More disturbing news from the ongoing situation in Minneapolis as Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley (above) told the press today that ICE agents have detained off-duty police officers demanding “proof of citizenship.”
The alleged civil rights violations include multiple police officers – all of whom are persons of color – and off duty when the encounters took place.
Via News Nation:
Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley told reporters that one off-duty officer from his department had ICE officers draw their guns after she took out her phone to record an interaction.
Bruley added that he has received “endless” complaints from Brooklyn Park residents alleging that ICE officers have violated their civil rights since U.S. Border Patrol agents arrived in the area two weeks ago.
In one case, one officer said she was boxed in by ICE officers who demanded her citizenship paperwork. Bruley said the officer is a U.S. citizen and “clearly would not have the paperwork.”
When the officer took out her phone to record the interaction, she reported that her phone was knocked out of her hand and guns were drawn.
When she informed ICE officers that she was a police officer, ICE officers left the area without an apology or further comment.
“This isn’t just important because it happened to off-duty police officers,” Bruley said Tuesday. “If it is happening to our officers, it pains me to think of how many of our community members are falling victim to this kind of treatment every day.”
These allegations come as clashes between protesters and ICE agents assigned to Minneapolis continue in the nearly two weeks since Renee Good was shot dead by an ICE agent.
