Madonna’s World Domination Began 35 Years Ago This Week

According to Billboard’s Senior Chief of Charts, Keith Caulfield, 35 years ago this week Madonna began her quest to “rule the world.” The future-pop queen hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 “for the very first time” with her hit single, “Like a Virgin.”

Billboard announced Monday that “Old Town Road” — the country/rap smash hit single by openly gay 20-year-old Lil Nas X — has officially broken the record for most week’s at number one – 17 – on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In doing so, “Old Town Road” bumps the two songs that had previously held the record: Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” from 1995, and “Despacito,” the Latin-pop juggernaut by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber.

The rapper kept his momentum going the past several weeks by releasing new remixes of the song. The remixes helped garner streams online as Billboard counts streams, along with downloads and radio play, in tabulating the singles chart.

Last week, Lil Nas X dropped a “Seoul Town Road” version featuring popular K-pop group, BTS.

During his run, he’s fended off challenges for the top spot from music stars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran.

The rapper made a social media splash when he came out via Twitter during Pride Month in June.

The music video for the song has garnered over 239 million views.

Joe Jervis at JoeMyGod points up this super-creative cover of the song by Walk off the Earth. This YouTube video alone has over 6 million views.

Madonna’s new album, Madame X, garners the ‘Material Girl’ her 9th number one album on the Billboard 200.

From Billboard:

The set, released via Interscope Records on June 14, launches with 95,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending June 20, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 90,000 were in album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 29-dated chart, where Madame X bows at No. 1, will be posted in full on Billboard’s websites on June 25.

Overall, Madame X’s debut sum of 95,000 equivalent album units is comprised of 90,000 in album sales, 1,000 in TEA units and 4,000 in SEA units.

Madame X grants Madonna her ninth leader on the Billboard 200. She last led the list in 2012, with MDNA. Here’s a look at all of Madonna’s No. 1 albums: Madame X, MDNA, Hard Candy (2008), Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005), American Life (2003), Music (2000), Like a Prayer (1989), True Blue (1986) and Like a Virgin (1985).

Madonna continues to have the second-most No. 1 albums among female artists, trailing only Barbra Streisand, who has 11. Among all acts, The Beatles have the most No. 1s, with 19. They are followed by Jay-Z (14), Streisand and Bruce Springsteen (both with 11), Elvis Presley (10), Eminem, Garth Brooks, Madonna and The Rolling Stones (all with nine).

Madge also scored a #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Song chart.

The Queen of Pop has landed at the top of Billboard’s chart more than any artist in history, snatching up 163 number one positions across all charts including Billboard 200, Hot 100 (singles), Dance and more.

Bradley Cooper Lands On The Billboard Charts Thanks To ‘A Star Is Born’

From Billboard:

Bradley Cooper earns his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Oct. 13), as “Shallow,” with Lady Gaga, arrives at No. 28.

After the actor made his first Billboard chart visit last week, the song debuts on the Hot 100 following its first full week of tracking.

It bows with 8.3 million U.S. streams and 58,000 downloads sold in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music, as it jumps from No. 14 to No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart (marking Gaga’s sixth leader on the list).

Radio Show: Chloe Lattanzi Talks Re-Imagining “Magic” With Mom Olivia Newton-John

Chloe Lattanzi and Olivia Newton-John
Chloe Lattanzi and Olivia Newton-John hit #1 on Billboard Dance chart

A few weeks ago, I was engaged by a big media outlet to interview Olivia Newton-John and her daughter Chloe as their dance hit, “You Have To Believe,” was racing up the Billboard Dance charts. At the time I chatted with Chloe (I record all of my interviews so I can make sure I quote folks correctly), the song was just hitting #19 on it’s way to #1 whereupon Chloe and Olivia became the first mother/daughter team to reach #1 on the Billboard Dance Club chart. Chloe also talks about her upcoming role in the Syfy network film, “Dead 7.” I thought my radio audience might be interested in hearing the actual interview, and so, voila! Chloe is quite charming throughout the chat, and it’s fun to hear the excitement in her voice as the song’s journey was just unfolding. Adele’s “25” Breaks (And Sells) A LOT Of Records

Not only did Adele’s smash-hit 25 become the #1 album in it’s first week of sales, the emotional song set sold more than TWICE the combined sales of the rest of the albums in the top 100 albums sold.

Adele racked up an astonishing 3.38 million units last week, much more than previous front-runner for 2015, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (1.75 million units this year).

To put that in perspective, only two albums outsold that in 2014 (and I mean all of 2014): Swift’s 1989 and the Frozen soundtrack.

According to Billboard, 8.2 million albums total were sold that week, meaning 4 in 10 albums purchased were Miss Adele’s.

And signally a strong trend of late, 22,000 vinyl albums of 25 were sold that week.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, and I can’t imagine that’s statistically possible at this point, head over to iTunes here.

Olivia Newton-John & Chloe Lattanzi Become 1st Mother/Daughter Team To Top Billboard Dance Chart

Pop music legend Olivia Newton-John and daughter Chloe Lattanzi have become the first mother/daughter team ever to hit number 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts with their reimagined version of the ON-J hit “Magic,” now titled “You Have To Believe.”

Although she has topped many Billboard charts (Top 200, Top 100, Pop, Country, Soundtrack), this is Olivia’s first number one on a Dance chart. Additionally, this is Lattanzi’s freshman appearance on the Billboard charts ever.

Via press release:

“I am so excited that this collaboration with my daughter and Dave Audé has reached #1 on the Dance Club Songs chart,” says Newton-John. “It’s fun to have another number one at this point in my career but, I am even more excited that it’s with my daughter and that we get to share this together!”

Lattanzi, who makes her Billboard chart debut with “You Have to Believe” echoes her mother’s excitement with the success of the song: “Having had the chance to work with my mom was such a great learning experience,” says Lattanzi. “Now add to that being #1 makes it icing on the cake – I’m so proud of being a part of such an amazing team!”

In addition to her chart-topping status with “You Have to Believe,” Chloe has also been in high-demand since the debut of the song’s music video, which also enjoyed success reaching the #2 spot on the “All Music Videos” chart on iTunes in August. After seeing the video, former Backstreet Boy, Nick Carter, immediately created a role for Lattanzi in his upcoming SyFy Channel zombie film, Dead 7, which is scheduled for broadcast in early 2016. Lattanzi is currently in the studio working on the follow up to her latest #1 hit.

The music video for the song created a sensation when released a few months ago, with Lattanzi skipping through the Las Vegas Neon Graveyard before exploring classic club life in a nightclub with celebrity impersonators, all while Olivia sings from a white, lofty haven.

My First Writing Gig For ETOnline

Just wanted to share a link to my first writing gig for ETOnline that published today.

I’m kinda jazzed about it. I think cocktail hour comes early today.

I won’t post it here – click over to ETOnline.com to read my interview with music legend Olivia Newton-John & her daughter Chloe Lattanzi who just hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Dance Club chart with their song “You Have To Believe.”

I can only think of one other mother/daughter music act to hit the Top 10 on Billboard and that’s the Judds.

Can anyone else think of another mom/daughter duo on the music charts?
