Nigeria: Eleven men face stoning to death for homosexuality

The BBC reports on the citizens’ arrest and upcoming “trial” of 11 men in Nigeria:

An Islamic court in Nigeria’s northern state of Bauchi has put on trial 11 Muslim men accused of being homosexuals in violation of their religion, a religious leader has told the BBC.

A 12th person arrested – a Christian – would be tried under secular law, a BBC reporter says.

Under Islamic law, a person can be sentenced to death by stoning if convicted of homosexuality.

It is also illegal to have gay sex in Nigeria, according to its secular laws.

Jibrin Danlami Hassan, the commissioner of Bauchi state’s Sharia Commission, said the alleged homosexuals were arrested by residents of Bauchi city. They were handed to the Islamic police force, which interrogated them, he said. “They accept that they are doing that dirty game,” Mr Hassan said.

Ms Aken’Ova said some of those arrested had been beaten up and tortured, but Mr Hassan denied this.

One day after the strict anti-LGBT bill — dubbed the “Jail the Gays” law — was signed into law in Nigeria, police arrested dozens of gay men, The Associated Press reports.

Police allegedly based the arrests on a list of 168 suspects purportedly obtained through torture.

Nigeria: Anti-gay law “enforcers” plan to hunt down gays

With the passage of the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill in Nigeria, anti-gay forces are now emboldened to hunt down gays and lesbians in order to form a “decent society.”

From Google News:

Islamic law enforcers in north Nigeria’s biggest city on Wednesday vowed a crackdown on homosexual activity, in the wake of new anti-gay marriage legislation that has sparked international outrage.

The deputy head of the Hisbah in Kano state, Usman Nabahani, told AFP that the new law banning gay marriage and civil partnerships was a “welcome development”.

“Definitely, we will work tirelessly toward the enforcement of this law by the special grace of God,” he added.

“From now on, we will go into every nook and corner of Kano state to ensure that (the prohibition of) prostitution, gay marriages, marriages of the same sex and consumption of alcohol… is fully complied with, so that we can have a decent society.

“We are given more power, we are given more support now to wage serious war against these issues.”

Homosexual acts have long been illegal in Nigeria, but Monday’s bill also made it a crime punishable by ten years in prison to form gay clubs, promote LGBT rights, or stage same-sex ceremonies.

GOP Congressman introduces bill to limit recognition of gay marriage

Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) has introduced a bill called the “State Marriage Defense Act of 2014,” which seeks to limit federal recognition of same-sex marriage in lieu of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Under Congressman Weber’s new bill, the State Marriage Defense Act, the federal government would have to respect the definitions of marriage in all 50 states. A couple’s state of residence would define their marital status.

If this bill were to pass — which seems unlikely — couples’ marriage status would change as they travel from state to state, endangering the safety and security of their families.

Peter LaBarbera still can’t articulate his anti-gay hate other than he just hates gays

Anti-gay crusader Peter LaBarbera

For no good reason that would add up to any common sense, virulently anti-gay Peter LaBarbera was invited to be a guest on Alan Colmes radio show yesterday.

LaBarbera runs the “Americans for Truth about Homosexuality” which is a classified as a certified hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

While talking with Colmes, LaBarbera stated that children would “be better off in a single-parent household because you’re not modeling homosexual behavior.”

“When you have two men raising a young child, that child grows up learning dysfunction and a sexual perversion as normal. He’s learning a sexual perversion as normality.”

LaBarbera is not a trained sociologist, a child psychologist, or — as far as I know – any other certified or trained professional practitioner of psychiatry, child rearing, or family development, so why in the world anyone would even ask his opinion on the raising of children is a puzzlement.

According to sources, the only “designation” he has earned is a BA in Political Science.  You do the math on that one.

You can listen to the exchange below:

To further underline LaBarbera’s less than informed positions, Right Wing Watch notes that LaBarbera “was left speechless when Colmes asked him to spell out his plan to ban homosexuality.”

LaBarbera repeatedly refused to answer Colmes’ question about what he thinks the punishment for homosexual behavior should be, finally admitting: “I don’t know what the punishment should be.”

“So you want these laws on the books but you don’t know what to do about them?” Colmes asked. “You keep talking about criminalizing sodomy and using the country of Jamaica as a model for that but you’re not telling me how you would enforce it and then what the punishment should be. So you don’t have a well-rounded idea of how to approach the idea of criminalizing it.”

In Jamaica, where LaBarbera campaigned for the preservation of the country’s stringent anti-gay laws, homosexuality is punishable up to ten years in jail.

