Some news items for you as we head into the holiday weekend:
• Gayety: Pedro Pascal is reportedly in negotiations to step into the lead role in Todd Haynes’ highly anticipated gay romance, De Noche, filling the void left by Joaquin Phoenix’s abrupt departure in August 2024 just days before filming was slated to begin.
• The Advocate: I highly recommend this interview with Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who resigned from the CDC this week over Health Sec. Kennedy’s and Trump’s dismantling of vaccine policy. He points out the many ways that politicizing science is impacting the public. Great read.
“The CDC you knew is over,” the infectious diseases doctor told The Advocate. “Unless someone takes radical action, there is nothing there that can be salvaged.” https://t.co/m5l4BcWZRM

• AP News: The Department of Health and Human Services has told 40 states to eliminate parts of sex ed lessons that include LGBTQ topics. If they don’t comply in 60 days, they’ll lose federal money. Because high school kids can’t even learn LGBTQ people exist…?
• LGBTQ Nation: South Carolina has asked the Supreme Court to reject one transgender student’s ability to use the boys’ bathroom while a challenge to the state’s anti-trans bathroom law makes its way through the courts.
The state is asking the nation’s highest court to intervene so it can quickly stop a trans kid from doing his business at school.

• New York Times: A federal appeals court on Friday found that many of Donald Trump’s tariffs were issued illegally, upholding an earlier decision from a federal trade court.
Breaking News: A federal appeals court ruled that many of President Trump’s most punishing tariffs are illegal. But the judges delayed the implementation of their order until October to grant the administration time to seek review by the Supreme Court. https://t.co/lGBkl0I8Cy
