Several snap polls following last night’s vice presidential debate show voters saw the one-on-one verbal jousting ending in a tie.

From The Daily Beast:
A flash poll by CBS News and YouGov, released shortly after the debate aired, saw 42 percent of likely voters giving a win to Vance and 41 percent to Walz, while 17 percent judged it a tie.
A CNN poll of registered voters who watched the debate, conducted by SSRS produced a similar result: 51 percent said they thought Vance performed better and 49 percent gave the nod to Walz.
Likely voters were also split 50/50 in a Politico/Focaldata snap poll. However, the Politico poll showed Walz with a sixteen point lead among independent voters: 58 percent said the Minnesota governor won the debate versus 42 percent who sided with Vance.
And that’s about how I would score it as well. Vance was in his slick, polished Yale graduate mode which made him seem much more reasonable than his usual smart-ass campaign mode. Although, he made a point to keep referring to issues and policies of the past 3.5 years as the “Harris administration” over and over, as if Harris were president instead of vice president, and everything today is a result of only HER leadership. As everyone knows, vice president’s don’t have the power or authority of a president. Walz came across a little bit frantic in the beginning taking notes on Vance’s answers, looking up at Vance and then looking down to write. But he hit his stride about 10 minutes in and was much more specific on policy talk than Vance. At the end of the day, I don’t think this debate will move any numbers in the election, but it was good for voters to get to see them for an extended chat. Two moments that everyone noted were: • After Vance claimed that “millions of illegal immigrants” had overwhelmed cities like Springfield, moderator Margaret Brennan pointed out that the issue involved legal Haitian immigrants. Vance became upset, arguing that the fact-check violated the debate’s ground rules.
WOW — Vance gets mad when his lies about his own constituents are fact-checked. His mic ends up getting cut. pic.twitter.com/PxZ4nmphNW

• Walz scored a big point near the end of the debate when he asked Vance if Trump lost the 2020 election. Vance wouldn’t give him an answer.
WALZ: Did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election?
VANCE: Tim, I’m focused on the future WALZ: That’s a damning non-answer pic.twitter.com/D6tVg8HOFC — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 2, 2024
