin-off of the show’s “The Family” sketches.

But what most folks don’t know is he was a highly trained singer and dancer having performed on Broadway (The Billy Barnes Revue) and toured extensively in a national company of the hit musical, George M!

I had several friends who worked with Berry in several musical productions, and everyone said he was a prince of a guy.

Check out Berry’s tap-dancing skills below.

Michael Dameski

Aussie dance phenom Michael Dameski may not have won the big prize on the finals of NBC’s World of Dance this week, but he is a champ in my book.

Dameski’s technique, artistry and fearlessness makes him a force of nature on the dance floor.

I don’t need to convince you – his dancing will.