Listen below as Colmes repeated asks how such anti-gay laws would be enforced and what the punishment would be.  LaBarbera is so caught up in hating the gays, he hasn’t gotten to how he punish them.  I’m guessing he’s of the “arrest first, figure the rest out later” kind of hater:

Utah: Anti-gay sheriffs call for “uprising” against equal rights for gays and lesbians

At a meeting of law enforcement members calling for an “uprising” against same-sex marriage in Utah, former Graham County, Ariz., Sheriff Richard Mack had this to say:

“The people of Utah have rights, too, not just the homosexuals. The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats…

“That’s a lie. That’s an absolute lie [that the federal government’s ruling overrules Utah’s laws]. We have a right to raise our kids without homosexuals being part of the Boy Scouts, the schools and teachers and doing everything. They can be all that, but don’t shove your agenda down my kid’s throat.

“We have a right to raise our kids how we want not how you want.”

I’m not sure I understand how anyone has told Mr. Mack how to raise his kids differently than he was before marriage equality came to Utah. No school or teacher is “teaching” homosexuality.

Strange the sound bites these guys come up with. Check out the video report below:

Brian Brown almost belligerent when confronted with facts on marriage equality

Brian Brown, of the hate group National Organization for Marriage, becomes almost belligerent when he jumps in to defend anti-gay marriage law on UP with Steve Kornacki this weekend.

After the rest of the panel speak calmly and cite current poll numbers, note Brian’s clear shift in energy as he tries to beat back the facts he’s been presented with. Also, his use of poll tested “catch phrases” like “redefine traditional marriage” instead of same-sex marriage or gay marriage. How many buzz words can you count here?

The rest of the panel do a great job of presenting the facts as they are regarding the forward trend of marriage equality.

It was interesting to see Brian in such unfamiliar territory. I’m betting we won’t see him again on MSNBC any time soon. BUT I think this is important to watch because his tone and demeanor are very telling in how he addresses the issue.

On a side note – and I’m not being snarky here – but I can’t help but note how bloated and heavy Brian Brown seems compared to the rest of the panel.  And note his physicality – shoulders hunched up, downward tilt of his mouth…  I’m not calling him “fat” – but he appears unhealthy. When you couple his angst and belligerence with his weight and fitness, I wonder if having such negative messaging to deliver is a factor?

Just thinking out loud.

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson breaks his silence, addresses his anti-gay comments in GQ Magazine

Following a firestorm over his anti-gay comments, Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson is explaining himself—though he isn’t backing down. Robertson allowed the Daily Mail access to a Bible study group in his church. “I love all men and women. I am a lover of humanity, not a hater,” he said in a speech.

As for his GQ comments, “I am just reading what was written over 2,000 years ago. Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom. All I did was quote from the scriptures, but they just didn’t know it. Whether I said it, or they read it, what’s the difference?”

Robertson led the group in prayer, noting that “I will not give or back off from my path because you conquered death, Father, so we are not worried about all the repercussions,” the Hollywood Reporter notes.

Meanwhile, TMZ is reporting that the religious Hunt Channel and outdoor-focused Pursuit Channel are expressing interest in the Robertsons should A+E drop the hit TV show.

Uganda’s Parliament passes anti-gay legislation

Originally known as the ‘Kill The Gays’ bill, Uganda’s anti-gay legislation has passed in parliament.

The original bill included a death penalty for being gay, but that has been removed from the legislation’s language.  However,  people can still get life in prison for homosexuality.

In addition, the bill will make it illegal to ‘promote’ homosexuality and will also jail anyone who does not report homosexual activities to the police.

The president could sign the bill as soon as tomorrow.

The government is aware there will be an international outcry, which may lead to some countries suspending aid to the country.

Video surfaces of more anti-gay animus by Duck Dynasty personality Phil Robertson

TMZ has posted a 3-year-old video shows “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson demonizing LGBT people as “insolent” and “evil.” Robertson apparently delivered the anti-gay sermon at Berean Bible Church in Pennsylvania.

“First they say, ‘There is no God. Get him out of your mind,’” Robertson said, waving a Bible. “Then they bow down to birds, animals and reptiles, and each other, and the first thing you see coming out of that book is gross sexual immorality.”

“Women with women, men with men, they committed indecent acts with one another, and they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions,” Robertson said. “They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, God-haters. They are heartless, they are faithless, they are senseless, they are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil. That’s what you have 235 years, roughly, after your forefathers founded the country.

Robertson was “suspended” by A+E Network as a result of anti-gay comments made in a GQ Magazine interview earlier this week.

In related news, the Robertson family has now issued a statement saying they won’t do the show without their homophobic patriarch:

“As a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of ‘Duck Dynasty.'”
