Philz Coffee Restores Pride Flags To Cafes Following Backlash

California-based Philz Coffee has reversed a controversial plan to remove Pride flags from its cafés, issuing a public apology after days of backlash from customers, employees, and LGBTQ+ advocates.

In his public statement, CEO Mahesh Sadarangani reaffirmed his company’s LGBTQ+ allyship after following extensive dialogue with employees and San Francisco Pride.

The company abandoned a controversial policy after protests and mounting public pressure.

“Every Pride flag that is up stays up, and any Pride flag that was previously removed can be put back up,” the company said in his statement Friday.

“I made a mistake, and I am sincerely sorry. To our Team Members, to our customers, and to the LGBTQIA+ community that has been with us since the very beginning, the confusion and hurt we caused around our new policy for Pride flags failed you.” said Sadarangani.

“The Pride flag is a symbol of safety and belonging for people who don’t always find that in the world, and that is not something I want to take away from anyone who walks into a Philz.”

“I had the chance to sit down with San Francisco Pride leaders Suzanne Ford and Jupiter Peraza, both are trans women who led this conversation with grace, directness and a genuine commitment to finding alignment on what matters,” he added.

“Going forward, each of the company’s 82 stores, representing 82 unique communities, will also feature locally created artwork shaped by the voices of Team Members and the neighborhoods they serve, a living expression of the diverse communities Philz is proud to be part of.”

In its original announcement, Philz Coffee said it had decided to remove Pride flags for “brand consistency.” But the real reason was to bow down to the ongoing anti-LGBTQ+ pressure campaigns that have been sweeping across the country trying to appease Team Trump and its obsession with targeting queer people.

But this time, the employees themselves refused to stay quiet. A coalition of Philz Coffee baristas launched a petition, making it clear that the decision wasn’t just a branding call. It was a rejection of the people inside those cafes, on both sides of the counter.

The Human Rights Campaign activated its network. And within days, a company that thought it could slip this through without consequence was staring down a genuine crisis.

So, celebrate the win. Celebrate the baristas who spoke up. Celebrate the 14,000+ people who signed on and made their voices impossible to ignore. Celebrate the fact that the flag is going back up.
