Election Night 2024: There Was Some Good News

I could sit in my numbness regarding what happened last night, But, instead, I want to take a minute to focus on good news that came out of the 2024 elections including some history-making wins for LGBTQ candidates. I really don’t want these important victories to pass without acknowledging them. Feel your pain. Grieving is important. And the anger I’m feeling is part of that. Then remember – there are challenges ahead. We have work to do. • Sarah McBride overwhelmingly won her race for Delaware’s lone seat in the House of Representatives which means she will become the first out transgender member of Congress.

• Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) – the first out lesbian elected to the U.S. Senate and the only queer senator currently serving – fought off a stiff challenge from Republican opponent Eric Hovde to win a third term. •  State Sen. Emily Randall won her race for Washington’s 6th Congressional District making her the first ever queer Latina member of Congress. • Texas state Rep. Julie Johnson (D) won the race to fill the Texas House District 32 seat left open by Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas).  She will be the first openly LGBTQ person to represent Texas and the South in Congress.

• And all nine of the LGBTQ members of the current House won their reelection bids. • State Rep. Keturah Herron Keturah became the first out LGBTQ woman and first queer person of color ever elected to the Kentucky state Senate. • Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr — the first openly trans lawmaker in the state — has won her bid for reelection to the Montana House of Representatives. • Colorado and California approved ballot measures that will remove anti-marriage equality language from the states’ respective constitutions.

• LGBTQ people shifted even more into the Democratic camp this year, with Harris pulling in 86% of the queer vote compared to Trump’s 12%. That’s a 15-point change from 2020. • Colorado, Missouri, Maryland, Nevada, Montana, New York, and Arizona all passed abortion rights referendums guaranteeing women’s rights to make their own choices about their bodies. • Democrat Josh Stein has been elected as the next governor of North Carolina defeating self-professed “Black Nazi” and anti-LGBTQ Republican Mark Robinson.
